The Garlic Jr. arc is really boring story-wise, but I like its animation and music. It has many rare pieces that you never hear in the other arcs and they're used very effectively.

Well the real problem with the Garlic Junior arc is that any of the fighters could defeat him with a sneeze at that point. Seriously, it should have taken Gohan less than a minute to tear Garlic Junior's limbs off, leaving him a stump who couldn't die.

They might as well have a Pilaf comeback for all the threat Garlic Junior poses, Makyo Star or not.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Besides, it was either that or some wacky "Goku's adventures on crazy different planets filler" I guess.
That would have been amazing, seeing Goku voyage through space! It might have been like GT but better.

I've actually never seen this arc, or at least more than a minute of it. I remember seeing a few seconds of Kuririn fighting but that was back 13 years ago.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

I'm one of the few people who actually likes the Garlic Jr arc. Yeah, it's one enormous plothole, and that isn't good, but once you look past that I find the story is more complex than most others in Dragon Ball, saving the world in this one actually has some clever(ish) solution that isn't just getting stronger and beating the villain in a fight, and the victory was a true team effort, too.

I also like the story of Kuririn and Maron's brief relationship, and it's one of the parts of the series where I think the dub used some good background music.

If nothing else, I love the Garlic Jr. arc for giving us exactly this - or at least the final episode of it. I don't hate the arc, but I am kind of lukewarm on it - it's the arc that almost made me lose interest in the series years ago when I first saw it, so that says something right there - but I still say that the Kuririn proposal episode is one of the single best episodes in the entirety of the anime. Not just out of DBZ, but out of DB, GT, Kai, all of it. It has a really heartfelt feeling that we don't get anywhere else in the series.

I have to agree with that. Oddly, I remember that episode being even more touching in the FUNimation dub than the original, but I haven't seen it in a long time.

For whatever crap people give it (some of it is unjustified in my opinion) what I like from it is Goku isn't the hero. I want Goku to remain the star of the show, but every once and a while it's nice to give other characters the spotlight. It's a shame Tenshinhan, Yamcha, and Chaozu weren't included. This arc does contain one of my favorite moments, Kami telling off the previous Kamis, and saying he may not have been born an Earthling, but he loves it more than them.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

I am guessing that this one is the extension of that .

Having no Goku or Vegeta around was a nice touch, but that's about it. I really did not like Maron since I always found her annoying.
