Dragon Ball Z Shin Butouden (Sega Saturn)

Post by Tsukento » Thu Apr 20, 2006 5:21 am

Okay, I've recently purchased a Sega Saturn (yes, I'm aware I'm pretty much 10 years late) and have the ability to play import games. I've noticed there are two Dragon Ball Z games for the console, Shin Butouden and Legends. I hear Legends is okay at best, so I'm turning to SB, which I can buy for $20.

Has anyone here played it and can give me their opinions on the game and what to expect? I rather liked the Butouden series and saw a few clips of gameplay and it looked rather interesting.

Mini review:

The last game in the Bôtuden series. The characters are handdrawn and there are, including the hidden ones, 27 fighters. Even Muten Roshi or Mr. Satan are among the fighters.
Like in the other Bôtuden games you fight one-on-one matches. Split-screen, layer-change and cool Super Specials are there again.
In the Story Mode, you choose a character (the gag/just-for-fun-characters are dislabled here) and fight nine matches against the cpu.
Aside this mode, there are Versus (which is divided into 1P vs 2P, 1P vs com and com vs com), Group Battle, Tournament and the Mister Satan Mode.
In the Mister Satan Mode, you "play" Mister Satan and you have to bet money on a chosen fighter. You don't fight by yourself. You can "cheat" for your fighter with items (give him energy drinks or throw banana peelings in front of his opponent).

In my opinion it's the best DBZ game (thought the Bukuu series is also very good). There is so much atmosphere and it catches the spirit of the show very well. The gameplay is very close to the other Bôtuden games, but it's a little faster than Super Bôtuden 3. Also there is a real combo system.

I have a Saturn, and I own both Legends & Shin Butouden. I can tell you without any hesitation that Shin Butouden is the best Dragon Ball 2D fighter ever to come out, so far. Get it now no matter what the price is.

Legends is great on the Saturn too, and also on PSX. I enjoyed both versions. But you might as well go for the Saturn version. It just looks a lot better IMO. Plus, there's more interaction in the levels than in the PSX version.

Shin Butoden is a very cool game. I own it for my Saturn, and it is pretty fun. It is fast paced, and quite an enjoyable game. Ultimate Battle 22 for PSX is like a scaled down junk version in slow motion version of the same game with psuedo 3D backgrounds. Saturn game has all 2D backgrounds and the character sprites are larger and more detailed. Only thing better about the PSX game is the anime intro is much better, that's it.
