Goku's Eternal Future

Post by ABEAR » Fri Mar 22, 2013 9:16 pm

In Dragon Ball Z, Goku can teleport to the universe of the gods and could visit heaven anytime if he really wanted. So what does dieing mean to Goku now? Couldn't he teleport back to the world of the living even if he were dead and really wanted to? Doesn't he fight better while dead? Does death have no meaning to Goku and his friends anymore? What would dead Goku's feelings be about the earth? Would he still keep getting involved in earth crises? Why doesn't Goku wish himself and his friends immortal? Death is worse because if he dies again he'll disappear. So isn't death worse than life in Dragon Ball? Aren't these all interesting questions to ponder? :D I want to know the answers. What do you think?

I imagine that he can go to other world, but if he's dead he can't come here except via permission from King Yama.

I think it's pretty apparent that Goku can't travel back and forth between realms while he is dead, otherwise, after his time ran out during the Buu Arc, he would have just teleported back to teach Goten and Trunks fusion instead of leaving Piccolo to do it. I do think it is shown that he still cares about the Earth; he spiritually helps out Gohan at least once (3 times if you count the movies), when he's facing foes that would destroy him and the planet. As for immortality, I feel that Goku would consider that to be "cheating," and would much rather train to overcome any ordeals he may face.
As to your question about death being worse than life, you have to consider that the vast majority of people don't get to keep their body after dying. Anime filler aside, 99.9% of people just get reincarnated after being purified in the afterlife; only heroes like Goku get special treatment. I'm not sure if his friends would get the same reward or not...

So he'll never see his friends again?

I'm not sure. In the anime, after they are all killed by Buu, we see Krillin and Yamcha training on the Grand Kai's planet, and we see Chi-chi, Bulma, and Videl in Heaven, but this doesn't happen in the manga. Also, when Pure Buu blows up the Earth, killing Gohan, Piccolo, Trunks, Goten, Tien, and Chiaotzu, we never see them again until they are brought back to life.
Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, and Piccolo did keep their bodies after being killed in the saiyan arc, but I seem to remember that being because they were given special permission to keep their bodies, although I could be wrong. If I am wrong, that could indicate that Goku would at least be seeing some of them again :D

When he decides to stay dead at the end of the Cell arc, he says he'll see everyone again when they die.

Goku probably wouldn't want immortality. For him, death was just another adventure.
