I wish people would stop saying this, it's not about nostalgia for everyone. I actually prefer the Ocean dub over anything that Funimation has done, that is why i will get it, it's got nothing to do with nostalgia.Daimakku wrote:Just found out about this release.
Are there really that many Ocean Dub nostalgia fans that would get this? I'd imagine FUNi already covered the Toonami audience with the orange bricks and the hardcore japanese fans with the Dragonboxes.. I don't see a big audience for this one. Especially when it's not even the complete series and it's edited.
I don't know what they're gonna do after this. When they gotta release the edited Ocean Dub version of the show aimed strictly at nostalgia fans, you know they're running out of niches.

For anyone curious about this new set, I tweeted Zac Bertschy a question about it, since an upcoming ANNCast will feature industry guests from FUNimation. I'd recommend anyone else with specific questions Tweet him too.

I agree and disagree. even though I already have the older releases, I'll still end up getting this because it's another one of those Dragonball thingsScott wrote:I wish people would stop saying this, it's not about nostalgia for everyone. Also will the censoring be removed?
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Probably not as they're leaving it intact, I guess. Probably the best way to go for, or they'd need to add Japanese audio + English subs, or FUNimation English voices for the missing censored parts. No one wants the FUNimation English voices in this (Schemmel, Sabat, etc).samuraix123 wrote:Also will the censoring be removed?

Knowing FUNimation, I expect this to last as long as the Dragon Boxes. I plan on picking this up as soon as it hits the shelf.

How long were each of the boxes available? 8/13 is the release date, so I'm sure X-Mas would be a good time to get it.Fennekin wrote:Knowing FUNimation, I expect this to last as long as the Dragon Boxes. I plan on picking this up as soon as it hits the shelf.

I want to see a trailer for this. I'm curious as to what that would look like.
"DBZ as it was certainly never meant to be seen! Now finally again on DVD!"
Followed by a techno beat over a montage of DBZ clips, ending with the "classic" scouter-crushing scene with Drummond.
Finally, "YOU SHOULD BE WATCHING."

Because it'd either be that or go through the trouble of bringing back whatever actors they can from the Ocean Studios and soundalikes for the many who they can't get back.samuraix123 wrote:Why would they add the Funimation voices for the missing parts?

Or they would just leave it alone entirely... which I thought was the point of this release. Original broadcast version. The way you remember it. All that stuff. It seems rather silly to me to hope that they change stuff for this.

Yeah, clearly it's going to be a rerelease of what we got before. At most, the footage might look slightly better.

Even with the original voice actors an Ocean Dub Uncut would still be inconsistent because the voices for the uncensored parts are brand new so it would differentiate from the past acting.KingofWisdom wrote:Because it'd either be that or go through the trouble of bringing back whatever actors they can from the Ocean Studios and soundalikes for the many who they can't get back.samuraix123 wrote:Why would they add the Funimation voices for the missing parts?

Sometimes I wonder about you guys and your theories. They're just going to drop the original edited 53 episodes onto DVD, nothing more. This is probably profitable for them strictly because it's such a low cost/overhead release. Dump masteres onto DVD, make nice packaging, make a little booklet, done.
One thing to actually ask about is if the boxset will include both the TV version and the uncut version of Tree of Might. And if it has that, if they'll have the NEPs/etc. (Reminds me, I need to record those for you guys at some point.)

Re: Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ in July
I believe someone posted a source earlier in the thread saying it has the recaps and previews.
It's also heavily implied it's just the home release movie 3. It says 53 episodes and 3 movies. If the TV version was there, it would be 56 episodes and 3 movies.
EDIT: Oh, you mean the recap/NEPs for the 3rd movie! Sorry.

Yeah, well, I'm one of the unlucky ones that didn't get the Ocean Dub back when it was released. I only have the Dead Zone on VHS... and yeah, it is VHS! I need this.Ashura wrote:Sometimes I wonder about you guys and your theories. They're just going to drop the original edited 53 episodes onto DVD, nothing more. I don't support downloading it as I support the Ocean dub! Makes sense for me to get this release.

Haha, I'm not sure what this has to do with my comment? I'm not condemning the release in the slightest in my post; I'm way happy they're putting it out in fact. The current DVDs which exist right now are pretty bad and I'm sure the quality on these will be a lot nicer.
I'm just saying that it's primarily coming out because it's very easy for them to produce and make some profit off of it.
Also, masteres? What the hell is going on with my fingers.

One of the reasons I'd like someone to ask is so maybe we can get them to throw both versions of that onto the DVD, because, yeah, it's pretty obvious they're probably not there currently. If for no other reason than they probably don't remember it exists. I like the TV version of the dub more, though, because the acting is in my opinion better.Gaffer Tape wrote:It's also heavily implied it's just the home release movie 3. To each his own, but for me, even if the acting was somewhat better, it's negated by the butchered scripts.Ashura wrote:I like the TV version of the dub more, though, because the acting is in my opinion better.
Though, I am more nostalgic for the TV version, and it would make me more likely to pick this up. Even though it has all of the previews, I can't see myself spending $60 when I only need to spend $15 to get the last few single DVDs I need.
