The whole thing was discussed in a podcast here on Kanzenshuu. The only place where it says that Gohan can't turn Super Saiyan is in a guidebook for Movie 13 (and that's just a little tibdit in the book, and it's not even definite, it's written like "perhaps he can't turn into Super Saiyan anymore?").Kakarot88 wrote:The "he can turn Super Saiyan" portion would make the most sense to me, if it is indeed intentional. I was under the impression that Gohan no longer could turn "blonde" form of Super Saiyan but could unlock that power after Elder Kai. Now my info for that does NOT come from manga or anime, as neither source ever says that Gohan no longer is able to go into the golden blonde hair Super Saiyan merely that it is unnecessary. But I have read in many places (maybe even fans on this website) say that the Daizenshuus say Gohan lacks the power once he powered up. I own Chozenshuu 1 and don't speak Japanese so it's just pretty pics for me lol so if fans who can read japanese know better then that'd be helpful info but I just have no idea and am inclined to agree that Gohan can still turn blonde becuase I have not read an official source say that he cannot.
To me Gohan still can turn into the golden haired form because the manga never said he could not only that if he powered up like that he would unlock his power and the transformation was "unnecessary" not that it was now impossible. My understanding of Dragon Ball has always been this: if they say "that blast will destroy the planet" all that means is it will blow up the planet, not that blowing up the planet is the max it is capable of...so saying Gohan can power up without transforming only means he can do that, not that he no longer can do the physical transformation where he goes blonde hair and green eyes.
However, I could be wrong as I cannot read Japanese and I am basing my info off of Viz Manga and Funimation subtitles.

Well, I have no better "proof", of course, I just thought Watanabe seemed honest about it. I read that conversation and other responses he gave on Twitter, he even answered a question of mine about the name puns and he seemed a regular guy, so I think he might have told the truth about not goofing that up.I don't really know how the movie business works but if he is just the scriptwriter, I guess he doesn't really need to be aware of marketing choices.Kakarot88 wrote:Haha I don't think I ever could "prove" that, but it just seems to be a more plausible explanation than "We did it right we kept Gohan having black hair pursuant to the manga and the ads are wrong because we don't talk to our ad department, no sir, no communication there...all the wasted hours of our ad department doing ads we never approved of including countless posters and other promotional material that money was poured into well yes that is just how you do business of course...What about the blonde Super Saiyan Gohan that is still in the movie you ask? Well uhh...ahem...the blonde hair well that does not need explanation that was on purpose too because of uhhh...
" lol
So in your opinion what is more likely? Do you think they goofed and went back and fixed it for the entire movie? OR just that they goofed on Gohan having blonde hair in that one instance when they turn Goku Super Saiyan God?
As far as Gohan's hair goes, I went with the idea he still could turn into Super Saiya-jin so it didn't strike me as odd that he turned in the God ritual but it kinda takes away from his individuality (I do like that movie 13 scene where Goku and Goten turn into Super Saiya-jin and Gohan just powers up).

Thanks for the podcast link! After listening to it, it unsurprisingly confirms what I already said and looks like we are in the same place as before lol: either they goofed and tried to fix or Gohan can do it with no explanation...YAAAAAY!VegettoEX wrote:It was Episode #0319 for those interested. So I just listened to the whole soundtrack, straight-through, for the first time recently. I must say, I was quite surprised at it; in neither a bad or good way. Some of the pieces struck me as very English dub-esque. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but I noticed a few pieces that resemble Shuki Levy and Bruce Faulconer in particular.
Anyway, of the 43 tracks, my favourites were:
- Track 3, Our Hero, Son Goku (~ “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” (Main Title))
- Track 6, Bulma’s Birthday Party
- Track 24, Vegeta Enraged- this one strikes me as kinda Yamamoto-ish. Sort of reminds me of Creature of Marvel for some reason.
- Track 30, One More Saiyan
- Track 31, Super Saiyan God is Born
- Track 38,The Eternal Universe (Budding Friendship)
- Track 40, The Eternal Universe (Parting)
- Track 42, CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA (A Peaceful Earth)
And of course, the two main songs of the feature: HERO: Song of Hope and CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA
Overall, I really enjoyed listening to the soundtrack. One or two pieces sound a little out of place but others were really cinematic and a joy to listen to. I can pretty much close my eyes and picture the scenes playing out in front of me- with the help of Kanzenshuu's brilliant summary of the film, of course. In fact, I may listen to the soundtrack again while reading along with the summary at the same time.

The film's final total from its run in Japan is $29,947,013. Oh, so close.

Surely Toei could consider the moving having reached its goal being this close...?DragonBoxZTheMovies wrote:I think it's had its final push now. I think it depends on how strict they are about it. Not reaching your goal is not reaching your goal. It depends now I think on how much Toei values what BOG could earn them internationally. DB has so many international fans who want to see the movie and could easily get it up to that goal imo.

Of course it would reach that goal. However, if it was to be released internationally, the goal would be much, much greater.Chuquita wrote:I think it depends on how strict they are about it. James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

That is so close to the goal, Toei might as well donate the difference themselves.

...unless, 3 billion was never actually the goal and was actually just said for public relations purposes because they thought they would exceed that no effort and in fact it turns out they could not even reach that making this an epic flop...I certainly hope that is not the case but the announcement of the 3 billion figure seemed like it was done in an effort to garner publicity so they could later go "3 billion ain't shit! We blew that out of the water"...given all of the advertising and dual efforts with fast food chains I hope they will see the benefit of international releases in the future, but the likelihood of such releases is highly questionable, if this movie did not do well...which it does not seem to have given the fact that not only did it receive government funding but also the backing of multiple food chains.

Japan Yearly Box Office
Rank-----------Movie Title-----------Distributor----------Gross-------------Release
1-------------------Ted----------------Toho-Towa------$43,994,113----------1/18
2---------Doraemon Himitsu...---------Toho----------$39,965,030----------3/8
3-----------Meitantei Conan...----------Toho----------$29,989,725---------4/20
4---------------Dragon Ball Z-------------Toei-----------$29,947,013---------3/30
Yeah, 4th biggest gross of the year so far. I don't see why it should be considered a flop at all. Especially when we notice all the films in that list. I mean, I'm sure that the budget for Battle of Gods wasn't that high, in fact I've read that reports point to its budget being under 1 million dollars, so making over 30 times its budget and having the 4rd biggest gross of the year so far, can't be anything other than a success.
Of course, as the year goes on, its rank will decrease but going by last year's box office, $30,000,000 will be enough to keep it in the top 20 grossing films of the entire year.
So relax, I'm pretty sure it was a success.

I had a dream Youmacon was doing multiple screenings of BoG with English subtitles. Haha I really hope FOX & Funi work together and have the movie in theaters before the end of the year.
GT isn't bad, just sucks ass in comparison to the other 2 animes.
