Funimation comments on Battle of Gods' status

Post by Super Sayian Prime » Sat Mar 30, 2013 5:29 pm

I feel this is worthy of a separate discussion than the giga-thread, of course the mods are free to feel otherwise. Funimation just hosted their panel at Sakuracon, and given Battle of Gods just opened hours ago in Japan, it was bound to pop up:

11:50:45 <bay|SC|FUNi> Q: DBZ Battle of the gods?
11:51:12 <bay|SC|FUNi> A; All dragonball z movies must be option to fox first and they have to turn it down, and it hasn't been even optioned yet in the US
11:51:44 <bay|SC|FUNi> (speculates that it will take 2 years till it comes out)
http://bayoab.info/live/old.php?panel=263

:|

I hope they plan on using those two years to release the 2008 JSAT, PtEtSS, and Episode of Bardock. Yes, I know there are licensing issues with that trio, but it's Dragon Ball ...

"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

Well that's a little disheartening. Not necessarily the two years (though that certainly is in it's own way), but the fact that Fox really does have first dibs on the film if they want it is a little worrying.

Two years? BS. There's no way... they know America is the #1 consumer of Dragonball outside of Japan.. or maybe even more so than Japan? They'd not make us wait two years... I refuse to believe that. We'll get the movie in weeks I bet.

I find it hard to believe that they can record and mix and entire dub in a few weeks and get DVDs ready at the same time. Wishful thinking, but it sadly won't happen.

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

It is, but not more than Japan. That's insane.

Out of morbid curiosity to see what they do with it, I would like Fox to bring the movie over.

Honestly, I'm not desperate to see an English dub of the film. Just gonna import the over-priced Japanese DVD and that'll keep me happy for two, or however many years it takes for Funimation/or Fox's release.

I mean more than France? The anime was pretty big over here a whopping decade before it was even broadcast in the US, and we had video games that the US never got like the SNES Butoden games etc.

It's not even the dub that I'm waiting for per say (though there is that too), it's the fact that I want a DVD copy I can watch on my computer or on my TV, so I definitely wouldn't be able to do anything with a Japanese DVD even if I did import it. And with those Japanese DVD prices...yeah. That's not happening anyway.

Fox should just get the rights to release it in its original japanese subtitled for a limited theatrical release in other countries... us included... and then later hire the vas who do the series dub in their respective countries to dub it.

America had DBZ Trapper Keepers. That alone should suffice to convince you that we consumed more dragonball merchandise than France or any other non-Japan country out there...

Oh no.. a theatrical release of the subbed version would be disastrous. The "general American fan" isn't ready for Japanese Goku's voice. Yes, there are still people who haven't heard it yet, trust me.

Are you trolling or 10 years old? France had all of that. Backpacks, clothes, collectible cards, pogs, etc.

Yeah, same. I just want to watch it with Steve Simmons' subtitles. 8)

In two years time, they plan on releasing this. Now, to keep us fans interested until then, we need some new home video releases. More Dragon Boxes should arrive before this movie does!

Or maybe/possibly/hopefully-but-probably-not finally putting the Jump special, Episode of Bardock, and Plan to Eliminate the Super Saiyans on legit DVD's over here? ...Hey, a man can dream. :P That and I do think it's gonna happen eventually, it's just a matter of when.

FUNimation has just been smart, whereas AB has been very stupid over the years. But, when Dragonball was on the free channels (non paying), you bet every kid knew what it was. Granted, not everybody liked it, but it was either Dragonball, Saint Seiya or Sailor Moon (and also Captain Tsubasa to some degree).

A limited release (as suggested by bleed0range) wouldn't be 'disastrous'.

You're the one who brought the topic into the thread. It's up to you to prove it. Other people can't try to disprove something that you haven't proven in the first place.
