Non-Anime, Dragon Ball Fan
Re: Non-Anime, Dragon Ball Fan
This is me, although there are a few other anime/manga series I enjoy (as in, few enough to count on one hand).
Really, I couldn't care less about the medium or country of origin. If I like something, I like it. I'm no more likely to seek out or dismiss something because it's an anime/manga property, although I do find a number of the industry's tropes particularly problematic, so I suppose I do approach most of them with an initial hesitation.
I'm actually the same way with American comics. There are a few properties I really enjoy, but I'm no more likely to seek something out just because it's in that medium, and I find a number of things the larger industry does really off-putting.

Re: Non-Anime, Dragon Ball Fan
I do like some other anime, but I am not as in tune with other anime like I am with Dragon Ball. I've definitely spent the most time and money on this anime than any other. In fact, Dragon Ball is the only anime that I've purchased on DVD.
The only other anime I like that I would say is close to Dragon Ball for me is Hunter X Hunter and Astro Boy. Hunter X Hunter is, no doubt, one of the best shonen manga/anime in this generation.
Other than that, I casually like some obscure anime such as Now and Then, Here and There, Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru, and Nobody's Boy: Remi, amongst others.

More like liking How I Met Your Mother but not having interest in watching other TV series.VegettoEX wrote:I don't see how it's any different from liking, say, baseball, but not considering yourself an overall sports fan.
Which is totally OK.
Sorry, I can't speak English very well, but I'm trying my best.

Re: Non-Anime, Dragon Ball Fan
From everything I watched/know Dragon ball and Gintama are the best animes ever and the only ones deserved to be called "masterpieces" by me
FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood is 2 epic too.

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Which is kinda/sorta what I and a bunch of other people in this thread have been getting at.
"Anime" is just a label we use for a certain category of animation -- one from a particular country and, more often than not wrapped up in that, one embodying a certain amount of particular tropes. Liking one of the shows on your list doesn't guarantee someone has anything to gain by checking out the rest.
And for the record, while I do like a few properties you have there, Dragon Ball included, I find others terribly off-putting (mostly ones that take themselves more seriously and play more heavily into those tropes). I love the hell out of Dragon Ball, but my favorite TV show is probably Mad Men. I read some comic books, both wacky and slightly more serious, but most of my preferred literature is small-run literary short fiction. It's just all over, you know? There's no reason to feel like you have to stick to one subset of fiction, just as there's no reason to feel like enjoying something in one particular category obligates you to check out the rest.

Re: Non-Anime, Dragon Ball Fan
I like a good deal from your list as well. You have good taste, Hellspawn28. I'm generally of the same opinion as you. Though Dragon Ball is fantastic, I consider it a gateway title mostly... I do think most people who dismiss anime/manga are those who have actually seen very little of it. Even as little as Toriyama follows anime/manga, even he has acknowledged that there are some titles that he likes (like One Piece or Osamu Tezuka's titles.)Hellspawn28 wrote: Battle Angel Alita

One Piece
Riki-Oh (the manga and live-action film)
Rurouni Kenshin
Saint Seiya
Trigun
And for the record... my interests do vary quite a bit. As an animator, I tend to like animation and cartoons from any country as long as they're entertaining. I'm also big into films/filmmaking (which is an incredibly diverse medium), fictional short stories, history, video games, a few American comics, and other general nerdery.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
