Goku's Gi

I am currently reading Vol. 25 of the Dragonball Z graphic novel from Viz.
I just read the part where Kibito takes Gohan back to Earth to fight Buu. When Kibito is trying to remember what color Goku's gi is, Gohan says it is golden yellow.

Was this a mis-translation? If not, considering DBZ has been out for a while, why didn't Viz just change it?

From what I've seen of the colored chapter pages, isn't Goku's gi initially yellowish and then a light orange, as oppossed to the reddish-orange in the anime?

There have been other times in the Manga where his Gi was called "Yellow" or something close to that, but never have I read "orange".

Why this is, I have no idea, because it looks pretty orange on all the tankobon cover art.

My mom says yamabuki is orange, but I'm guessing it's an orangeish yellow? No idea but I think it translates to mountain rose or something and I have no clue what color that would be. Gokuh's clothes are definitely more yellow in the manga though.

Anime seems to be reddish-orange, manga seems to be yellowish-orange...

'cept in SSJ forms, because then the yellow glow makes it even yellower still...

NOT red though. There's a definate!

Oddly enough, Gohan says the same thing (that Gokû's Gi is yellow) to Videl at the Tenka'ichi Budôkai. Maybe yellow and orange are considered the same color in Japanese? I think blue and green are... Maybe.

Don't worry, I've found it (It's chapter 496)

He describes it as 「山吹色」 (yamabuki-iro) which translates to "bright golden yellow". So yeah, VIZ was spot-on with their translation.

Yamabuki is a Japanese Globeflower (a variety of yellow rose), and then "iro" simply means colour. However, when you combine the two words together it just means a bright golden yellow (you wouldn't translate it as "globeflower-colour" or something).

No, from everything I've seen and read there's a definite differentiation between those colours. With the green/blue thing you might just be thinking about the traffic lights. In Japan they call the green lights blue (but then again, they might actually be blue, I have no idea...there's a good question for Julian...).

Simply put, Toriyama never gave an exact consistant color with the Gi. There were times where it was orange, then reddish orange, then yellowish orange to flat out yellow. You could see from all the color art he's done of Goku.

Well, we know how extremely consistant Toriyama is with his colourings! Some colour chapter near the end of the fight with Vegeta, Gohan's outfit is vivid green.

I think Toriyama just used what colour inks were next to him that were relatively close to previous colour chapters and said, "Oh, what the Hell! Death to consistancy!"

Pink Goku gi. Yeeeeeeeeeeaaah, ooooookayyyyyy.

That's not inconsistant...

This is the first time we see Gohan's outfit in colour, so yeah, it's green. Remember, just because they make it purple in the anime, that doesn't mean it's correct. (Let's not forget red-haired Vegeta... ^_^ ).

As for Goku's gi being pink, that's only in the red and gray scale portions of the manga. The coloured chapters are usually only done partially in full colour, and then switch to a primarily red-based inking to save time.

If you flip back a little bit in that same Kanzenban with Gohan's green outfit (volume 16), you'll see the true colour of Goku's gi on pages 48-50, and 62-64. The rest of the pages with the pink gi are technically incorrect.

Yeah which is funny because Goku's gi is still the Yellow/Orange in the Anime even when the aura is not surrounding him...anyway, from what I can see on any cover art for the Manga it's always Yellow/Orange, but I prefer the way the Anime does it.
