Anyone else bothered by this? (TFS related)
Re: Anyone else bothered by this? (TFS related)
My only real issue is when people insist that TFS cast members are leaps and bounds better than their Funimation/Ocean counterparts and also insist they should be the official voices instead.
Like I've said in the past, TFS cast members are great for their more comedic portrayal of the characters. Would they work in a more official way? No, I don't believe so (Again, no offense Kaiser and co).

Definitely the opposite for me. I didn't think it was THAAAT funny starting out, but got progressively better.Attitudefan wrote:TFS used to be L.O.L. Today, it is meh.
Anyway, I think TFS does it's best to satisfy the needs of all viewers, fans and non-fans of Dragon Ball alike. Of course a lot of the non-fans will be confused about certain things due to not seeing the series at all, hence there's a percentage of viewers who do look for the actual story out of curiosity. I used to watch old TFS episodes with friends and find them asking questions like "did that happen" or "why did he do that again?", then end up rewatching some DBZ for clarification.
The more exposure for Dragon Ball the better I'd say.

You don't get an accurate portrayal of the series in the Funimation dub either. While TFS is a parody it still presents the story better than the Funimation dub. This tells you how bad the Funimation dub is since it was supposed to be serious.Super Gazellian wrote:Sorry, but what do you mean by this? I honestly don't see a problem here.

Re: Anyone else bothered by this? (TFS related)
Doesn't bug me at all. Dragonball's been around since the 80's. I can't imagine many people who haven't been exposed to it by now.. if one or two stragglers have never seen it until watching Abridged, just isn't that significant to me. DBZ's run on Cartoon Network already secured it a strong foothold in the American culture. So many of my peers and coworkers grew up watching it and have fond memories of the show.. it's crazy but people from all walks of life that I meet in the Air Force and I can strike up a casual conversation about DBZ with almost every one of them.

Maybe my memory is tarnished by the fact it's been since the first airings of these episodes that I've seen the dub, but I seem to recall that the general plot was at least intact. There were a few scenes in season 3 twisted beyond repair, but it still doesn't seem right to me to say that Abridged keeps the story more coherent.TheMightyOzaru wrote: Oh no it's not excessive slamming at all. You'd think that the Funimation dub isn't that distorted but it is. I can actually see the story while watching the abridged series.Duo wrote:Maybe my memory is tarnished by the fact it's been since the first airings of these episodes that I've seen the dub, but I seem to recall that the general plot was at least intact. Funimation dub does have its issues, but isn't going a bit far to say you can't follow the story? That's a bit over the top, almost bias sounding to me.

I'm not saying it never follows the story. I'm just saying TFS just does a better job following it. I'm certainly not bias, I'll still watch the Funimation dub because I still get my kicks out of it.DarkPrince_92 wrote:Funimation dub does have its issues, but isn't going a bit far to say you can't follow the story? Re: Anyone else bothered by this? (TFS related)
I have no problem with this whatsoever. Quite frankly, I think TFS has served as some free advertising for DBZ, because I recall hearing and seeing comments that people went out and bought some of FUNimation's DBZ box sets so that they could be up to date and understand the jokes.
As far as people "ranking" the TFS actors alongside the actual voice actors...sure, why not? Granted, TFS is doing a story with a vastly different tone, but I don't think people can help it if they create more memorable takes on the characters. A perfect example would be Nappa. Let's be honest.............in DBZ, Nappa was a disposable character, whose only grand purpose in the story was to serve as a comparison point for demonstrating how strong Vegeta was. TFS and Takahata101 created what I believe is the Nappa that most people think of when they hear the name, "Nappa." Sure, TFS Nappa had the most memorable script, but still...that's the Nappa that's most memorable.
I also don't think it's a problem because, quite frankly, I'm amazed at how far TFS has come as actors. They were hilarious from the beginning, but it seems that overtime they turned from "hilarious kids talking into USB mics," into hilarious actors that created completely believable characters within the TFS universe. I occasionally get questions from aspiring voice actors on how to get into voice acting, and one of the more common opinions of mine that I share is that, to develop their acting skills, they do their own fan projects, because acting that consistently absolutely can improve your acting skills overtime, and I often cite "DBZ Abridged" and "Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged," as proof.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: Anyone else bothered by this? (TFS related)
I don't mind people being introduced to the series by DBZ Abridged because they can at least get interested in DB and that might make them to watch/read the actual series and be well-informed fans. However, I never liked people quoting DBZA's lines everywhere and arguing Masako X is the best English Goku in a serious English dub discussion. Mixing up official and fanmade stuff when you're seriously talking about DB awfully bothers me.

Re: Anyone else bothered by this? (TFS related)
I don't see why people comparing the TFS actors to the menagerie of other "official" English ones would bother anybody. It's not like they're inherently any less in line with Toriyama's original vision for the character's (or Toei's original vision, if you're going to be a stickler and point out characters that they created without his involvement) just because Funimation didn't hire them. The fact that it's a more comedic interpretation of the series doesn't matter; if someone thinks MasakoX is a better fit for Goku than Ian Corlett, Peter Kelamis, Kirby Morrow, Jeffrey Watson, Jeremiah Yurk, and Sean Schemmel, then they could have perfectly valid reasons for it.
As for the larger topic at hand, I find it kind of strange that people find it as funny as they do without having seen the series proper, but they do, so whatever.

See I still don't get how you can say this, am I supposed to believe Goku's ship had a muffin button? That Nappa comes back as a ghost singing a catchy parody of Ghost Busters and haunts Vegeta just to annoy him?TheMightyOzaru wrote:I'm not saying it never follows the story. I don't have a problem with people not liking the Funimation dub, personal preference whatever, but as Duo said this just seems like excessive bashing, and I guess as a "Funi fanboy" I'm maybe taking unnecessary offence to it
Sorry if I'm being pushy but I'm just having a hard time understanding how you can feel this way
Re: Anyone else bothered by this? (TFS related)
Even if it were true that the FUNImation dub tells a different plot (it doesn't, but there are definitely a lot of weird detail alterations up until around the Buu arc), I don't see any benefit to making statements that goad fans of that version into argument with those whom prefer the original Japanese, such as myself.Super Gazellian wrote:Quite a few words and an emoticon or two.
Though, at this point, I do struggle to see why an English-only viewer would prefer the old DBZ dub to the Kai dub.

Speaking of voices, I'm another one who gets bothered by people saying MasakoX is best English Goku. I will say though Lanipator's Vegeta is the voice that I hear when I think of Vegeta. So nice one, Lanipator

Why do statements in favor of MasakoX bother you if you're willing to say that Lanipator is the best Vegeta?

MasakoX isn't my favorite English Goku, or even favorite fandub Goku, too me his performance isn't as good as Sean Schemmel the only thing he has is a higher pitch voice, he also lacks a bit in the screaming/yelling department.
Re: Anyone else bothered by this? (TFS related)
Voice wise I find MasakoX the closest to Nozawa in English, not sure about his screams or anything else but yeah...
On topic, I am a little picky with it but hey it's up to the person.

It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.
