If Viz keeps printing these as a 3 in 1 won't there be fewer books meaning some of the kanzenban covers won't be used? I didn't think the kanzenbans were 3 in 1.

That's right, the Kanzenban had 34 volumes/books. These 3-in-1s should only have 14 books.

Yeah, basically we're only getting some of the Kanzenban covers. It's probably a gesture on VIZ's part to attract fans like ourselves to the books, and I'm sure it's easier for them to just choose from a pool of Kanzenban coers than it is to make their own. :P

There's a review of the product on Amazon.com already:
Rate: 1/5

This re-re-release is a horrible product and should be skipped. Even though this book uses the cover of the first kanzenban (or "perfect edition") cover of the manga, it is a much more shabby product. The back of the book claims to be uncut and remastered. Neither of which are true. The pages are printed on highly thin, low quality paper, almost like toilet paper. You can see right through the pages. The uncut claim is false; a few pages are indeed edited. The color pages are no longer in color, just plain ol' black-and-white. You're better off buying the VIZBig editions of the manga. Even though they have their flaws, (missing color pages, still censored), they do have most of the color pages and are a higher quality paper (and around the same price too!) So, skip this release, go for the VIZBigs or just wait it out until VIZ actually releases a proper version.

For more information, visit the topic in the Kanzenshuu.com forum: http://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtop ... &start=268
Then there's review on Amazon.co.uk which the reviewer is sort of new to Dragon Ball:
Rate: 4/5
I don't mind the quality of the paper it is like the other Viz 3-in-1's but for the price I still like it a lot and will get the rest as they come out. I'll guess that the viz big have Supaaaaaa quality but it's also a space thing the three in ones take up the space of just two regular manga volumes. The Artwork transfer well tho some of the greyscale colour pages can be a bit muddy but you get that with most manga. over all recommended if you don't already own dragonball which I didn't.

(*as i wrote this it was resonable priced**)
(*incase it becomes more exspensive)
If Viz does end up releasing a proper version I'll buy it though I'll need some kind of a confirmation, because I won't buy it blindly.

Having flipped through one of these earlier today, I can definitely say the paper quality really is horrible. It's thinner than newspaper, difficult to flip pages, and the fact that you can see through each page due to how thin it is really is a shame. :(

About Viz reprinting these without the edits though; I remember ages ago when they accidentally put volume #17's spine on volume #16's first print (they even offered a free replacement for this via their website--I sent away for it; got to keep the misprint and the replacement and the replacement also arrived with a bonus DB/Z bookmark; no clue if they'd offer something like that for this now though, it was a different time) it took them two months. The original's says June of that year and the replacement says August.
On hiatus.

I know this is off-topic, so I'm sorry, but are these One Piece 3-in-1's (http://www.amazon.co.uk/One-Piece-East- ... ece+3+in+1) the same crappy paper quality as the new DBZ 3-in-1's? If so, what editions do you recommend?

Again, sorry for being off-topic. I will be more productive in the future, I promise.

Its not that bad, honestly. Its just like the regular edition's paper, only a tad thinner. On the other day I had on my hand Fullmetal Alchemist vol 6 regular edition and Fullmetal Alchemist 3-in-1 edition collecting vols 4, 5 and 6. The paper on the two editions, directly comparing the same page, was essentially the same, the only difference was that the paper of the 3-in-1 edition was a tad more thin and a tad more transparent. It was very noticeable, but it wasn't horribly inferior to the regular edition. In fact, before this direct comparison, I thought it was worse. I know think its pretty acceptable for a cheap edition.

The problem is that One Piece is still on going, unlike Dragon Ball. That means that the 3-in-1 edition will take YEARS before it reaches the current volume of the individual volumes and by then the individual volumes will be far ahead. Its like that because its not in Viz's interest to have the 3-in-1 edition competing with recently released individual volumes. Viz just wants to promote the sales of older volumes. So, if you actually don't want to spend years playing catch up to the individual volumes, I would recommend the individual volumes.

Besides that, 3-in-1 edition is a tad inferior in quality but is cheaper. The individual volumes are more expensive but they have a tad more quality.

Finally got a chance to take a look in real life at the local Barnes & Noble. The book felt like it could melt in my hands! Even with this many pages it was super flimsy. Not only was the paper crazy thin, but it seemed like the printing was pretty poor as well. I saw a lot of "cloudy" blacks, compared to the One Piece 3-in-1, which also had thin paper but the blacks looked a lot more solid. Yeah, this is not the release for me it seems. Too bad.

Sorry for double posting and bringing this somewhat dead topic back to the front page, but does anyone else think that some kind of online petition would be helpful in trying to get a full 34 kanzenban release?

Sure a passionate few writing email and letters may get some attention, but something someone can easily sign online will get more looks and voices behind it. Plus it would be easier for other sites to pick up and do stories on. Now normally I shrug off online petitions but it seemed to work in the past http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/216.html

What do you guys think? Should I waste my time writing one up and trying to get it in front of as many eyes as I can?(Reddit, Facebook, message boards) Or has Viz become too big of a publishing giant with many more cash cows in it's lap to care?

Doesn't hurt to try. As long as it's direct, clear and well written, I have no problems signing up and trying to promote it. I would spend any money on a true kanzenban release and I'm sure many others would too. Would be great to make that clear too.

Well, it's something people want and isn't asking for anything too far fetched... I say try it. Who knows? I know there's a ton of people here that would sign it.

So, in other words, Viz still can't get this series right, after more than a decade.

Huge shock there.

This is what I have typed up so far. Let me know of any changes that should be made.

In the past VIZ Media, LLC has release many versions of the Dragon Ball
manga by Akira Toriyama. Including their graphic novel run from 2003
that concluded in 2006, the Viz Big run from 2008, and their recent 3-in-1
editions. Of their many version, VIZ Media, LLC have yet to release a
true uncut, high quality version of this historic manga.

We the fans have had to endure censorships imposed on this world-wide
best selling manga. These edits including, but are not limited to gun usage
by characters, middle fingers, cigarettes, nudity, and lip color. We
would like all content left intact, as printed in the Japanese editions.

These kanzenban re-releases should be of the highest quality and should
mirror the Japanese releases. High quality paper is a must. While
turning pages, there should not be any fear in the readers mind that
the pages will tear the pages.

Past incarnations have included some, but not all, color artwork. These
perfect releases should include all color pages from the original Weekly Shonen
Jump run. It is important that this classic series be released
with every single color page.

Viz Media we the fans ask you to bring the best treatment possible to a
series that has been, and still is, enjoyed by millions of fans around
the world. Please re-release Dragon Ball in a collection of 34 high
quality, truly uncut kanzenban volumes. Including the slightly
rewritten ending, correct covers, and color artwork from its Weekly
Shōnen Jump run.

The only thing that worries me about asking for this is that they just announced this - https://twitter.com/VIZMedia/status/353963207423041537
Whilst that doesn't entail whether it's just the Z portion or not, I fear that this is going to be their biggest focus right now and that we may have missed the opportunity.
