Well, the digital version that Shueisha is selling via various online retailers mirrors the original placement of the title pages on the tankobons (it mirrors the tankobons on pretty much everything except the cover art and the chapter distribution, since it's divided by arc).B wrote:DinoChow's review up there says the books don't have title pages either, so I guess it's Shueisha and not Viz holding out?

So I continue to show my support for this product here in the US by purchasing WSJ one-by-one in hopes that the colored chapters will be released in digital tankobon format before I lose money by having not bought a year subscription in the first place. Long story short, I'm loving the color way more than I thought I would. However, just like with the recolored Kame house, you'll catch little things (things you think have a clear-cut color scheme!) that will leave you questioning "Why, god, why?"
Case-in-point, this week's chapter was everything after Piccolo lost his arm up to him firing his secret technique- the Makankosappo! But what struck me as odd wasn't the Makankosappo, but Goku's oddly-colored Kamehameha. As you can see, they chose a yellow border, not unlike Raditz's generic ki blast used one chapter prior. As far as I can recall, the only full-color kanzenban chapter featuring a Kamehameha was SSj Goku vs 100% Freeza, and I know that Kamehameha went uncolored/was the same color as FPSSj Gohan's aura (that is to say, "white"). I don't have Daizenshuu #1 with me to double check things, but what is the "official" manga color of the Kamehameha? Where did the blue that we're all fond of first make its appearance? The anime?
Their decision to use a generic yellow color for such a well known attack has left me a little irked.

It is white (with black boards) when Goku uses it against Frieza's Nova Strike (year 1991 in Daizenshuu 1).
The April 4 VJump illustration of the Father-Son Kamehameha in the pages for year 1993 is whte as well, but with dark blue boards.

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
Leaving it white would have seem lazy on their part for a "full-color edition", they probably thought they wanted those supposedly-impressive attacks to indeed look impressive with striking colors.Tyro wrote: Their decision to use a generic yellow color for such a well known attack has left me a little irked.
So they thought about their own idea of what the color of energy should be like, not taking the anime into consideration.
And they chose that energy being golden is a good concept (possibly a simplified version of the digital Pilaf Arc one where they had chosen that it was fire-like, for the rest of the manga they've just removed the red-border recolors so that fiery blasts turn to golden blasts).
A clever choice, since this is the best version of Kame Hame Ha and most other attacks that we ever had, that golden just makes you jaw drop when it reaches your eye.
I was already a fan of the fiery version anyway, but golden is even better (especially during the beautiful golden clash between the Kame Hame Ha and the Garlic Cannon)!
However, there are some exceptions to it for attacks that have a very special way to use the energy, such as the Makanko Sappo or the Genki Dama.

Unfortunately, all that I can show you is from the freely-given trailer on the Mangapolo Youtube channel.Duo wrote:Do you have an image of the "big frame" from that scene? While the first two pictures are pretty accurate depictions of what the actual page looks like (but with still a more "shiny golden" effect), the third one likely has "extra super-shining-golden-glowing". This is all due to this specific trailer being animated with special effects.

Since it's a photograph, the colors are less vivid, but you can still see what it looks like for real, pretty much what's above but without additionnal special effects.

That Boo arc preview definitely looks official, or it's extremely well made to look official.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Also I'm pretty sure the source of that Majin Boo in Full Color is from Shueisha's GENKIDAMA channel. Can't believe I forgot about that. That is probably why he refuses to tell anyone the source.
Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
The Boo stuff does seem official, and if it's not, then it's a pretty damn good copy of it!
Makaioshin's hypothesis could be a good call, since it would explain why we would see colored pictures of that era when they're not even at Cell yet: they would have recolored this specific moment, not necessarily the rest.
I mean, I don't think they have it all colored up until the end of the show, otherwise they wouldn't have talked about a release date "sometime later" for Cell and Boo. If they had already done it all, they would have released it all or at least given specific dates/previews.
So I really think it's just that moment they've done, for reasons like the one mentionned by Makaioshin (especially given the message at the end).
If it is official, then:
- C-17 has another coat color (dark turquoise).
- Krilin has his stylish Kanzenban colors (black T-shirt).
- Goten has his black underclothes (which is no surprise since Toriyama has never colored him otherwise, and in such cases they use his colors).
- Videl has white underclothes (on the contrary of the anime's orange).
- Yamcha wears the same colors as Krilin, including the black top.

