Little Dub Lines you Love
Re: Little Dub Lines you Love
In the Ocean dub, I was actually really fond of:
Vegeta: "Let's see what you've got, Kakarot! Galick Gun, FIYAAA! (FIRE)"
The delivery of that line left an impression on me that I'll never forget.

Have to say, this guy owned this role and made it his own. If not for censoring and he was able to bluntly talk about killing, it would've been perfect. And to top it off, he's played by Megatron, which makes it cool vicariously.

Vegeta: "Funny... I seem to recall Kakarot being fed the same information right before he transformed; the distinct look on your faces when he went Super Saiyan didn't exactly inspire confidence. One does not predict or calculate power like ours."

our portuguese dub has so many epic lines that I have a hard time to remember them all at once.
Is like a abridged version itself.

Mine is from the Ocean dub.
It in the Namek arc, when Vegeta realises that Gohan stole one his Dragon Balls. It goes something like this:
"YOU WILL ALL FACE MY WRAAAAAAATH!!!"
The line itself wasn't great, but SWEET BUTTERY JESUS did he sound pissed!!!!

I don't think this has been mentioned, but I like Trunks' comments about finding schematics for a toaster in Gero's lab.
And I also really like Vegeta's "That's right boys, mondo cool".

I'd love to hear Ryo Horikawa's delivery of this line:
EDIT: Also a fan of the previously mentioned line with Cell and the bee stinger.Cell: Your cells are a part of me!
Super Vegeta: Now I'm going to take you apart. How ironic.

Ugh....."mondo cool." Oh boy....that line. Even when I first heard that line, and was still a kid under the impression that DBZ was an American-made cartoon (and not a rather poorly-adapted English dub of a Japanese anime), I hated that line. I cringed when I heard it. I also remember thinking that whoever wrote that line obviously had no idea how kids talked.Saiga wrote:And I also really like Vegeta's "That's right boys, mondo cool".

"Mondo cool" is no worse than "Holy cosmos, look at that thing! That's one whopper of a lizard!"

Re: Little Dub Lines you Love
Well, I had the good fortune of missing that particular episode when it aired on Toonami due to an after-school commitment, and by the time I got around to that scene again, it was on the "Season 3" box set, where they (thankfully) redubbed and rewrote that line. So I learned about that horror after the fact.penguintruth wrote:"Mondo cool" is no worse than "Holy cosmos, look at that thing! That's one whopper of a lizard!"
It does make you wonder, though...a couple of the voice actors have said that during the recording of the DBZ dub, they were occasionally given lines so corny that they compulsively begged to have them rewritten. So if they thought "mondo cool," and "whopper of a lizard" was acceptable, it makes you wonder what atrocities of writing were adjusted and never saw the light of day. For example, Sean Schemmel once mentioned that he was given a script where Goku referred to himself as a "Super Duper Saiyan," and he flat-out refused to say the line.
If that's true, that was wise of him. That likely would have gone down in history as one of the worst lines in the dub (which is saying something).

Re: Little Dub Lines you Love
Huh, I wonder if the TFS line about Super Duper Saiyan in the recent episode was a reference to that.
The actors can contest the lines as much as they want, but at the end of the day, they still have to record what they're told. Sabat would later reflect that his least favorite line he's ever done is Piccolo's fusion speech.

I can't say for sure if it was or not, but when I first heard that line, that was my immediate assumption.Storm wrote:Huh, I wonder if the TFS line about Super Duper Saiyan in the recent episode was a reference to that?
And yes, you're right, the actors can contest to a degree, but at the end of the day, if they're thought of as too difficult to work with, they're fired. Unfortunately, they were working with management who did not particularly care about the quality of the final product. Thankfully, it would seem that the people who did care about producing a quality dub (like Chris Sabat and Justin Cook) gradually gained more power behind the scenes as time went on.

Re: Little Dub Lines you Love
They got a new script writer around the Buu saga, and it shows. Whereas before it was pretty much 50/50 if a dub line was accurate, Buu was more like...75/25.
Good work, FUNi! A C is an improvement for you guys at the turn of the century. Even if I'm not always the biggest fan of their work these days, at least now you get the impression that they really care about the integrity of the series (particularly Chris Sabat, who talks passionately about his work on it, not just as a voice actor, but as a director).

Personally, I didn't feel so incredible about it.
EDIT: Bah, it didn't work as well as I hoped.
