I can see the original DBZ dub for what it is: a fun but flawed product; the result of low budgets, rushed production schedules, questionable scriptwriting, and poor decisions made by the writers and producers.Kakarot88 wrote:So I take it all of y'all did not enjoy TOONAMI?
It's ok to like the old dub; but I think that acknowledging it's flaws and willing to listen to an improved dub or even *GASP* the original Japanese version makes you a more educated (less ignorant) fan. Hell, even as a hardcore fan of the Japanese version, I still acknowledge its flaws.

I don't think having a less compressed production schedule would've helped the dub all that much.

Maybe it could have. But the voice acting would still be mediocre.ABED wrote:I don't think having a less compressed production schedule would've helped the dub all that much.

Re: Sean Schemmel confirms Buu Saga dubbing in interview
That mainly comes down to lack of experience and having to immitate a previous cast. I think a big thing that would've helped is if they were digital. At the time everything they had was analog so doing retakes took a lot longer. Now it's almost instantaneous but back then it took a while to rewind everything. I read somewhere that they could only get a few takes on any given line before they had to move on, now they get about as many as they want.dbzfan7 wrote:Maybe it could have. Sabat has spoken many times about how glad he is that technology has improved. He once joked that, back when they started out, if they needed to rewind the tape (yes, tape) to do a re-take, he could've taken a cigarette break in the time it took to get everything set up again.ABED wrote:That mainly comes down to lack of experience and having to immitate a previous cast. Technological developments have been both a blessing and a curse in the VO/voice acting industry. On the one hand, things can get done faster, but on the other hand, now things are expected to get done faster. Sabat said that even the production schedule for the Kai dub was very fast.

Re: Sean Schemmel confirms Buu Saga dubbing in interview
I'm excited for this! Now comes the question, when do you think they will begin airing on TV? I'm guessing somewhere around September when the fall seasons usually take off.
Re: Sean Schemmel confirms Buu Saga dubbing in interview
I wouldn't say that early, not yet. Schemmel was recently "finishing up" the Buu saga. There still may be other VAs that have to record their parts, maybe another VA recording the dubbed Dragon Soul, and maybe some other finishing touches. Conservatively, I would put it sometime in early to mid winter. Maybe January. Believe me, I hope it's sooner, but at this point, all we can do is speculate. Plus, we don't have the official word from FUNi yet. I imagine that when they give the big announcement, that they will give us a date. I'd say we will at least have a release date stated by summertime. I'm excited for it, but I just don't want to get my hopes up too much, too early. We're extremely lucky to be getting it all, so I can wait as long as I have to, as long as it's reasonable.Daimo-Rukiri wrote:I'm excited for this! No doubt they'll air the new episodes on Nicktoons (Maybe Vortexx?). And as much as I'd love for it to be on Toonami, it just wouldn't get the big audience like it did on Nicktoons.

Nicktoons has a bigger audience than Cartoon Network?

We already know it won't be on Cartoon Network USA. They passed it up when FUNimation offered it to them. I doubt they'll want it now.ABED wrote:Nicktoons has a bigger audience than Cartoon Network?

Cartoon Network doesn't want good shows. If good shows show up on their programming they get cancelled because they're not crappy enough.Fennekin wrote:We already know it won't be on Cartoon Network USA. They might want it since it proved to be successful. By the way, your comment didn't answer my question.Fennekin wrote:We already know it won't be on Cartoon Network USA. Re: Sean Schemmel confirms Buu Saga dubbing in interview
Toonami wasn't around when DBZ Kai was released in the US. They're around now, though, which makes Adult Swim a possibility. I imagine they'd want the Buu saga if the rights can be obtained. If I recall correctly, DBZ was the most requested show for them to air, but when someone from Toonami last commented on DBZ Kai, they said that Nicktoons had the rights.Fennekin wrote:We already know it won't be on Cartoon Network USA. EDIT - Found a direct quote: "The rights are held by another network. We can’t air it sorry."

In fact, if you want to quickly create a popular image, simply over saturate the colors and increase the contrast. Re: Sean Schemmel confirms Buu Saga dubbing in interview
People seriously want Kai on Cartoon Network instead of Nicktoons? Really?
It would be one thing if Toonami was still airing directly afterschool but it would not get the kind of air time. Hell, even CN's Saturday morning line up would be better, but that's also incredibly unlikely. Nicktoons has treated Kai way better than CN would have.

Of course Cartoon Network USA has a bigger audience, but there's no way they'll get Z Kai now.ABED wrote:They might want it since it proved to be successful. They had the chance to have it first and chose to turn it down. Stuart Snyder, the president of Cartoon Network, obviously played a role in this since he's been changing the direction of the channel since he took over. He's the reason why the original Toonami block got dissolved.
So I highly doubt FUnimation would want to even offer it to them again, and Nicktoons would definitely want to keep the series on it's channel considering it's success on it.

Turning down Kai is like saying, "NO! WE DON'T WANT TO SUCCEED!"

This. I never understood why CN passed on Kai in the first place. I know the people who run CN nowadays want to push their original programming and "do their own thing" at the exclusion of anime; but for cripes' sake, DBZ was the highest-rated show for years. For a while, it was beating out prime-time programs such as WWF/WWE. Oh well, at least they have Adventure Time and the new episodes of One Piece, otherwise I'd drop that channel like a bad habit.penguintruth wrote:Turning down Kai is like saying, "NO! I'm glad Nicktoons/CW is doing well with Kai even if some of their edits are in WTF? territory.

Re: Sean Schemmel confirms Buu Saga dubbing in interview
Do we have any confirmation that CN turned it down, or is that an assumption? It sounds like something that could have happened, don't get me wrong, I'm just wondering if there has ever been any official comment on the situation.
Either way, as others have noted....CN's loss. A small part of me hopes they've paid attention to what they missed out on, and will be open to putting more anime on their network.
