Mr. Clarke's Perfect Cell is interesting... He seems to be going with the way he initially portrayed Perfect Cell back in Z. Over a somewhat rapid period of time he evolved Perfect Cell's voice to have that higher pitched, perpetually smug and ultra-sophisticated tone.

But initially the voice was low and didn't have that same high mocking note he would have for the rest of the series. Mr. Clarke is basically using that same deeper voice and he is lacking the....accent? His Cell always seemed to have some weird accent in my mind but I have no idea what kind. Whatver it was, he doesn't have it anymore.

I gotta say, I miss the old voice just for how hammy it was. "Thank you Goku, I will take this bean without hesitation!" anyone? It makes me smile.

Some people don't. I've been told that many times.

I'd say Clarke hear is very hammy too. Well, in future episodes of Kai.

Clarke hears what now?
Well, in future episodes of Kai.
How is his performance any different in the later episodes? It sounds consistent to me.

I would argue that now more than ever, people look younger than previous generations looked at the same age.

I'm kind of having second thoughts on Sabat in Kai. While I do enjoy Chirs Sabat's more toned down performance I still sometimes get a "that's not Sabat as Piccolo, that's just Sabat putting on that deep voice he uses in almost everything he's in" vibe. It seems Sabat most of the time is in "deep voiced badass" mode or something similar to his actual voice, that's why I was slightly disappointed about him not reprising some of his roles since roles like his Zarbon and Jheese were well done IMO and showed that he could do more then just characters with deep "badass" or suave voices. That said I can usually look past it and enjoy Sabat's new take on Piccolo (and enjoy his replacements), though I still think it would have been interesting to see how it would have sounded if he used something along the lines of the voice he used in the UUE dub.

^I dunno. His gravely voice doesn't suit Junior. In Kai, I'd say his improved delivery and acting make it for me.

Plus, he still plays Kami. And Reccome. And even outside DBZ, he has quite the impressive range (there's an underlying tone that can tie them together but there's still a distinction).

Goku: As good as ever, not my favorite Goku but he's still awesome.

Vegeta: A lot better than the voice he used in the beginning! He's still not Brian Drummond but he's a close second. My favorite returning voice.

Piccolo: Also a lot better! I still prefer Scott McNeil but Chris Sabat is great as him now!

Trunks: Not as good as before but still good.

Android 16, Yamcha, Nail, Krillin, Recoome: I didn't think he was all that good until Kai (even then, Recoome still doesn't sound good).

Cell: Even better!

King Kai: My least favorite returning voice. He sounds just obnoxious and needs a recast NOW.

I don't know why so many seem to care about acting range or if a voice sounds like another character from another show. If the voice fits, I'm good. Sabat's deep voice fits Piccolo, especially when he lost the gravel.

Vale's Trunks is odd. He's turned the rasp up to 11 which hurts the performance a lot, but he's overall a much better actor than when he first got the role. If you listen his first performances, he has little to no rasp. If he could combine his acting experience with that voice, it would definitely be for the better. His real voice isn't all that deep, perhaps if he just pitched it up, I think it would fit.

I agree, Vale's newer take is the most complicated one to rule on. Like you said, there's no doubt he's become a much better actor since he first played the character, it's just...that rasp. I have no idea what's happened there.