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
That does look rather spectacular, I will admit. However, turning the color of the Kamehameha to golden just seems like a decision made for the sake of going against the established lore of the series. It's been blue for 25 years. It reminds me of how Viz turned Majin to Djinn. Different for the sake of different.Cold Skin wrote:[A great big post with pictures and information.]

Pretty sure that video was made asking the world for support when the tsunami hit Japan not too long ago. The coloring definitely is not up to a standard where you'd get someone to pay for it.DarkPrince_92 wrote:Buu saga in color!

It looks like what you would expect from the actual Full Colored Comics.(I'd be surprised if it ends up any different than this)Son_Gohan wrote:

Or maybe that was your point...
I think VegettoEX and Hujio talked about this on the podcast. It is possible that they have been finished with all of it but are just holding off on the Cell arc and Boo arc because they wanted to see how well the physical copies sold.Cold Skin wrote:

Or because it's good to re-think about something as if no one had stepped in to take those decisions before.Duo wrote:That does look rather spectacular, I will admit. If they ever do a full remake of the anime, I sure hope they won't stick to their 25-years-old choices and rather take this chance to re-think things from scratch, as if they were adapting the manga for the first time nowadays.
Just because someone decided back then that a Kame Hame Ha had to be blue, doesn't mean that you're a prisonner to that decision when coming up with a new version: you can say "they took that decision back then, good for them, but it doesn't have to be like that, it can pretty much be like this new color we thought was a better concept".
When I first saw the fireball version on the digital Pilaf arc, I was surprised and excited, it felt like: "well... yeah, why not? It is supposed to be a bit like a fireball in the end, why not coloring it exactly like some fire blast?! Why should it be the way we've seen it for years?"
And I was equally excited when seeing those gold blasts: "oh yeah, that's an interesting interpretation/concept, the energy within us would be symbolized as being golden, regardless of who fires it and with what technic, except for very special use of Ki! Why not?! It's an interesting concept!"
I love new interpretations, it gives this feeling of rediscovering something under a new light, opening up your initial vision of something like "oh, right, I never thought of it that way, but that's a valid interpretation that changes the feel of it in a very interesting way! It kind of alters my definition of that thing to encompass other 'feels' for it!" It's a big part of what makes this edition interesting and fresh, it would be a bit less interesting if it was just the colors of the anime all the time!
I'm a big fan of "re-thinking the concept", of "reinventing something", like the new Tomb Raider game, the last Spider-Man movie, or this edition re-imagining how some elements should appear.
The whole "This has been done in this way before, but I have thought of another way to build things on the core concept for that element and maybe - who knows - make the concept stand out in a more glorious or spot-on way!" is exciting!
Can't wait to see the Super Saiyans, since I'm pretty sure even if they stick with the golden aura of the anime that I never liked too much, it will render much better without the transparency and with the flame-like aura and be as gorgeous as those blasts!

Man, I STILL hate the font they're using for this release. It just looks so scanlation-y.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
Yeah, I'd understand if it was like a reboot of the series trying to be as different as possible due to varying reasons. But this isn't a reboot, it's yet another re-release of the comic. One that is running on nostalgia and I'd argue recognition of the TV series, since one the complaints I've heard (at least in Western fandom) is that the comic is in black and white. If they're appealing to that audience, i.e. people already familiar with the series, then why are they changing it?Cold Skin wrote:HOT SNIPPING ACTION
But, the biggest problem with it is that it's a really boring color scheme. They aren't limited to black and white anymore, so why does everyone have the same color for their attacks? It doesn't have to blue or purple, but it also doesn't have to be yellow for every single person.
If you're not here soon... GET ON!
