Do you feel that The CW has butchered DBZKai?

Post by Cure Dragon 255 » Sat Mar 23, 2013 11:46 pm

I think they didnt. To call it a butchery, they would have to merge episodes, change the music and so on. They even kept Freeza Impaling Krillin!

Personally, I think "butcher" is probably too harsh a term in this specific instance, because I very rarely (if ever) use that term to refer to overzealous visual censorship. "Butcher" is a term that I normally use to describe an anime's dub script that has been too liberally-translated. It's even easier for me to be...umm, easy...on the CW's censorship policies because an uncut version (and even a less-edited version, counting Nicktoons) is readily available.

I never have seen it. How bad was it? I'm sure the Popo thing was rather obnoxious, but it seems like you could actually pass the series by for the most part with only a few violence edits. It's not like Bulma's breasts come flying out ever 5 episodes in Z.

Can't be worse then the Z dub.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Yeah, it's really "script change edits" that bother me, I understand that as far as visual edits are concerned, a lot of that is mandated by TV networks. Having said that, the over-zealousness with which some visual elements were edited on the CW dub are, at times, comical. When Chaotzu exploded, they added.....sparkles........like little glittering sparkle-lights.

The ultimate example in my mind, however, was an edit they performed on Freeza in the episode when he's trying to cut Goku with those two energy discs. In between his legs, there's a little.....I don't know what to call it, a....I guess a "notch," that was painted over so that the area between his two legs was pure white. It would appear that somebody over at the CW's editing department thought that notch was, well....genitals.

That edit had me in stitches laughing. Who out there is seriously that easily offended?

Perfect Cell's little crotch/ass gem is now green. I guess CW figured kids would be like "Hey mommy, what's that?".

That shit just sounds hilarious, actually. I'm not offended by this at all - not like TV broadcast matters to me anyway.

I'd love to see this. Or is there an episode streaming site where we can see it? Like, on the official Vortex website or something.

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

Well, I'm having trouble finding pics/videos like that of Cell, but here's a video of "Genderless Freeza," for those interested.

I mean, I can only speak for myself, but growing up, I and those around me never thought twice about Freeza's genitals (did I seriously just type that?) and never once would have thought that any design on his body could possibly be misconstrued for anything remotely inappropriate for children. Which, again, is why I ask...how easily offended are the people who mandate such edits? It had me laughing so hard just because I had this image in my head of how the CW decided to edit it. Like there's this guy watching the episodes, looking for things that might need to be edited, and he's like...

"Mhmmm......okay, good, good.....goo--WHOA, genitals! Genitals, that's definitely genitalia!"
*calls the digital editing suite*
"Hello? Okay, I've got a few for you today. First off, at the 01;16;29;03 mark, you can clearly start to see genitalia between that alien's legs......wha--YES, I'm SURE! I know one when I see it!"

Heh...I guess the way I phrased that implies that we thought about it all, which we didn't.

Okay, well, we did--in one way--loosely. When I was a kid, I lost count of how many times this phrase came up in conversations with my friends when we were discussing that day's episode: "And then Freeza went and she--he, sorry--"

Even if it's true, it's not a problem since we have easy access to a better version.

Honestly, the version that airs in syndication is for kids. Yes, it's unfortunate that it's edited, but honestly, I doubt the kids watching it are noticing. And having caught many episodes on my DVR from this version, It's still much easier for me to stomach visual edits with small dialog changes, than no visual edits but huge dialog changes. Example, the original 270 edited run of DBZ in America. ZKai, even edited, is VASTLY superior to what we were given as kids.

And we finally meet face to face!

http://www.sabanbrands.com/staff/phylli ... n-jackson/

I think she's pretty cool. I know she censors LOTS of stuff, but we have to understand where she stands, this is a PRETTY hard job. She stands between two factions, the ones who want the shows to be "awesome" as in "full of action and excitement" and those who want the shows to be as calm, boring and non-controversial as possible. But I think she is pretty understanding of what Vortexx wants to acomplish as a block and lets lots of stuff be. Because EVERYTHING must be approved by BS&P to air on the Vortexx.
