Do You Feel Old Yet?
Been seeing these picture/survey-esque things all over the internet and I thought, why not?
- The Jump Special is nearly 5 years old, as is Burst Limit- that game still looks shiny and new.
- The First Raging Blast, Dragon Ball Kai, Dragon Ball Evolution and Funimation's first Dragon Box will all be 5 years old at some point next year.
- The Orange Bricks started coming out 6 years ago.
- Funimation's initial run of the series ended around 10 years ago.
- Funimation's dubs of DBZ Movies 12 and 13 came out close to seven years ago.
- The podcast is closing in on 8 years
- You joined this forum in ____. 2010, that's my entire time in college. I know three years ain't long, but when you start thinking about it like that, it really puts things into perspective.
I know we're along way out from, say, 10+ years; but when they start getting past the 5 year mark is when you start realizing how fast time is moving.
This'll probably sound silly to a lot of people since some may still see it as recent, 5 years isn't that long, etc. So I'm gonna throw this out here and ask, what makes you guys feel old? (in relation to Dragon Ball, of course)

I don't feel old yet, but I do feel time as flown by so fast! I've been here for 6 years and 4 months! I just can't believe that and I can't believe how long of a fan I have been to the series and this site!

Kai, Evolution, and the R1 DBOX all feel extremely new to me. I can't even believe my join date is 2008. I must've started posting long after I joined.

Re: Do You Feel Old Yet?
I remember when the "Ultimate Uncut" dub was being shown on Toonami, and then around the time "Season One" was being released, I felt it had been forever since I saw the UUE dub, when it was just 2 years. Now the first US Dragon Box is 3 years old, but it feels like just yesterday it was first announced.
It seems that time flies by faster the older I get.

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

None of these stuff feels old. These stuff came out like a few years ago and nothing changed since then. If it was like 16 years ago today that Final Bout came out then it would work better.

Re: Do You Feel Old Yet?
It was recently the 3rd anniversary of when I joined, seems like only yesterday. I also realised it's going to be the 3rd anniversary of that idiotic "Bitch I Look Like Goku" song, man that brings back a lot of memories of sitting on my crappy laptop back when I was living in Queensland.
To some people 5-6 years is along time. Even 3-4 years.Hellspawn28 wrote:None of these stuff feels old. These stuff came out like a few years ago and nothing changed since then. If it was like 16 years ago today that Final Bout came out then it would work better.

Well, I began a fan in 1999, and joined the forum in 2004. DB is basically been a part of my life since I was a kid.

To me, 5-10 is hardly a long time ago. I was in High School when most of these things came out and I don't feel nostalgic for them. I feel like not a whole has changed between now and 2007 other then the site has changed.ringworm128 wrote: To some people 5-6 years is along time. Even 3-4 years.

Re: Do You Feel Old Yet?
10 years is definitely a significant chunk of time. 10 years ago, I was a senior in high school, Friends and Buffy were still on the air, I still lived with my parents, blu rays didn't exist, most TV's were square, I'm pretty sure dial up was widely used, there was no twitter or facebook, very few people knew who Christopher Nolan was, HBK competed in his first WM in 5 years, Bush was in his first term, the financial sector hadn't imploded, the housing bubble was still inflating...
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Heck yes I feel old. But I'm about four years younger than VegettoEX so I try to remind myself I'm not the oldest.

Re: Do You Feel Old Yet?
Time gets weirder the further you go, I've found. That feeling of weird isn't the way I'd think feeling "old" is like. I think of "old" as more of a feeling of "no longer useful in most situations" like a floppy disk or a VHS tape. Or more of a feeling of just being worn out and tired. I don't feel worn out and tired (hell, if anything BOG reinvigorated me in regards to me being a fan of this series; though now that we're on the downswing again--which will culminate for me in when I actually get to see the movie--I can't tell you how long these feelings/this motivation I have now will last, or even how much longer I'll be around in this fandom. Everything is slowly falling back out into flux again; it makes me sad but I see its necessity.).
On hiatus.

Re: Do You Feel Old Yet?
I've been a fan since October 1998. That is about fifteen years. I should feel old, but like in Dragon Ball, there is always someone stronger than you. Kei and Kunzait both fall into this category.

Re: Do You Feel Old Yet?
I guess it says something about the strength of the franchise, since it's the only anime I've been so passionate about for nearly 15 years.
Sure, I've been a big fan of other series (Gundam, Hajime no Ippo, One Piece, American comics), but as much as I like them, I don't follow them nearly as intently as Dragon Ball. Of course, having an amazing online community like Kanzenshuu helps a lot.

Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
Re: Do You Feel Old Yet?
Maybe... since the peak period of the popularity of the series was IMO 2004 but since I've only just (well, two years) gotten into the original Japanese full-time, it still feels all fresh to me. I only just saw the Garlic Jr arc these past few days.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.
Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

Re: Do You Feel Old Yet?
I'm a 22 year old Dragon Ball fan, and I don't feel old yet. In about 5 years though, when I approach 30, I will probably start to feel old. I will never consider myself and "old" fan because when Dragon Ball Z was huge in the sates, I was 10-11. I am a person who was at the perfect age to enjoy it when it was on TV here. Others who were older then were able to delve deeper into it by means of the internet, and now I'm sure they own more merchandise and may at times feel far more jaded then I do with certain aspects of the franchise ( for instance what some consider to be a crappy slow-paced anime, yes the original ). So in a way I'm lucky in that aspect. It was so damn mysterious back in the day, and even now it feels so epic and legendary. I love it.
I feel my late appreciation and arrival to and for the original anime and manga doesn't necessarily make me and "old" fan, even eleven years after the series ended in Japan. When I was 17, I began to read the manga, and became very curious about the voices, music, and especially the dialogue of the original anime. I then learned it was it's own beast all together and I am so glad I discovered it. Dragon Boxes ftw!
The series doesn't seam like it's anywhere near dead or dying. Battle of Gods was and is still so exciting, it bodes well for us American fans, and our hopes for getting new material.
I won't feel old until I own it all and have witnessed it all several, several times. At the same time, it seams we could keep getting more new Dragon Ball stuff. It may never end!
