Dragon Ball vs. Dragon Ball Z vs. Dragon Ball GT!

Which is your favourite?

My personal favourite was Dragon Ball. You got to grow up with Son, watch him learn from his mistakes, watch him make friends, make enemys. Exciting stuff. Bulma, Tenshinhan, Oolong, Chiaotzu, Krillin, and Yamcha all meant something in Dragon Ball. Incredibly useful. In Z and GT, they are basically dog doo.

I'm going to cheat a little, and say from the end of Dragonball through early Dragonball Z, ending after the Freeza Arc. I prefer the more serious direction taken to the earlier, more comedic stuff, and like you said, most of the characters are still relevant. My two favorites, Piccolo and Krillin, especially shine during this part.

Z, there was no Vegeta in Dragon Ball.
I like the action in Z a lot more too, but the adventure in Dragon Ball is great.

Joking aside, I'm kind of conflicted. DBZ is the era that I know the best and can remember the most minute details about it, since I've seen that material a million times over since the days when it was first on Toonami. If I had to pick the story that was the franchise at it's best and most stable though? That would have to be Dragon Ball.

I love the post-Demon King Piccolo stuff, but the Buu arc is a "what could have been" testament to the series if it hadn't shifted so heavily towards action later down the line.

In my personal opinion, as probably expected, It goes DBZ>DB>DBGT.

Dragon Ball because it makes the best use of its main characters, then DBZ, and then GT. Also, the powers aren't insane like they get in DBZ.

Probably Dragon Ball Z, because I love how huge the world becomes. Earth already had so many interesting places, but then we get this big universe full of crazy stuff, an expansive afterlife, a big hierarchy of gods, etc. I just love Toriyama's cosmos ball.

Still, the Daimao arc is probably my favorite part of the story, so it's tempting for me to put Dragon Ball above all that...

Of course the manga is the go-to winner.

As someone who ever so slightly prefers animation to manga: I'd probably have to say I'd like the Dragon Ball Z portion the best; mainly because I like the characters much more in Z, there's more universe-building, and I also feel Toriyama was at his peak in terms of character design and fight choreography during the "Z" era. I'm overall more entertained by DBZ; I can sit and watch a few episodes or a movie and it's heaven to me.

The only reason I don't rank Dragon Ball higher than DBZ is because the Red Ribbon Arc drags horribly and uninterestingly in the both the anime and manga versions. The only saving graces in that arc are Taopaipai and Murasaki, which are highlights in what I would call the weakest story in the whole manga. Other than that, Dragon Ball is much more consistant in terms of quality than DBZ. I will say that the King Piccolo and 23rd Budokai arcs were excellent, and led into DBZ perfectly, with Toriyama's ever-evolving art, storytelling, and the stakes continued to be raised in each fight/story arc.

Dragon Ball GT has it's moments of course, but can't hold a candle to the previous material.

My personal ranking: Original Manga>DBZ>DB>DBGT

I have it like this. Dragon Ball > Dragon Ball Z Kai > DBZ Movies > Dragon Ball GT > Dragon Ball Z w/fillers > Evolution = DBAF.

Spent too much time on dbz for it to not be my favorite. Though I prefer to watch kai or read the manga for my fix as the original is way to slow (unless I watch cut clips that remove filler).

GT will always come first to me. DB comes 2nd and DBZ comes last. There's nothing really interesting in Z because it always focuses on fights. GT has some balance between adventure and fights.
