Best Fights: As Voted By The Fans

Post by VenomSymbiote » Thu Jun 13, 2013 8:24 pm

I was cleaning up my Wii library a few days ago when I realized that I had completely forgotten about the bonus disc that came with Budokai Tenkaichi 3 when it came out so many years ago (in December 2007, I think). Since the bonus disc is a little bit of a interesting novelty, I'll detail what it is, and what was ultimately on it.

But first, a little background (for those that have no idea what I'm talking about)!

Way back on September 7th, 2007 (about three months before the game came out), Kanzenshuu (then Daizenshuu EX) posted this news. Basically, FUNimation was hosting a small poll on the offical DBZ website, in which fans could vote for their 10 favorite fights from the show. There were 15 choices, and the top ten would end up appearing on the bonus disc. The poll itself is long gone, so the only picture that I could find was the one in the news post, which unfortunately is rather small and obscures some of the choices- but no matter. Unfortunately, the site never followed up on this curiosity, and so this was simply forgotten. I do recall voting on this poll myself (although I truly can't remember what my ten favorites fights were).

I can't remember if this bonus disc was a pre-order bonus, or if it was included in all releases, or it if was something only early copies had. Nevertheless, I remember buying the game the day it came out, and the bonus disc was inside the box, with the game. The cover of the game was slightly modified to let the buyer know the game was included, with a little red bar on the bottom that read "Includes Bonus Disc."

Image

The disc itself is titled "Best Fights: As Voted By The Fans," and it looks like this. It has great art- I wonder where the image is from? The disc is a standard DVD; I'm not sure if it was region-coded or not, but I was able to play it on my DVD Player just fine (although I live in the U.S., so I'm not sure if that counts for anything).

Image

The disc is very straightforward; no ads, no special features. Just a menu, which contains what are (presumably) the top ten best-voted fights. Clicking the name of the fight would present you with a nice clip of the respective fights (which means that, basically, this disc contained short clips from ten fights. Yay.)

Image

The top ten fights were, as given on the DVD (you can click the links to watch the clip):

10: Gohan Vs. Buu
9: Baby Gohan Vs. Vegeta
8: Trunks Vs. Frieza
7: Super Buu Vs. Super Vegeta (They spelled Vegito wrong.)
6: Goku Vs. Buu
5: Goku and Vegeta Vs. Meta Cooler
4: Gohan Vs. Cell
3: Gohan Vs. Broly
2: Vegito Vs. Buu (Here, they spelled it correctly.)
1: SS4 Gogeta Vs. Omega Shenron

They listed the Super Buu and Vegito fight twice (presumably because, when Vegito went Super Saiyan, it was a "different" fight). The demographics of the choices are interesting. 2 fights were from GT (how was Baby Gohan Vs. Vegeta even on this list?!) 2 were from the movies (Broly and Meta Cooler), 4 were from the Buu Saga, the Cell Saga has 2, and the Saiyan and Frieza Sagas have no representation at all. How about that?

I've uploaded the respective clips onto Youtube, for those who are curious which parts of the fight were shown. Most were really, really short. Others were rather long, at almost 3 minutes. They were dub only, with the Faulconer score, and no other audio options are available. Interestingly, the video is in full-screen- what masters did they use to get these clips from?

There's not much to say about this bonus DVD- it's a thing. Personally, I'm glad to own it, even if I disagree with some of the results.

What do you guys think?

I disagree with EVERYTHING on the list to be honest. But nice little extra to the game was nice of Funi.

Well it's my opinion so I just don't really think those belong in that order. I'm just going to talk about number 1

SSJ4 Gogeta vs Shenron being the best fight in the series. I don't think that's correct. As with the history of DBZ - DBGT have. I've seen much better fights then a beatdown.

I know right. Apparently Baby Gohan Vs. Vegeta and SS4 Gogeta Vs. Omega Shenron are much better fights.

Now that's a list. I wonder if Funimation rigged the voting polls to chose the fights themselves

That Baby Gohan Vs. Vegeta was on the list continues to baffle me. I don't understand... what does that fight have that outmatches any of the Vegeta fights?
I figure that the SS4 Gogeta fight is on there simply because it is the last fight of the series, between what are the (presumably) strongest fighters in the series.

Goku vs Piccolo (Ma Junior) not being there invalidates the list.

Gogeta vs Omega Shenlong? Seriously? Something tells me this list was thought up by your average "Lol Krillin suxs Broly is maximum" type of fans.

I think Yamcha vs Tenshinhan deserves to be on the list or at the very least, as a runner up. It had awesome choreography and it was long, action packed, and was exciting the whole way through! It deserves a mention!!

I thought the fight with SSj4 Gogeta was one of the worst fights in GT. I remember hoping that Gogeta would be the same character as he was in DBZ Movie 12 and we just got a character spend most of his time being a total goof ball. After that episode, Gogeta never show up in the show again.

I wouldn't read too much into this list, or suppose that Funimation had anything to do with it.

These kind of extra content things that get bundled with games are usually slapped together by someone low down the ladder at the behest of the publisher: this is nothing more than that, nothing less.

This also strikes me as something to promote GT, which I believe was being released at the time.

But yeah, if neither of the Vegeta fights, or Piccolo are on there, it's a crap list.

In no particular order:
Goku vs. Piccolo Jr.
Goku vs. Vegeta (round 1)
Goku vs. Tenshinhan
Goku vs. Jackie Chun
Goku vs. Kuririn
Vegeta vs. Reacoom
Vegeta vs. Majin Buu
Piccolo vs. 17
Goku vs. Piccolo Daimao
Jackie Chun vs. Tenshinhan

Perfect list I would only switch #1 and #2 and maybe switch Piccolo versus No. 17 with Vegetta versus Kid boo, homeboy takes an epic beating and keeps on coming back for more!

One of the reasons I love the Reacoom fight is because he takes a beating but is still super tough. Toriyama doesn't resort to power blast, dust settles, no damage. Reacoom loses his hair, teeth, and his clothes are in tatters.
