Chris Sabat does a horrible Piccolo, but I enjoy his Vegeta. I loved the VA for Perfect Cell as well.

Re: What about the old dub did you like?
I used to find it hard to imagine Corlett as Goku in the later part of the series but then I remembered his Beast Machines performance as Cheetor where he made the character sound a lot more serious and older than his younger Beast Wars counterpart. I think he probably would of done something similar to Goku if he had kept the role.Cursed Lemon wrote: I really like Ian James Corlett as Goku, but unlike the Sabat-Vegeta arguments of maturation over the course of the series, I feel that Goku is the one that undergoes a more visible character shift. Corlett did a wonderful job as a young, more light-hearted Goku, but can you imagine his voice in the scene where Goku threatens Kaioshin? I don't know if I can. It's just a shame about Corlett's supposed professional issues (can anyone substantiate that?).

Re: What about the old dub did you like?
I think his Piccolo is wonderful by the Kai dub. It's basically just his regular speaking voice. Though I do think, if I had to choose between Chris and Scott, I'd choose Chris as Daimao over Scott, and Scott as Jr. over Chris. All in all, though, I think they're both really good at the role.Vice wrote:Chris Sabat does a horrible Piccolo, but I enjoy his Vegeta. I loved the VA for Perfect Cell as well.
And yeah, I know some people think Dameon Clarke is really hammy, but I just love his performances. I even really liked him as Scar in FMA.
Of course, I totally forgot to mention Chris Rager in my first post. Man's perfect for the part, but it was amusing watching the Arlong arc of One Piece.
Re: What about the old dub did you like?
And Sabat's Mr Popo was quite good.

I liked the music and a few voice actors more than the Japanese counterparts. For example I prefer Sonny Straight's Bardock to Nazawa's.

Woah. I left him off my list because, yeah, originally, he sounds awful, but he's shaped up to be my favorite English performance, honestly. I'm even kind of annoyed how similar Vegeta sounds to Piccolo when I watch Kai. To me, Piccolo's the guy's signature role.Vice wrote:Chris Sabat does a horrible Piccolo,

I dunno. In Kai, they sound pretty distinct and I can't imagine Piccolo speaking with Vegeta's voice (as amusing as that may be).B wrote: I'm even kind of annoyed how similar Vegeta sounds to Piccolo when I watch Kai. To me, Piccolo's the guy's signature role.

Re: What about the old dub did you like?
Of course you can tell who's voicing Vegeta and Piccolo, but Vegeta is clearly different sounding than Piccolo. Piccolo was very gravelly in Z, but now is just Sabat's voice an octave lower, while Vegeta is his voice a tad deeper but with more rasp.

Sabat's Piccolo and Vegeta sounded horribly forced and too similar during the Season 3-4 days... one of the worst performances of the day. Luckily, his voicework has improved to such a point to where Sabat's Piccolo and Vegeta are actually two of the highlight performances on Kai.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Re: What about the old dub did you like?
Really? I don't think they sounded alike at all. His Vegeta had to sound like Drummond so he spoke at a higher pitch than his normal voice, and his Piccolo was far gravellier than it is now.theoriginalbilis wrote:Sabat's Piccolo and Vegeta sounded horribly forced and too similar during the Season 3-4 days... one of the worst performances of the day. Re: What about the old dub did you like?
It was mostly in their screaming, I feel. I think that's just how Sabat's voice works, when he yells and screams, I can hear the inherent "Sabat-ness" in his voice come out, no matter what character he's playing.ABED wrote:Really? Re: What about the old dub did you like?
From the Funimation dub, I loved the voices for Gohan, Piccolo, Chichi, and the Ox Demon-King...till the voice change-over of Season Three. Also, Kelamis' Gokuh was amazing in the movies. And for the later part of the series, I love Mister Satan's voice, and Goten's, and both Trunks' had good voices also.
The relaxed/goofy music was good? I admit, there were some songs I kinda liked during the Fauconer Productions days, but the relaxed/goofy music bothered me...a LOT. ...As a nine-year-old. It was the most generic/uninspiring music they could have possible used, and it was as embarrassing to me as some of the lines from Season Three. The music made it sound like a show for a three-year-old or something. At least, in my nine-year-old head, it did. ...And my 23-year-old head. :plandoku wrote:The music. Funimation's music score was better than the music from the toei version. It fit better with the fights and even the relaxed or goofy Scenes. Over all just much better.

I actually liked the dub dialogue for Dragon Ball when it was appropriately funny.

It's about the only official dub I like now. I just can't watch the DBZ dub anymore. There are only a handful of episodes in Z I can stand to watch dubbed now because of nostalgia.matt0044 wrote:I actually liked the dub dialogue for Dragon Ball when it was appropriately funny.

Re: What about the old dub did you like?
A few episodes here and there are, in my opinion, up to Kai-dub standards. Save one cringe-inducing joke from Kaiou, the script for the episode where Gohan kills Cell was exceptionally well-adapted and faithful to the original dialogue. The acting was excellent there, too. And, as a bonus, if you're one of the (admittedly rare) fans of the "DBZ-dub-with-original-Kikuchi-music" audio track, the sound mixing on this episode was very good, too (as other episodes on the orange bricks had atrocious mixing on that track where you could hardly hear the music at all).
I appreciate all that, in hindsight. Of course, it goes without saying that they should have gotten every episode right, but as long as we're being grateful about individual episodes....that episode was a particularly important episode to get right.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: What about the old dub did you like?
I like a voice choice tracks from the Faulconer score, though as I've said not as DBZ music.
Drummond's Vegeta is always good. Second only to Horikawa. And, call me crazy, but I liked Nadolny's kid Goku.

Re: What about the old dub did you like?
My Kai watch has made me also re-watch a lot of Z for comparisons.
So..
-Most Faulconer themes (special mention to Piccolo's, both of Vegeta's and all of Cell's)
-Meredith McCoy as Eighteen
-Eric Vale's original Future Trunks voice
-Cell's return actually making sense
-A host of big moments or significant episodes, such as Vegeta's Final Flash, Gohan vs. Cell Kamehameha, etc.
-Cell Games reenactment
-"Fight you? No, I wanna kill you."
-Rick Robertson as Dabura
-Goku meeting Goten
And I loved the entire Funi dub of Dragon Ball.

Re: What about the old dub did you like?
I actually like the Faulconer music by itself, I don't think it's bad music... I just don't think it fits this series in any way shape or form, but I can honestly say I like it. I sometimes find myself humming that song he did for the Super Saiyan 3 Transformation in particular.
Also, I never really thought a lot of the actors were bad by themselves. I mean a lot of voices fit the characters to a good degree, it's the writing, direction, as well as the inexperience of the actors that kinda makes it all fall apart.
Voices I do Like tho:
Sonny Strait's Kuririn
Chris Sabat's later voices for both Piccolo and Vegeta
Cynthia Cranz' Chichi
Kyle Hebert's Gohan
Chris Rager's Mr. Satan
All 3 Cyborgs' voices
Damien Clarke's Cell
Can't think of anymore off the top of my head but I'm sure there were some.
