What about the old dub did you like?
Re: What about the old dub did you like?
I thought that the SSJ3 transformation for Goku was pretty epic, and one of the best themes in the FUNi dub. Schemmel could really scream too, I believe that he passed out recording that part, if memory serves me correctly.

Super Buu's and Cell's voices were perfect fits. Also, Bardock doesn't sound like a woman.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Re: What about the old dub did you like?
Thinking about it, my favorite voices from Z...
McCoy's Eighteen
Huber's Seventeen
Clarke's Cell
Vale's Future Trunks
Roberton's Dabura
Strait's Krillin
Roger's Mr. Satan
Williams' Gero/Android 20
Brice Armstrong's Captain Ginyu
^ The DBZ dub had a lot of evident flaws I won't defend but I think these VAs all turned in great performances a majority of the time.
For Dragon Ball...
Nadolny's Kid Goku
Williams' Tao
Sabat's King Piccolo
Huber's Pilaf
Burgmeier's Tenshinhan
Vale's Tenkaichi Budokai Announcer
Also I'm gonna say in a So Bad It's Good Category, Brice Armstrong's Ginyu in Bulma's body. His "girly" voice as he's trying to pass himself off as Bulma is amazing.

I must be the only person in the world who found the Budokai announcer to be insufferable in the english dub. He just wouldn't ever shut up.

I always have and always will be a bigger fan of the Ocean dub than any other dub, for me it's the best. I am actually one of the rare Ocean fans that prefer later Ocean dub episodes over the earlier Ocean dub. I love the Mega Man music they use, i think it fits in well
.
I still like the Funimation dub, just nowhere near as much as Ocean. I loved how they did the Buu arc, especially the music. The problem i have with the Funimation dub is that too many voices do my head in. Master Roshi, Nappa, Raditz, Vegeta, Bulma, Cell, 16,19, Kid Trunks, Goten, Captain Ginyu, i could go on. Just too many annoying voices for me. I like Bulma's voice when she doesn't shout, but because she shouts so often i find it hard to listen too.
I am not a fan of the Kai dub at all which is fine by me really because i am not really a fan of Kai. I can't listen to any anime in Japanese, it's just too much for my ears to handle. If i have the chance to listen to any anime in English i am going to take it.
Oh and this may be a bit controversial on here but i despise Goku's Japanese voice, i seriously don't see the point in a grown man sounding like a woman.
In a way i am glad all these different dubs of Dragon Ball / Z / GT / KAI exist, it keeps people talking about the franchise and that can only be a good thing.

Goku`s SSJ 3 transformation scene!
Also known as "GeniDude" and "NerdyNorwegian"!

Ohh, ok. I wasn't 100% sure on that. Both screams were pretty beastly though. You're not the only one. I found Eric Vale's Announcer voice obnoxious too; to me, he sounded more like a car salesman than an sports announcer. Of course, the added dialogue never really helped.Vice wrote:I must be the only person in the world who found the Budokai announcer to be insufferable in the english dub. Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
Re: What about the old dub did you like?
On the other hand, he is a fighting tournament announcer. It may be stereotypical but I kinda felt Vale did great with that role.theoriginalbilis wrote:You're not the only one. Re-watching the 22nd Tournament Saga, I gotta say I rather enjoyed Funi's sense of humor.

I like the dub anyway but a few things that stand out to me are some of the the character themes by Team Faulconer. I prefer Bradford Jackson as King Cold, Kent Williams as Dr Gero, Dameon Clarke as Semi Perfect Cell to their Japanese counterparts. I also love the idea of giving Jheese a United Kingdom (England, Scotland etc) accent or an Australasian accent.

Despite Season 3's flaws, it's still better than Funimation's worst series Master of Martial Hearts. Season 3 ends with you feeling good, whereas MoMH leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth.

Yeah, that episode was like the producer's thought, "Hmmm, nice premise. Sounds like it could be a promising Anime."Super Sonic wrote:Despite Season 3's flaws, it's still better than Funimation's worst series Master of Martial Hearts. Re: What about the old dub did you like?
I actually thought most of the cast was pretty alright by the time they got to the Cell stuff, and I rather enjoy the dub's version of Goku transforming into SSJ for the first time. Honestly, at this point it's only the script and some of the early performances that hold the dub back for me, and even then I have a soft spot for Season 3 because it's so bad that I can't help but laugh at it. Oh, and although I normally hate it when anime dubs have music changes, I have to admit that I kinda like some of Falconer's score as well as the dub opening themes. I think that's mostly nostalgia, though.
Re: What about the old dub did you like?
While the censorship bugged me, Roshi's dub euphemisms during his perverse moments could be amusing.

I disagree. While I did watch the FUNI version first, it wasn't until after I was mid-way into High School that I was able to watch the episodes with any sort of regularity (yeah, as it turned out, Cell standing there with his limbs blown off after Gohan's kamehameha was NOT the best time for my parents to walk in on the series...also didn't help that I was watching the show without their permission), so I think I can say that it's not just nostalgia that Team Faulconer was usually really good...
I mean, I might have a LITTLE bit, since I played Legacy of Goku II (and I think Buu's Fury) before watching the English dub, and distinctly remember loving the music, but I think I'm one of the few dub fans who can say with almost 100% certainty that it's not just nostalgia.
