In video games I can't understand why they portray Yamcha and Tienshinhan as best friends. From what I remember they're
BARELY rivals. Let alone best friends. I see them more of just knowing each other just because they have the same friends. Goku and Tien and Krillin and Tien seems more friends then Yamcha and Tien. So what are they? Or did I answer my own question? I just can't gasp the idea of the video games having Tien and Yamcha best friends.

I'd say they're friends to be honest. Not the bestest of friends like the games portray but still.

Have never played the games.
However, I would say that after dying in the Saiyan arc, any wounds would have been mended by then...as well as hints of rivalry between them. Maybe even by the 23rd tournament, actually.
They were bros for sure during the cell saga.

Even in one of the recent Toriyama interviews he gives an epilogue where Yamcha occasionally stops by and helps Tenshinhan with his farm. Yamcha has more of a big brother relationship with Goku and Kuririn and Tenshinhan has the same with Chaozu. Maybe they are closer because of this and the time they spent training with Muten Roshi and Kaio. But the real is because they are both human fighters that are around but pretty much just stay in the background.

When Yamcha and Tienshinhan first meet there is an element of rivalry between the two - they clearly dislike each other. Yamcha thinks Tien is an arrogant, insufferable bully and is barely able to hold back the urge to punch him outside of the ring, whereas Tien sees Yamcha as a weakling with a loud mouth. Tien breaking his leg during the Tenkaiichi Budokai is a particular low point between the two - but by the end of the tournament there is a moment of forgiveness where the two almost garner a mutual respect of one and other.
I think that Tien isn't particularly close to anyone apart form Chiaotzu, but whilst not particularly close, the two respect each other both as martial artists and people.

I never detected any closeness between them, but they were the two human fighters who were shafted the most. But let's face it, Yamcha never had a lot going for him in the first place compared to the others. Seeing Tenshinhan lumped in with him like that is a bit bothersome to me.

Never really a big friendship between the two, but noticed both their Funimation and Japanese vas tend to play friends or at least comrades a lot in other shows.
