Rainy moments in the story (all media)

Post by Cold Skin » Sun May 26, 2013 4:12 pm

It is no secret that Toriyama's favorite weather is that of a pretty clear sky (albeit with a few clouds here and there), but rain still strikes me as something so rare that I can't help feeling that I don't know about (or don't remember) some rainy moments.

As far as I remember, in the manga, the only moment showing rain in the whole story is when Goku first shows up as a grown-up (a convenient way to have him hide his hair for a few minutes).

And in the anime, all that I can remember are:
- the same moment than in the manga, with the first appearance of grown-up Goku.
- Trunks discovering Future Gohan's dead body.
- Vegeta being angry during the android saga, promising that he will make a striking comeback at the top position.
- I think I remember an ending showing Bulma looking at the rain from inside a house through the window, but I might confuse it with a video game...

Are rainy moments that rare in the Dragon Ball franchise or am I missing some of them (including everything, series, movies, GT...)?

That'd be the first ending for Dragon Ball.
During GT we have a few rainy scenes on Planet Imecka.

In DB, just when Goku and Giran's match was supposed to start in the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, resulting in the match being postponed.

Also, in GT when SSJ4 Goku and Ozaru Baby were both knocked out and Bulma used the Bruits Wave amplifier (or whatever it's called) to revive Baby.

When Goku tells others that Majunior is Piccolo in the anime.

Got some more...

Beginning of Z episode 10, when Gohan is gathering food.

The end of Z episode 15, when Gohan is out at sea, trying to get home.

The beginning of Z episode 108, the beginning of the dreaded Garlic Jr arc.

Near the end of GT episode 50, when a downpour caused Wu Xing Long's electrical jelly monster to short out and explode.

Whoa, there are even more than I imagined!

It's interesting how in the anime version, it is shown that a Tenkaichi Budokai match won't happen if it's raining, and will be postponed because of the weather.
Perhaps this is linked to the sudden rain when Goku tells the others about Piccolo's true identity as mentionned by Kei, maybe as an excuse for why he has time to explain before the final battle starts.
It has been shown before that the finale usually happens without even a one-minute break, though the announcer does ask Goku if he would like to have one at one of the previous Tenkaichi Budokai, which implies it's actually possible to have a few minutes before proceeding to the finale... But maybe the anime staff still felt more confortable with having the rain to justify that Goku has time to chat, or perhaps it's simply to set the mood for his revelation that the stakes are way higher than everyone thought for this finale.

The rainy first DB ending initially gave me vicarious nostalgia, which later gave way a few years later to the authentic variety.

Toriyama uses rain the same way Se7en did, just the other way around.

There's another rainy moment in the driving episode when Goku and Piccolo save those kids on a bus falling off a cliff.

Oh, and there's Z episode 252 right after Buu's eating fest (y'know, the segment where the animation is drastically different from the rest of the episode).

If I'm not mistaken, it was raining when Piccolo Daimaoh defeated Goku in their first fight, but only in the manga.
Sorry, I can't speak English very well, but I'm trying my best.

Nope, I just checked and it's a beautiful weather! 8)
Maybe you rather mean that it's "only in the anime"? :)

Wow i was thinking of this days ago, "how many times did it rain in the manga?" I know it rained a few times in the anime but what about the manga? vol.17-42 in particular. I don't think it rained once in those volumes but, I haven't read through in a while now.

As far as I remember, zero times from Tankobon 17 to 42!
The one and only time it rains in the whole manga seems to be when grown-up Goku first shows up, and only for a few panels.

In doubt, I even checked Alternative Future Gohan's death, but no, rain is very rare in the manga version of the Dragon World! :)

It rained when Goku was training with Karin... though, I'm not sure if it rained the first time he was up there or when he drank the holy water. Please, can someone confirm when it happened. But it did rain or at the very least cloud over and become somewhat stormy during an interaction on Karin tower.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

IIRC, that was when Karin tells Goku that Kamesen'nin took three years to grab Chouseisui from him.
