Sure, his Goku is on the generic side (I don't think "wooden" is correct at all with regard to Corlette), and he doesn't seem fully invested in the character but I still enjoy what we got.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

I have always found Chris's Vegeta to be insufferably generic. He just sounds like a deep voiced man and doesn't have much variety to his voice what so ever. I don't see how you can watch the Saiyan arc beam clash and not be incredibly impressed with drummond's range and enthusiasm. He's got more talent in his pinky finger than Sabat does total as far as I'm concerned. It's the reason I have to play any dbz game in Japanese, I can't stand listening to Chris's wooden Vegeta.

Agreed. Corlett's Goku just sounds really bland & generic.penguintruth wrote:That's why I disliked Corlett and Schemmel. I don't want a Goku that "sounds heroic".90sDBZ wrote: Corlett has always been my favourite Goku after Sean. He sounds really heroic as Goku and is just good to listen to.
Corlett's Goku sounds like every other bland male hero in an action cartoon. He has no zest.

Sean definitely didn't try to make Goku sound heroic in Kai. He did in the old Z dub, though. Need I to point out an infamous "Hope of the Universe" line?penguintruth wrote:That's why I disliked Corlett and Schemmel. I don't want a Goku that "sounds heroic".

And he's no Batman. (Pretty much every actor who has done the "I'm/I am Batman" line in any variation sounds awesome).
Kind of a thought, for anyone who does have everything of this dub before, would they buy it again, similar to how some guys might have bought Star Wars on dvd, then bought it on blu-ray? Or with another manga/anime example, if someone already owned the entire Tokyopop release of the Sailor Moon manga, they might not buy the current Kodansha release. (Know I wouldn't have if I had the old release and not just Super S which cost me $80 due to being out of print).

No matter how many times I listen to Sean Schemmel's Goku I still can't hear a "superhero" voice. He sounds nothing like any version of Superman (or any other comic book super hero) I've ever heard.

You're missing the point. Obviously he didn't write it. He had no control over on how his character should be sounded like in the Z dub. But the fact of matter is he was given a little bit freedom on how he directed his Goku in the Kai dub. And he didn't make Goku sound heroic.ABED wrote:He didn't write it!DragonBalllKaiHD wrote:Sean definitely didn't try to make Goku sound heroic in Kai. He did in the old Z dub, though. You guys must not really understand how the voice works and/or biology in general. A voice does not change just because one becomes taller and/or more muscular. That argument is dumb and you should feel bad for even basing your judgement on it. Elliot Hulse is a big guy but his pitch is in the range of Drummond.

My voice sounds like Nozawa could do it, and I'm nearly 30.

The "Adult males should have medium to deep voices" argument against Nozawa is as stupid as the "Male children should have high pitch voices" argument against Nadalony.

My problems with Nadolny are that she sounds too husky and crackly and can't stop making little annoying noises in every scene she's in. She makes more unnecessary shuddering noises than anyone in the Japanese version.
Ugh, and that laugh of hers. You want to punch a baby porpoise after hearing that. I think it's the sound of souls being harvested.
A hallow performance that tries to cover its lack of substance with a gruff, precocious "cuteness" with no real personality.
Clinkenbeard sounds similar, but there's more behind the sound, and she does more with what she has, evolving the voice as the show proceeds. She knows when to restrain and unleash, unlike Nadolny.

Except for the laugh they all sound like problems that could easily be fixed by better direction. And despite Coleen Clinkenbeard being one of if not my most favorite voice actresses I am "meh" on her Goku, she gives Goku a generic "ruff and tumble boy" voice with absolutely nothing memorable about it. I'd rather Awkward laugh raspy Goku over that any day.

No, the Krusty laugh isn't the only problem. Her inflections are god awful. I fail to see how your argument about having better direction couldn't easily apply to Ms Clinkenbeard. She only had a single movie, and I loved her in it. Nadolny is memorable, and that's a problem, I remember how much her performance bugs me. I have no idea why anyone would want Nadolny's akward cadence to Clinkenbeard's smooth voice.ringworm128 wrote:Except for the laugh they all sound like problems that could easily be fixed by better direction. Chris Sabat's Vegeta has an extremely stubborn and pride filled tone. When he says "I am the prince off all Saiyans" it's believable. In Kai he also has a smug, smooth talking aspect which brings out his arrogance even more.radrappy wrote:I have always found Chris's Vegeta to be insufferably generic. Re: Will You Be Buying The "Rock The Dragon" DVD Box Set?
I think Nadolny did a fine job of voicing Gohan. She is especially great at doing angry Gohan. In the Cell Games when he went SS2 and many other times she really made him sound like he was really going berserk with rage. And she made him sound really vengeful when he was SS2 against Cell. Colleen also does a good job from what I've seen of Kai.
As for Drummond I really liked his performance overall in the Saban dub but have to admit he did often come across as a generic saturday morning cartoon villain. I could just imagine him in morning recording sessions trying to find Vegeta's voice by saying stuff like "Aaaaahh! I'm evil!!!". His screams and crazy laughs were great but he sometimes sounded like he was trying too hard to sound evil. And he sounded kind of awkard and unnatural when getting hit by Goku's Kamehameha.
Sabat is more suitable overall. Unlike Drummond he didn't make young Vegeta sound insane to the point that you could never imagine him calming down and turning good. I'd say his Vegeta has been good since the Cell saga of Z and only got better since then and is perfect in both the re-dub and Kai. He actually sounds like a proud warrior prince with a short temper which is exactly what Vegeta is. I can understand why some prefer Drummond but I simply don't understand why some people say Drummond was more true to the Japanese Vegeta.
Also I feel like Sabat's Vegeta and Sean's Goku have more chemistry than Drummond did with any of the Ocean Goku's. They're great together, especially in comedy scenes. You really believe Sabat when he has anything to say regarding Kakarot. I mean the 2 actors could do stand up comedy as Goku and Vegeta and it would be a sell-out show. I especially liked Vegeta's line in Funi GT when he's talking about the others going into space and says "With Kakarot leading the search they're bound to see trouble in no time". Perfect delivery and very natural sounding.
Also Drummond was a let down during the Majin Vegeta stuff. It would have been a good opportunity to go back to the insane over the top performance from the Saban dub but instead it was the same underwhelming performance from the rest of the Westwood dub.

No. Nadolny didn't do justice to the role at all. Nadolny gave Gohan a voice is deeper than your average 15 year old...90sDBZ wrote:I think Nadolny did a fine job of voicing Gohan....

Well in the Cell saga he was supposed to be 11-12. There are actually plenty of kids who's voices break at 11 or 12 and sound very deep right away so that's not a problem. Plus he's half saiyan so that could change the rate of his growth/voice development. I mean it's never actually said that saiyans develop at exactly the same speed as humans.TheMightyOzaru wrote:No. Nadolny didn't do justice to the role at all. And Nozawa's Goku doesn't sound like your average 20-40 year-old male but that doesn't stop the fans of the original from defending her performance.

He was 9-10.... Please don't bring dub errors into this. Goku's and Gohan's voice were both high pitched in Japanese. Being a Saiyan doesn't deepen your voice. Furthermore, no 11-12 year old boy has a voice that deep.
