Pure-hearted Saiyans are pretty much the rarest things in the universe.

Maybe the "Super Saiyan God" has to be, well, a Super Saiyan in the first place, and those are pretty rare too.

They had six for the first power up... And everyone save Pan is a SSJ.

Which makes me wonder how did the original Super Saiyan God manage to gather 5 pure-hearted Saiyans back then. I sure hope it wasn't Bardock, in any case

Resembling Kaioken too much is my fault. It definitely looks different with a CG aura.

I hope that's true, so far I'm underwhelmed by the fact that it seems like it's just Kaioken or that feaux SSJ thing from Movie 4. Not to say I'm not still excited to see the movie or anything. hehe.

He means why con't any of the other Saiyans we know (Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, Trunks, Pan) transform too? Since it requires six pure Saiyans, they could all get the power-up in theory.

Because he's pure of heart. As stated by Goku when Vegeta gets brought back to life at the end of the Majin Boo Saga (along with everybody good-hearted): something like "wow, look, it seems you're definately one of the good guys now!"

Cue next spin-off where Super Saiyan Bardock travels back through time to attempt to save the Saiyan race before Freeza destroys them and becomes the original Super Saiyan God but cannot get enough pure-hearted Saiyans to help him and oh god this is far too likely to get made please stop me from writing any more.

Actually, the thought crossed my mind. We know who was the Super Saiyan before there was Goku, we know who was the Saiyan that did good things protecting other people, etc...
I think it is an open door to Bardack having gathered a group of Saiyans, having taught them to respect life since he has seen what heartless tyrants can cause, and having trying to turn his people good a thousand years before they would get the idea of being associated with monsters and going in rampages for tyrants like Freezer - which would have them all killed.
But that would imply that Saiyans already existed a thousand years ago. Anyway, who knows what adventure Bardack lived when turning good and trying to prevent what would happen a thousand years later by changing his people's motives and fate.

I don't think the staff actually went that far, but maybe they did think about "we'll just say it happened before with a good-hearted Saiyan who managed to be surrounded by other pure-hearted Saiyans, and maybe people will think that there's only one Saiyan that could possibly live such a thing and come up with hypothesis about what happened in his life and what adventures he might have lived after the special'".

Maybe somehow this works only once with the same group of Saiyans, otherwise the rule would not be "six pure Saiyans can make a Super Saiyan God", it would be "six pure Saiyans can make six Super Saiyan Gods".

So, at what point did the SSjGod appeared then? Before they left Planet Saiya? During their stay on Planet Plant? During the war with the Tsufuru? or during the year leading up to their encounter with Freeza?

I really doubt it would be during Bardock's and King Vegeta's generation. If any I would say during the first few years when they arrived to the planet, right?
