What Ocean did with their time?
Well, the dubs for Death Note and Black Lagoon, two of the greatest anime English dubs of all time, is what.
The only Funimation dub that measures up to those two is Baccano!. Maybe Summer Wars.

Oh, I loved Death Note's dub, I meant to say what they could do with Dragon Ball. I was referring to both of them having done Z back in the day then going to a more modern Kai. I suppose it all goes down to who voices Goku (if your main character doesn't work, it's going to hurt a lot more than if Freeza Soldier A and Appule aren't your best casting choices).penguintruth wrote:What Ocean did with their time?

As for Funi, looking forward to seeing how the new Lupin the 3rd series turns out. If it's half as good as it looks (with a matching dub), it might go up there.

Well, Ocean hasn't handled DBZ in a long time, so I'm not sure how they'd do.
But given how long they're taking to produce their own dub of Kai, my interest is almost zero now.
Not sure how to feel about Funi's upcoming Lupin dub. I never liked their Lupin dubs. At least they got Michelle Ruff as Fujiko.

And oddly enough, Richard Epcar as Zenigata:penguintruth wrote:Well, Ocean hasn't handled DBZ in a long time, so I'm not sure how they'd do.

Lupin III: Part II - Daisuke Jigen
Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine - Koichi Zenigata
The Castle of Cagliostro - Goemon Ishikawa XIII (Manga version)
All Richard Epcar needs is to play Fujiko and Lupin, and he'll win voice actor bingo.
Still, I like both of them, so that's good (though I would have preferred the full Red Jacket dub cast, I'll see how it goes).
As for Ocean Kai, I almost fear that they'll start releasing it after Funi finishes dubbing Buu Saga Kai, Battle of Gods, Yo! Son Goku and Friends Return, Episode of Bardock, Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans (and Super Saiyans), and those PSA vids from the 80s, plus Goku's appearance in that one Dr. Slump anime.
As for this set itself...Dunno if I can spot the $60 for it. I'm already looking for $150 to buy that fully subbed and remastered Kamen Rider V3 DVD box set, and that looks to be far more interesting in my mind (with the Dragon Boxes and Kai, my interest is mostly sated on DBZ...it'd be nice for a novelty/random urge viewing though).

Honestly I do think Funi beats Ocean in everything except the first 3 movies, even then they're not far behind. Heck, I actually think I might prefer Funi's version of Movie 3.

Didn't they use a very similar script to the TV dub with the Ocean cast? I.E., a very bad script.ringworm128 wrote:Honestly I do think Funi beats Ocean in everything except the first 3 movies, even then they're not far behind. Heck, I actually think I might prefer Funi's version of Movie 3.

You can dislike a voice or performance all you want but when you start acting like they're some kind of lesser person for it you've gone too far. I hope you don't have kids, "Daddy did you think I did good at the school play?" "You're acting was wooden and you didn't fit the part of Snow White at all. I came to that play to be entertained! You are the worst daughter ever!" It's like when I saw some guy saying Coleen Clinkenbeard was a slut because he didn't like her Gohan.penguintruth wrote:I have no interest in whether they are "good people" or not. I'm not watching the show hoping a "good person" voices a character, I want the person who voices a character to be talented. What they do in their personal lives is irrelevant. They're either good at what they do and thus have value to me or they aren't and so they don't. This isn't a charity, their job is to entertain.

With the "Rock the Dragon" theme, does anyone else wish they had kept that as a theme, but updating it a la the Sailor Moon S intro? Like the Faulconer music, but not the intro theme.

No. But I'm fully expecting that to be the theme of the Ocean cast's Kai dub.

Re: Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ in July
I think they would discredit themselves by using "Rock the Dragon" as the theme for their Kai dub.
Apples and oranges. I'm into anime to be entertained. If I were raising a child it would be a completely different situation altogether. Obviously dealing with a small child in a school play and grown so-called professionals are two entirely different things. You expect a professional to not be terrible.ringworm128 wrote:You can dislike a voice or performance all you want but when you start acting like they're some kind of lesser person for it you've gone too far. Speaking of Ocean dub, what did you guys think of Andrea Libman as little Chi-Chi and Penny from Curse of the Blood Rubies? Think she could reprise in a Ocean Kai, now that she's grown up?

Re: Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ in July
So, I was doing some digging to see what version of Tree of Might this set might have. I knew there was a different script for the TV so I figure I'd just spot check the audio they used in the trailer and see what I come up with. It turns out, they used the TV version in this trailer.
In the Uncut\DVD version the Dragon says: "And so I bid you farewell".
In the TV version and in this trailer he says: "The Eternal Dragon has spoken, farewell".
So there you have it. Combine this info with that "never before released" line from the trailer, and it looks like we're probably gonna end up getting the TV version of Tree of Might.
Thanks to Thomas Armstrong (@imatu777) for the help!

Wait so does that mean we WON'T be getting the uncut movies? Well there goes a large chunk of my interest for this.

But there aren't really seperate dubs of the first two films [with the Ocean cast] like there is with film three. Films one and two had the DVD version air, with minor edits for content. The update mainly just comments on Tree of Might appearing to be the TV dub.Craddle wrote:Didn't VegettoEX already verify we would be getting all 3 edited for TV versions of the 3 movies a few hours ago when he posted the info on the main site?

There could be a possibility of both the Uncut and the TV version of Tree of Might being in the set, but I'm probably getting my hopes up way too much.KingofWisdom wrote:But there aren't really edited versions of the first two films with the Ocean cast, aside from the TV airing that had minor edits for content. Re: Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ in July
I sort of agree with you on this actually. I think Kelamis is overrated. Sure he has the Nozawa-like scream going for him at times but there are also a lot of times when he sounds like he's trying way too hard with the screams. Especially in the Westwood dub. There were just way too many scenes like this oneABED wrote:He wasn't natural in the slightest. It's like we're saw two completely different shows. Just chalk it up to a difference of opinion.penguintruth wrote:Way more natural than overly grainy, uncomfortable-sounding Sean Schemmel. And with more playful zest than his sad, empty Ian Corlett impression.ABED wrote: No, I just think Kelamis sounded really awful and the cadence of his delivery was unnatural.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIXlAbyuPLw
The guy often sounded constipated as Goku. Even on episodes when Goku was on the sidelines he sounded like he was in horrific pain at times like when he was waiting for Vegeta and Trunks to emerge from the Time Chamber. I remember as a kid when watching re-runs of the Namek saga I'd always get annoyed at the switch from Corlett to Kelamis. His first scene was the one in the middle of the spaceship training and right off the bat he'd be doing that forced sounding constipated scream and whenever it got to that point I'd always think "Oh well guess it's time for constipated Goku again".
And people mention how he brings out Goku's spirit and all that like when he says to Recoome "Sorry. I saw an opening that just seemed to scream out attack so I did". I actually thought that line sounded kind of fake and unnatural sounding. During the Westwood dub he got so bad I was actually relieved when Kirby Morrow took over.
