It's funny to see just how butchered the script by funny was (thank goodness for Kai!).

My favorite moment:
In the Android Saga, Vegeta is on a cliff contemplating his loss against the Androids. He yells out "NO!", and the Japanese subtitle reads "Yes!". Me and my friends laughed nonstop for the next minute.

I actually felt the opposite, there were a lot of times when they didn't follow the script but there are plenty of times where it stuck at least somewhat to the original script.

You can see with many of DBZ's sister shows how things were spiced up as well doing that. Was watching Panty & Stocking with some buds once, and though it was the dub, guy turned the subs on due to noise going on, and saw quite the differences at times. (for those who don't know, due to Gainax asking them, the Panty & Stocking dub is more raunchy than the Japanese version).

Doing that wouldn't make me laugh, but rather feel shame for what FUNimation did to the scripts, haha.

I played that game once, and just shook my head in disappointment... at what could've been. Kai, though, awesomely accurate! *thumbs up*

I have mixed feelings about that. On the one hand, yes, I do that a lot when I have the option. On the other hand, I find that when I'm able to enjoy the dub most is when I have minimal control over my viewing options. When I'm watching the Kai dub, I've always enjoyed it the most when I'm watching the Nicktoons-edited version on TV. I can't rewind, fast-forward, change the audio track, turn on subtitles to compare the script for accuracy...I simply watch and take it in. And I've found that to be the most enjoyable way to watch the dub, because I have no choice other than to watch the dub rather than grade it.

Of course, like I said, I do have a tendency to listen to the dub with subs on when possible.

Every once in a while, though, I'm surprised to see a line pop up that I thought was a dub error and it turns out to be accurate. I remember watching a scene during the Freeza arc where Kuririn and Gohan are about to summon the Namekian Dragon (before they knew about the whole "password/Namekian language" issue), and Vegeta is hiding under the ship, watching them. He called Goku....Goku. Not Kakarot. I remember thinking, "Oh c'mon, FUNi, that's such a basic error, didn't you read the original translation!?" But then I turned the subs on....and the Japanese audio...and Vegeta said "Goku" there, too. I was like, "Really?......Huh."

Similarly, I remember when Kid Trunks went Super Saiyan for the first time in front of his father, Vegeta asked Trunks if Goten could go Super Saiyan as well. Trunks said he could too, and then Vegeta said in frustration, "Of course, it's a Super Saiyan bargain sale!" Again, I thought, "FUNi....quit....with the comedic 'punching-up'! It doesn't say that in the su--oh, actually wait, it does."

That's how my girlfriend and I have been watching it, not really to compare but to get the best of both. I think we're in agreement that the original script is better, but every so often a goofy dub joke is actually pretty funny. I tend to appreciate both versions more and perceive them as being higher quality when watching them on their own and not comparing them to each other, and I also get drawn into them more that way, but for someone who's completely new to the series, surrounded by dub-fans and can keep up with two dialogues comfortably, I think both together works well.

Hmmm......color me confused. Maybe it wasn't that exact scene, but I could have sworn I remember a scene around that area where Vegeta called him "Goku" even in the subtitled version, and I was watching the orange bricks at the time (which didn't have dubtitles available as an option).

It's not a word-for-word translation, but the phrase "bargain sale" is what I was concerned with, and that was in both versions. In the Japanese version, Vegeta even says the phrase "bargain sale" in English. I was completely convinced that that was FUNimation's "comedy punch-up" writing, and was surprised to learn that wasn't the case.

Wouldn't say it's fun or hilarious but it was interesting watching the FUNimation English Z Dub on Dragon Box Z with the English subtitles activated, allowed me to experience both versions at the same time.

There were times when the dub was similar to the subtitle, so it wasn't all that bad, people just like to exaggerate. FUNimation's English Kai dub is better than the Z dub but nothing that I'd care about.
