I think he was trying to perform closer to Shigeru Chiba's Raditz performance, which is pretty raspy, so he upped the rasp.Gyt Kaliba wrote:his Raditz in Kai just sounds...I dunno. All he does is scream every line really. I think he was severely out of practice by then though - he doesn't do a lot of voice-over anymore now that he's a higher up at FUNimation.

I thought his redub as Raditz there sounded... a bit mellow for me. Kai had him liven it up.Gyt Kaliba wrote:I like Justin Cook okay as Raditz in the Ultimate Uncut re-dub of the Saiyan arc in Z, but his Raditz in Kai just sounds...I dunno.

Huh, maybe I'm remembering his Ultimate Uncut performance more fondly than I would like it now or something. The last time I watched that stuff was before I saw the series in Japanese...my opinion may be different the next time I watch that stuff in Z dubbed again.

His Raditz in the redub really does sound mellow with not a whole lot of energy behind the voice.
In Kai however, his performance is much better with a much more natural performance.

All of his performances as Raditz are equally non-intimidating. That's why it doesn't work for me. He sounds like a teenager.

Um, how exactly? I'm not sure what sounds "teen-ish" about Cook's Raditz. It's less deep than the JPN voice, true, but a teen strictly?Duo wrote:All of his performances as Raditz are equally non-intimidating. That's why it doesn't work for me. He sounds like a teenager.

As a Latino, I had some trouble getting used to the english dub of dbz, however all my troubles were destroyed with Funimation's Dub for Kai, I personally LOVED Freeza's Voice, Chris Ayres is a beast, I also loved Vegeta's Much subtle voice instead of that grumpy ocean dub imitation :3

I haven't watched in awhile and still need to open my dvds, but I heard John Swasey voiced somebody in Kai. Does anyone know who he voiced and if his character interacted with Gohan? Wondering on that as could lead to in-jokes with their previous effort opposite each other.

Re: How did the re-cast characters turn out (in your opinion
So while I don't consider myself blinded by nostalgia, I do have my biases and I don't know if I can ever get rid of them. I'm aware enough to recognize the Z dub didn't really get to mediocre levels until the Cell Saga and even then the script was not as good as it could be.
Nevertheless, I stumbled upon a YT video of Kai's version of one of my favorite scenes from Z (Trunks going back to his time and annihilating Future 17 and 18) and I did not like the recast of Eighteen whatsoever. Ms. Clinkenbeard is a good voice-actress but I do not like her 18 at all. It sounds...normal but that's not a good thing considering Eighteen is a superpowered badass cyborg and it's even worse since Future 18 is a psychopathic superpowered badass cyborg. She shouldn't sound so plain.
I also thought Vale's Trunks was ridiculously growly there. Maybe it's not like that all the time but it sounded way too forced.
Now I'm a fair person and now that I'm actually getting involved in the Z/Kai arguments I feel obligated to watch more of Kai so as to have a better grasp of the debate. But as it stands right now, all i can say is that I absolutely adored McCoy's 18 and I do not like Clinkenbeard's. (She should have just used her Erza voice or something - now there's a strong and commanding female voice)

I have to disagree. McCoy wasn't bad but the gruffness seemed... off to me. Colleen seems to dial that back considerably and it falls in line with how the original JPN version portrays her: cool, calm, collected. Whatever floats your boat but I'd suggest that you'd watch Kai as a whole to get the biggest picture.Nikkolas wrote:Ms. Clinkenbeard is a good voice-actress but I do not like her 18 at all. Re: How did the re-cast characters turn out (in your opinion
I agree by and large. I don't dislike Colleen's 18, but prefer McCoy in the role. As for Vale, his rasp got worse, but his acting got better. However, and this isn't his fault as much as the writer or director (at least I think), but Vale makes Trunks come off as angrier than he should. Trunks is incredibly well mannered and that unfortunately doesn't come across as well in Vale's performance. I wish it did. If he did that and took down the rasp, he'd be spot on.
Matt, I'm not sure what you mean by 18's gruffness.

Okay, maybe not gruff (poor choice of words) but I find Colleen's take on the character to be more smooth sounding and fitting. Again, I don't hate McCoy.ABED wrote: Matt, I'm not sure what you mean by 18's gruffness.
BTW, isn't Trunks the one who kept his VA? Why discuss it here?
Re: How did the re-cast characters turn out (in your opinion
I was just giving my thoughts on the Kai dub from what I saw in that scene. I guess I shouldn't have brought up Trunks at all.
Sorry about that.

IMO, McCoy and Clinkenbeard are about even. McCoy gets the personality right but makes 18 sound too old, like she's in her 30s instead of a teenager. Clinkenbeard makes 18 sound age appropriate but her voice is too casual and flat. 18 needs to sound sharp and snarky. 18 is the only re-cast in Kai I'm iffy about, the other re-cast are vastly superior to their Z counterparts. Hopefully Ocean will follow suit and recast all of their miscasted roles for their dub of Kai.

What's up with the announcer for the Cell Games? Just watched something I DVR'd off of NickToons and the announcer for the Cell Games makes me want to puke.

I love this voice. It's so over-the-top. But given Mr. Satan's a wrestler, it's should be natural. I don't get why people hate it.ShadowDude112 wrote:What's up with the announcer for the Cell Games? I don't think either 17 or 18's English voices sound age appropriate. All of them sound older than teens, even Clinkenbeard. McCoy's voice may be deeper but it's sexy and works for the character. She reminds me in many ways of a girl I went to high school with who was a platinum blond, beautiful, and had a deep yet feminine voice.andrewtuell1991 wrote:IMO, McCoy and Clinkenbeard are about even.
