DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
I'm trying to decide between buying the movie packs for all of the DBZ movies or buying the blu rays. Just wondering for people who have the movie packs, are they like Dragon Box quality? Or just regular DVD...
The blu-rays are around 20 bucks a piece and they only give you 2 movies (sometimes 3) in each where as the movie packs are the better deal.
Trying to decide if the blu-rays really are that much better in quality and worth spending that much more money on the movies. I appreciate any help in advance.

They aren't Dragon Box quality and are the same releases as the
BluRay (and DVD) steelbooks but repackaged.

I recently had to ask myself the same question and went with the movie packs. They are newer and I like the box art way more. I'm sure that the blue ray version has better quality but not by much. Plus, the movie packs come in 4's and 5's so it makes it well worth your money.

Re: DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
Yeah, I know it may sound stupid but I freaking love the box art of those movie packs which makes me tempted to buy them. And clearly they are the cheaper option... I just am wondering if the blu-ray quality is worth saving for and getting them all. Saw some clips on YouTube of Fusion Reborn in blu ray and it looks just amazing...

You can't trust YouTube for video samples, the uploaders tend to filter the quality to somehow make it seem better and not to forget that YouTube compresses videos so they don't have their original quality as they did originally.
Going by these screenshots from Blu-ray.com they generally appear to be of good picture quality:

This last screenshot of Vegeta looks pretty damn bright.
Anywho, if I were you, I'd wait a while longer to see if FUNimation releases the Dragon Box of the Dragon Ball films.

^ Thanks a ton for all the help. Do you have any idea when Funimation is supposed to announce their decision on the movie Dragon Box?

Re: DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
FUNimation does have the rights for the Dragon Box films, but they have yet to announce anything. They released the repackaged movie sets instead, when they had access to the Dragon Box masters. Pretty weird in my opinion, but maybe they just think the movies in Dragon Box form won't sell as well as the repackaged sets due to the Dragon Box Z sets themselves being lesser sold than the season sets.
So mondo lame.

Re: DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
A while ago FUNimation had a digital survey regarding which Dragon Box edition the customers would like most to be released, and until now there is absolutely no details revealed.
I guess it would be by this order:
1) Dragon Box: Dragon Ball Z
2) Dragon Box: Dragon Ball
3) Dragon Box: Dragon Ball GT
4) Dragon Box: The Movies
DBZ again first because there's not a proper release in stock available (Orange Bricks are mediocre), and then the price of Dragon Box 2 of DBZ would decrease immensely, imo.

Re: DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
So if you guys were buying the movies for the first time, do you think it's worth paying a bit more money for the Blu-Rays? The DVD movie packs are just so conveniently priced... I can get all 13 movies for around 50 bucks, where as I could probably only get around 5 movies for that on blu-ray.

Re: DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
For the first time I'd get the DVDs simply because of the packing. It's a good deal. And with an upscale player you'll probably get close to blu ray anyways. Then you can buy your favorite movies on bluray if you really want.
Re: DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
Yeah I just use my PS3. I am a quality nerd but maybe I can just get certain movies on bluray? My favorites are 12 and 13, but I'd love to have Bojack on bluray too... Ugh, decisions like this shouldn't be this difficult haha. Trying to figure out if the quality is worth spending that much more money for the blus.eledoremassis02 wrote:For the first time I'd get the DVDs simply because of the packing. It's a good deal. If you are a quality-nerd you should try to get the Dragon Box version of the films somehow rather than this because they offer far better quality, regardless that it's on DVD (Dragon Box) whereas FUNimation's remaster is on Blu-ray.SativaSam wrote:Yeah I just use my PS3. Shame that the remaster isn't any near those DBZ Level Sets, because if so, it would be the definitive version to get.

Re: DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
^ I'd love to have the Dragon Box of the movies, but I don't know any Japanese except "SON GOKOU-DAH"
So there wouldn't be much sense for me to buy it. I've read online that apparently you can add subtitles to it, but I have no idea how to do that.

Re: DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
......Is it just me, or do the Blu-Rays seem to have much higher-quality, better-looking video than the orange bricks?
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Is that sarcasm?TheBlackPaladin wrote:......Is it just me, or do the Blu-Rays seem to have much higher-quality, better-looking video than the orange bricks?
EDIT: So can I please get a final verdict from you guys here? Should I:
A) Buy the new DVD movie packs as listed here: http://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Ball-Movie ... e+pack+dbz
B) Buy all of the blu-ray releases: http://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Ball-Doubl ... +of+trunks
C) Wait until the Dragon Box comes out
I'm leaning towards A or B, because it's not looking like Funimation will release that box over here, and I'm just wondering what the video quality is like with the DVD and Blu-ray side by side... Wish I could see a comparison from someone.
Re: DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
Blu Rays are better, but the Movie packs are better value for money. I prefer the DVD steelbook packaging, but some of them are expensive now, if you are in the UK the Blu Rays are not Region free though.
Next to get; Leged of Saiyan figures and Freeza's force
If anyone sees
Any of the Legend of Saiyan line going cheapish
Or any other Banpresto DBZ figure
If anyone has a cooler steelbook dvd that wants to sell it (prefer new but used is fine) when/if the dragon box movies comes out contact me

Re: DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
I think if you really want the best quality, wait for the Dragon Box Movies, but from the other options, I'd say the movie packs because of value for money.

Re: DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
Well, no, that wasn't sarcasm. I ask because I was under the impression that the movies went through the same "restoration" process as the episodes on the orange bricks. So, theoretically, putting them on high-definition format like Blu-Ray would only serve to expose their problems even more. However, the blu-rays don't strike me as being nearly as bad-looking as the orange bricks. In fact, at the risk of revealing how totally uninformed I am.......I'd even say the blu-rays look good.SativaSam wrote:Is that sarcasm?TheBlackPaladin wrote:......Is it just me, or do the Blu-Rays seem to have much higher-quality, better-looking video than the orange bricks? The orange bricks are so badly saturated that just about anything would be higher quality, especially blu-ray.

Re: DBZ Movie Packs or Blu-Rays?
Does anyone have any idea as to when an announcement could come from Funimation about bringing the Dragon Box movies over to America?
I wanna buy those movie packs, but knowing my luck, the minute I buy them, they'll announce the Dragon Box...
