Thoughts on Colors

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Thoughts on Colors

Post by Deus ex Machina » Sat Mar 06, 2004 10:38 pm

After browsing through the awesome Kanzenban cover and back art, I started wondering about the differences between Toriyama's art, and the anime.

Of course the manga's were all (mostly) in black & white, and since Toriyama had no involvement with the creation of the anime, it probably means that the Toei staff had to decide what, and who, was which color.

That's not a big deal by itself, except now with Toriyamas brand-new cover art, he chose different colors for certain characters than the anime. I think pretty much everyone already knows about Bulmas hair being blue/purple, but now to add to that list:
  • Radtiz's Saiyan armor is Gold & Black instead of Brown & Black.

Dodorias skin pigment is yellow instead of pink.

Ginyu Tokusentai armor is all gold padded instead of multi colors.

Namekian frogs are green instead of blue.

Trunks' belt, sword belt, and sheath are yellow instead of blue.

Trunks' CC logo is red instead of black.

Mr. Satan's cape is red instead of white.

Gohan's Great Saiyaman bandana is orange instead of white.

Kibito's skin pigment is dark blue instead of light purple.

Babidi's clothes are all white, instead of orange cape & blue robe.

Dabura's clothes are black instead of blue.
That's all so far, but I'm sure a few more will also surface when the rest of the Kanzenban's are released. For me, it really makes me wonder which colors are more 'right'. Think about Mr. Satan, with that title a red cape certainly seemed to suit him more, and Dabura's black clothing certainly makes him seem more devilish. But I can't get used to the idea of Dodoria with yellow skin.

Any ideas on the subject?

Some of these might've been present in the color chapters of the original manga. Great Saiyaman's bandana was always orange in the manga, which makes sense, since it matches his helmet. But then when you look at how he changed Kaioushin's colors, I wonder which ones he actually changed this time around.

Aren't the color chapters restored in the Kanzenban books?

And wasn't Dodoria's skin pigment pink on those pages? I remember Viz occasionally used a colour page from the manga as a front cover, and I'm sure there was one of Dodoria, and he was indeed pink.

I thought that too, even though I don't have the particular manga on me at the moment. Does this mean Toriyama forgot, or changed his mind?

Since I can't see any reason on Earth as to why he'd change the skin colour of a fairly minor character (and remember, we're talking about the man who forgot Kame Sen'nin here), I'll go with answer a.

That's a good list.

The frogs... yeah, they sorta had a good thing going with all that blue. Oh yeah, the sky was green, wasn't it? Either way, I guess a frog wouldn't look out of place.

So, how did the Namek colors work? Greenish water and sky, blue grass and tree leaves, right?

Namek's colour scheme really annoyed me. Or, rather, it bored my eyes. I was begging for some normal blue sky by the end, and I was quite pleased when it all went dark and gloomy for the ULTIMATE BATTLE.

Don't play the second DBZ NES game, then. It all takes place on Namek (except some parts in space, but space isn't known for it's great color scheme.). It looks really borig, and it never changes.

Hm.. Freezer's face was red in the manga, wasn't it?

Which Freeza? :)

I'm colour-blind, so I'm not really a great expert here, but looking at this and this, the colours look pretty consistent with each other, and have the same sort of creamy white that the cartoon model had. And Final Form Freeza is actually coloured more like the cartoon on the new drawing than on the old one.

Poor Cargo...

But yes, Freeza's face was red in the manga, while it was white in the anime.

Gagh! Scary.

Final Form Freeza's was all-white though, wasn't it? And was his first form's face always red? I know Toriyama sometimes forgot previous colouring schemes. His face is slightly red on the Kanzeban volumes, but it's more fleshy-coloured on vol 17, and vol 20 looks like he's standing in red light. His face also looks white-ish on the cover of tankoubon vol 23. And the back covers of the US versions of 23 and 25, and I assume that those are official Toriyama pieces of artwork. Did he forget that he'd been colouring his face red?
