Pros and Cons on the Korean Dub(s) of Dbz

Post by TheGmGoken » Sun Jun 09, 2013 9:09 pm

I'm going by Champ dub and the Tooniverse dub as that's the only two I saw. I THINK there a 3rd one but it's not as popular as these two and from asking around not many people remember it OR it didn't exist. What's your opinion on the Korean Dubs of Dbz? Voices wise I'll go for Champ all day. Even through most of the voices are the same but the voices that don't are MUCH MUCH better in the Champ dub. Champ copied the original voice for Gohan(Kid and Adult/Teen) and Goten very well. They sound just like Masako(Mis spell her name). The Freeza....while much better then Linda Young's is still wrong. It's a female. Nothing wrong with females but it just didn't fit the character. Dende in tooniverse was great. Compare Champ dub Gohan(Adult) to Toooniverse Gohan(Adult) you'll see why I'm praising Champ more.

Buu sounds like a retard when he's in his pure form. Which is expected.

*edit* Btw you don't have to see every episode or a-lot of eps. If all you seen if clips then that;s good as well

Didn't know there were two, and don't know Korean, so never cared, but are these the same ones that censor Yajirobe's shoes and Roshi's house's name?

There are 3 if I'm correct but I can't remember the name of that one. It had to do with Cbs? No it started with a S. It got cancelled I think.

Tooniverse is Uncut
Champ is like Toonami DBz. Uncut and edited at the same time. So I'll say 90% uncut. At the time Japan and South Korea was still having issues that was being resolved so edits about anything Jap happen in the dub.

Goku and Vegeta's voice actors are the same in the Champ and Tooniverse dubs. I guess you're mixing that with the SBS dub, in which Goku's actor from the Champ/Tooniverse dub voiced Vegeta. The R2 Dragon Box vol.1 has a clip of the SBS dub as an extra.

There it is. SBS. Yeah I mixed them up. But yea Toovierse > Champ. They're similar but some voices are differ. Adult Gohan in Toonverse dub has a more high pitch voice matching the original. Champ got a deep voice. They're some other differ voice actor but most of them are same.

It's exactly the opposite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siA2OMLXqHU
They're some other differ voice actor but most of them are same.
Actually, most of the characters except for some main characters got recast.

You said the same thing I said. Just worded differ. I said MOST are the same. Then I said some are differ. Damn it. I'm getting my dubs confused :(. This is what happens when I watch both dubs around the same time lol. But here this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVtOmZAhYNU. It's tooniverse but the Gohan voice had a similar voice to the Champ dub. Unless for that one scene it was the same.

Just wondering, WHY were these dubs made if they were all in the same language, and all used similar casts? o.O

From what I heard, there're some issues of broadcast rights. Tooniverse airs the Champ dub until the end of the Freeza arc, but they switch to their own dub from the Garlic Jr. arc. Other satellite channels like Anibox and Anione air the Champ dub throughout the entire series. As for the SBS dub, they newly dubbed the show rather than to licence the Champ dub because terrestrial TV channels in South Korea usually dub foreign shows by themselves just like the Japanese TV channels. For example, in Japan, there are three different dubs of the old TMNT series just because of broadcast rights fees. Dubbing shows/films yourself can be cheaper than licencing other channels' dubs.
