Some stuff doesn't age as well. For example, this was hilarious when I was in fifth grade, but not as much now.

As for lines I liked, Frieza says about he should've brought the Ginyu Force to Namek, and one henchman replies, "But Master Frieza, do you think they're necessary? But if you want them dispatched we will." Frieza replies to do so, chuckles and says, "Oh, and Nimoe (spl?) it sounded as if you were questioning my order. Were you?" Guy shakes his head, and Frieza blows him away saying it's too bad as he got blasted to another dimension for no reason then. Something about Pauline Newstone's serpentine voice made it work.

One of my favorite lines was in the Ocean dub when Vegeta goes to take over Freeza's base on Namek and sees Freeza's guards. Vegeta says: "Well, it looks like Freezas out on the town. This is going to be easier than coloring inside the lines."

That wasn't the Ocean-cast dub, that was FUNi's in-house season 3 dub.

penguintruth wrote:It's that sort of flimsy justification that makes dub studios think they can trample all over a show with their stupid, made-up nonesense. An English dub of a Japanese animated program should reflect the Japanese script as close as possible, with some smoothing over where necessary, but in the English language. It is the representative of that show in the English language. If it doesn't reflect the original intention of the show, it might as well not be the show at all, because in some ways, it isn't.

No dub studio today could get away with what Funimation did with DBZ back then without a massive outrage. People like to apologize for it because it happened "years ago", but there were plenty of more faithful dubs back then, and even if there weren't, it's still not excusable. Fine, if they want to take a few liberties here and there, great, sometimes Japanese doesn't translate comfortably to English, they have to fill mouth flaps, etc. But when they completely manafacture dialogue that has nothing to do with the original script, they're just wiping their ass with the show and the people who support it are enjoying the smell of Funimation's crap.

If Funimation did today with any show what they did with DBZ back then, heads would roll. But people come up with this stupid, "Aw, come on, we all grew up watching it this way, don't be so critical." Yeah, well we grew up with Robotech, Voltron, and other atrocities. Did they get us into the medium? Sure. But the approach to them was wrong.
I get what you're saying and all and I know you're entitled to express your opinion, but why would you come to a thread called "Little Dub Lines you Love" and trash it? That just looks like you're trying to get a rise out of people, especially since you're criticizing a dub from the mid 90's.

That's early Sabat, when he was doing a (hilariously bad) Drummond impression.

Vegeta- I do a lot of push ups and sit ups and I drink plenty of juice.

I was also surprised when reading the manga and watching the Japanese version (at least in Kai) when SSJ Vegeta tells Kuririn and the others to 'to go home and drink some milk' when fighting the Artifical Humans.

EDIT-

Kuririn- Man, that android is toast!
Piccolo- Yeah...more like burnt toast!
Image

It's terrible but kinda funny especially with Piccolo's facial expression!
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

That look tells me even Piccolo is ashamed of what he's saying. He just had a horrible feeling that his status as the most badass cast member was slipping away and he was trying to hold onto it by any means necessary.

That Vegeta quote reminds me that there are some Dub Memes that I do love. I have no idea why it's so funny but it is to me and apparently many other people.
Tien: Vegeta! I didn't realize you were going to be here too.
Vegeta: Is that okay?
Tien: As a matter of fact, it isn't.

While riding my bike to work this morning, one I used to get a kick out of randomly popped into my head. Freeza's: "There are three things I cannot tolerate: cowardice, bad haircuts, and military insurrection. And our friend Vegeta possesses all three!"

And I know the one my best friend and I always used to imitate (aside from the "So... I did. Ha!" which has already been mentioned): "Why is this thing in here? I think I'll have a sports soda instead! It's much better for me... and tastes great!" Something about Kelamis's delivery was just golden. And, of course, now it reminds me of, "I can't drink those! Those are nuts!"

It's over 9000! Ocean Dub, Vegeta.
That time your teacher asked you to draw Cell in biology class.

To be perfectly honest, I couldn't care less about the fans a re-issue might alienate because if all they're concerned about is being able to scalp the people who were either unaware of the Dragon Boxes or couldn't afford them at the time, they're just leeches and deserve to have their greed backfire on them.

Do video game lines count? Jheese: "We're about to get creamed and there's nothing we can do about it!" Chris Sabat's delivery makes that line for me.

It's several episodes later. It's right when Goku and Ginyu start fighting, and FUNimation's in-house cast had begun dubbing the series.

That shot was from when Piccolo was upset that Vegeta came and stole his thunder.

When Piccolo said "burnt toast", it was off screen (like most of their added lines).

Hey, there were much better dubs from that time.

But... I guess I kind of like "The sleeper has awakened... I am the prince of all Saiyans once again!"

It's close to the Japanese line, anyway. But I think I'm attached to it because of it being in the Toonami introduction of season 4. Nostalgia dies hard even in me.
Kentai wrote:Son Gokuu is a fascinating character anyway, because he is - at face value, anyway - an idiot savant. The victim of violent head trauma as an infant [...] he's a simple bumpkin with a fair share of brain damage who's natural talents to work out what's wrong compensate for his broad lack of common sense. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

That's clearly edited. Look at the left and right borders of the screen before Piccolo's face appears.

I distinctly remember hearing that line as a kind and thinking "why would Vegeta be coloring if he's a grown up?" In retrospect, I guess that was the point. I wasn't the most clever child...

ImmaGinyu specifically put this on his channel at my request.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDGRc0KFYqI

Also insert stock Ocean Vegeta rages clips, "you won't escape my wrath," "I don't need this stinking planet," etc.

One thing that always got to me was Piccolo's speech to Gohan before he dies. Scott McNeil just straight killed it there (no pun intended).

Oh, and Frieza's "balls" comments. "I want to caress them..."

I almost forgot about this, absolutely masterful.
