Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ: "Rock the Dragon" Set

I'm wondering if this set is related to Kai after all. Like, if they didn't want to use the Kai name to avoid confusion, and maybe it was rescheduled because the dub isn't ready yet? I guess all we can do at this point is speculate.

But why would they list the DVD to begin with if the dub wasn't ready?

Bad news guys (I wanted to report this yesterday but the site was down.). The DVD was not listed on FUNimation's July DVD schedule, which means it was either delayed or cancelled.

That's ok. As much as I'd like to get these I am glad that they are delayed or cancelled (if they are) before they released the first volume and then not release the second half.

That's unlikely because the episodes shown on the cover are 26/29 which for Z are the Saiyan's arc, and in Kai's Freeza arc.

Good. If this was a real thing that got cancelled, that's awesome. If FUNimation was seriously considering releasing this, that would probably be the dumbest decision they've ever made.

"Hurrr, let's release an old, out dated dub. Surely fans will buy that." Like, why would anyone think that and possibly believe it was a good idea? There's so much better things they could have released. Why would you even want an un-finished and edited to HFIL dub anyways?

So what if it's old? It's so old it's now retro, and there are many positives to that dub. We live in an era of niche marketing. There's a market for nostalgia. Why just let that dub degrade in some vault and not monetize it?

I don't understand this line of reasoning. Releasing this doesn't preclude them from releasing something else.

Again, I ask - DUMBEST? in the long history of dumb decisions by funimation, how does this rank as one of them? What about cropping DBZ?

I personally don't think a DVD release of this could be justified.....but on the other hand......a digital streaming-only release, I view that as much more practical. Videos on YouTube of the Ocean dub have tons of views, so FUNimation might as well monetize those and help the industry.

This guy gets it. Why doesn't FUNi just release more Dragon Boxes or some other type of quality release? The thought that they would release this is astoundingly stupid. I'm talking Superior Spider-Man levels of stupid. Like, I don't see how a release like this would sell, even to a niche audience. Better video quality? With bad masters? Like, wow, that can't be a positive. It would really be a waste of money and resources for FUNimation.

Why not just have the quality release instead of doing a concurrent run? Also, why release something with corny dialog, laughable 90s voice acting that's not even their own actors, edits that would make 4Kids laugh, and just overall something that not a lot of people would even buy. There is no reason this release should have even been a thought in FUNimation executive's minds.

Because there are those of us that like the Ocean dub, and some who would like to see it but haven't. That dub is leagues better than season 3 in terms of both acting and even dialog. What is 90s voice acting and what makes it worse than today's?

Again, how is this even remotely FUNi's WORST decision? You make some good points, which I'm sure they've taken into consideration, however to say it's arguably the dumbest decision they've ever made is such a stretch when you consider the overall crappiness of DBZ's dub scripts. It don't get much dumber than "mondo cool!" Talk about out of date. Who was that supposed to appeal to?

I already gave you a few reasons why a release like this might be a good decision - there could be a market, albeit limited for it, and why have something sit on the shelf gathering dust when you can make money off of it?

I hope this is only delayed and not cancelled, I would have liked to have had this dub with better picture quality. I don't understand how people can begrudge this be released. It's not Funimation's future for the series and is only cashing in on an old product that's targeted as a niche add-on not as a replacement.

Simple solution: If you didn't like the dub, don't buy it. But don't get upset at the people who would actually like this.

I for one would definitely order this DBZ Ocean Dub Saiyan arc set if it were real because I don't see myself buying the old ones which are bulky, mostly available only used for reasonable prices and I just prefer it to be in a smaller set.

Fingers crossed that this ends up being legit, but Amazon so far nothing.
