Toys R' US manga incident

Post by Adnan » Mon Apr 24, 2006 5:40 pm

Just bumped into this old interview Mike did.

What exactly is this "manga incident" regarding Toys R' Us, just so that I can be in the loop?

Julian's probably the best one to tackle this.

As far as I remember, some kid picked up the comic book edition of the first Dragon Ball chapters from Toys R Us, his mom saw Bulma offering Goku to feel her rear for his Dragon Ball, she flipped and demanded the manga be removed from the store.

Not only did Toys R Us remove them, Viz went and began editing its manga, to which TONS of fans replied to in a petition since that was the only form of uncensored Dragon Ball in English at the time. Viz gave in and rereleased the previous ones unedited and returned to doing so for abit, while placing "For Ages 13+" tags on the covers.

Anyone who wants to correct me on this, feel free to.

This part made me laugh, though:
A: I believe that MrE at Planet Namek has been great in offering some of us the space we need to continue our sites. I don't see him as taking over the DB/net community (that's my job... oh crap, did I say that out loud? I HAVE NO PLANS TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD! I SWEAR!). The maintainers of the sites in question have just had enough of the DB-website thing, and I can't really blame them. Rather than have their material go into obsolescence and be stolen by legions of website newbies, I think it's great that they'll continue to live on, albeit from a different host.
Funny thing is that this is just about one of the few sites that's been around for years while still staying strong and is one of the more well known Dragon Ball fansites around.

So what happened later that made Viz decide to return to only producing edited versions?

Probably lack of caring or because more younger kids are reading since they started primarily doing this around the time of Shonen Jump's American release.

It's Parental Code 472: Should your child do something wrong, blame another source rather than yourself.

DAMN STRAIGHT!!! I cannot stand all this censoring on things, esspecially in Manga, I mean Anime is one thing because it's harder to control what your kids WATCH, but it's very simply to prevent them from reading Manga with nudity or gore...DO NOT LET THEM BUY IT!!! It's not like parents don't know what their kids are buying at younger ages.

With V-Chips and Parental Settings allowing you to control what your set can play and with remotes having a Channel + and - button as well as a Power button, I don't see how it's so hard. o_O Parents just need to observe their kids more, rather than have the TV babysit.

Old interviews are interesting to read. Primarily because of the stuff on Funimation from the time this was taken to now. I also never knew about this Toys R Us incident and that was why they started to censor the manga.

I believe the reason they re-returned to censoring it was indeed the fact that they placed dbz in Viz's version of Shounen Jump where the age group was broader and included little kids.
On hiatus.

Funny thing is that Dragon Ball's rating is actually higher than Dragon Ball Z's. o_O

All parents out there: It's called "parenting" for a reason!!!

I'd say a bunch of stuff towards Viz right now, but I'm not so angry today  and they do a pretty good job with the rest of their manga that hasn't been intentionally aimed at children in the US (cough... Yu-Gi-Oh! and it's whole (*&@#&*&^ for swearing).

I just got all nine of the released Naruto manga. I'm near the end of volume 2 and so far I'm really enjoying it. I'm going to keep collecting it as new volumes are released and I'm starting to work on getting all of the Dragonball and DBZ manga too.

Sorry, but pretty much everything you see in the US Shonen Jump is just about aimed at kids, no matter how you look at it. Japan simply has different standards, where as kids in the US are mostly sheltered from reality.

Jerseymilk, that strip was great. XD

Yeah but some TV shows with the same ratings are different than others, why hell when DBZ Uncut aired here it was rated PG & it had I believe 2 occasions with a flipping off.

Basically the Cartoon Network staff don't know anything about DragonBall Z. I mean if they did know about the 2 occassions of finger flipping, wouldn't you think that they would have made it TV-14, or at least TV-PG V? Although they did advertsie everyday, that it was going to be uncut, "the way it was meant to be seen."

Uh, as I said. Japan's standards are different from ours. What's petty to them causes outcries from soccer moms in the US. >_>

I understand that, but I am saying it's strange that those DBZ eps were rated only a PG....also I bought a Lupin The III Movie from FUNi & it was rated PG yet it showed Fujiko's breasts.

Regular nudity is pretty much just that. Especially animated nudity. S'not like she was boinking anyone. o_O;
