Parodies in DBZ?

Post by Azure » Mon Mar 13, 2006 5:11 am

After reading and watching the early parts of Dr Slump, and seeing a lot of the pop culture references that influenced Toriyama I've started to go back to DBZ and look for similar jokes popping up again.
For instance a lot of you will now be familar with Suppaman in Dr Slump, I'm pretty sure the start of the Saiyan saga is a direct parody of superman ( last son of a dead planet, it's a farmer who sees Goku's capsule first). There's also the secound parody of the Bruce Lee film "Game of Death" where Vegeta and Goku go down instead of up ( Buu Saga).
Any really obvious ones I'm missing?

Well. Form 3 Freeza's head looks nearly exactly like the head of the aliens in, well, Aliens. XD

A lot of people have made the rather obvious comparison between Terminator and the Android Saga. What with Time Travel and killer Androids.

<Xyex> Original Freeza never sounded like a chick to me.
<Kaboom> Neither does Rita
<Xyex> Good point.

That's because people are stupid and illiterate (gods save me from irony if I spell that wrong). Time traveling killer robots/androids/etc is a sci-fi staple.

The Ginyu Force and their many poses could be a knock at Super Sentai, which has been a staple of Japanese TV for a while. The same can be said of the Great Saiyaman, though I thought I read that his poses were a parody of Sailor Moon.

The Ginyu Force was indeed a parody on sentai teams and yes Great Saiyaman was a spoof on Sailor Moon's intro.

Funny...I always thought of Great Saiyaman just being a normal tokusatsu hero with funny poses.

Is that so... I really wish I could have seen the Saiya-man/Sailor Moon parody first...

I believe in the first series around the time of the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai Kamesennin goes under cover as "Jackie Chun", and obvious Jackie Chan parody :)

EDIT: Now I understand why the Saiya-man thing isn't clicking for me! Sailor Moon's debut was in 1992 and Dragonballs was in 1984. That being said, it depends on when the first comic with Gohan's Saiya-Man poses were shown for this to count. Anyone?

It's funny you mention that. I was watching movie 13 the other day and chuckled to myself when Great Saiyaman #1 and #2 introduced themselves. It reminded me a lot of the original Kamen Rider series, especially the antennae on Videl's helmet.

more of a reference of himself, but Son Gohan's (Goku's grandfather) Mask was also worn by one of Arale's classmates in Dr. Slump.

Oh it's a play on those types of shows too, but the silly poses and stuff he does are a parody of Sailor Moon's speeches and poses whenever she appeared.

I'm pretty sure the Great Saiyaman chapters came out in like 1994 or so. I know it was after 92 cuz the Freeza saga came out in 92.
On hiatus.

This isn't really a parody, but I found it quite funny, in the dub version when Goku is making this whole speech to Frieza about he is the " light in the darkness " or something like that, it reminded me so much of Sailormoon. So yeah, not intentionally a parody of any sort, but to me it came off as a similar speech that Sailormoon recited.

The Freeza Saga came out in 1989/1990.
