Guldo's Time Freeze

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Guldo's Time Freeze

Post by Sin » Wed Mar 13, 2013 9:39 pm

As a kid one of the powers I thought was underrated and wish was explored more was Guldo's Time Freeze ability. There aren't really any limits shown to it other than that it stops when Guldo stops holding his breathe, surely then this would be one of the most useful moves in the series don't you think?

What are people views on this technique, do you guys think it has other limits such as an area limit? And does it really 'freeze time' or is it something else entirely?

It's never explored because it's broken.

I think it works like the Spirit and Time Room. Guldo appears temporary in a different dimension where time is non-existent or moves extremely slower. Or maybe that happens to him as well as everything around him to an extend, but not the entire planet or universe.

And I agree that it's underrated; it's a pretty awesome ability, and it makes Guldo the most interesting of the Ginyus, to me.

I think it would become useless once you start getting super saiyans and characters that can move faster than he can inhale.

Also, in the manga, his power was never explicitly shown to be tied to his breath. He just couldn't maintain it for long periods of time.

But I agree. I always wanted to see more of that, but, while Toriyama could come up with people with interesting powers, he never seemed to have any good ideas for how to use them. I'm looking at you, Chaozu. Of course, the same thing could be said for Toei. They have the presence of mind to pair up the two strongest telekinetic characters for battle, and all they can think of to do is have them headbutt each other. What? I... just... don't even... arrrrgh! That's like bringing Julia Child onto your cooking show so she can fix your fucking car!

It seemed to me more like telekinetic stasis than actual time stopping.

This went the way of the Devilmite Beam: it was taken out because it could end fights instantly.

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

 That really got me. I guess Toei matched them up for being the same height and didn't even consider their similar powers.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!
