Taking into account the FUNimation issue, the picture can easily be a fake. However, that doesn't mean that the information has to be false as well.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods
Yes, YES, YES!!!!!!!!! Finally, I have the proof. I told everyone for the longest both Birusu and Goku were fighting infact thee stratosphere and not space and also to get it out the way Bardock too is depicted fighting Freeza in Planet Vegeta's stratosphere. Compare both scene from the special to this movie, both Goku and Bardock are around similar position in their planet's stratosphere. That's correct, Goku and Bardock are never once shown fighting in outer space as in beyond the planet's atmosphere oxygen levels were they are zero, which is too deep space as in absolutely no oxygen there to draw on is what I'm saying. Goku and Bardock have always been shown to be within their own planet's atmosphere, namely the stratosphere which is oddly enough all movie depictions such as Bardock special, DBZ movie 2, and now finally BoGs features. Everyone is always fighting in that stratosphere area which does look like outer space to the uninformed fan.DBZGTKOSDH wrote:And finally the debate about if Saiyans can breath in space has reached its end! (Me hopes)
Akira Toriyama wrote:To think that they’d go all the way into the stratosphere……but thinking about it, they’re both aliens, after all. Maybe they can just barely breathe.
For different reference Superman in the Superman Returns movie and Man of Steel trailer is shown flying in the upper stratosphere which looks like outer space to an uninformed fan. Oddly enough, even in Goku was shown in the stratosphere in in his Deathball match with Superman. Its like everyone has been unknowingly correct about where to put Goku in regards to space like scenes. Also, I need to update my Goku and friends in space topic since its very relevant to the whole "can Goku and co. breath in space?" ordeal.
The short answer is no, however, through out the series Goku and most his friends (Piccolo, Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Kuririn, Trunks and ect.) Are shown to require very little oxygen. There are plenty of times where Goku and co. train on Karin's tower and Kami's lookout where the air is extremely thin compared to on the surface, way pass the kill zone for unconditioned normal humans who would pass out and die in 1/5th the oxygen at sea level. Goku is clearly fighting Birusu somewhere around the mid to upper stratosphere portion of our atmosphere in the BoGs movie meaning Goku is perfectly capable of surviving okay with what is equivalent to 1/1000th the oxygen at sea level on Earth.
I would have said Goku can survive all the way out into the Tremosphere at the Karman Line or when Earth's atmosphere starts at a vacuum or space. THowever, Toriyama does gives us an idea of Goku's limits by saying "maybe they (Birusu and Goku) can just barely breath in the stratosphere which amazingly enough fits in line what I have been saying this entire time in my very on "Goku and friends in space" topic for several months now. There were already examples to this with Karin's Tower and Kami's look out appearing to be in the tropopause to stratosphere layers of our atmosphere in the series so Goku can survive okay with scarce amount of oxygen compared to humans and anyone else that's been training up there too.
I just need to do some updating here and there with some things I missed and add this new tidbit from the man himself to it. Finally, proof that Goku cannot survive in outer/deep space. For emphasis,The stratosphere to the Karman Line is not a vacuum of space. There is still oxygen in those layers before they it becomes zero oxygen/a vacuum of space. I always knew this, but it feels good to finally having official confirmation for it.
Holding one's breath (No matter how long) is pretty illogical and stupid for what should be pretty obvious and technical reasons.rereboy wrote:Superman also can't breath in space. He just can hold his respiration for a very long time. I don't see why Goku and other saiyans can't (not as much as Superman, but still...).

Breathing a vacuum or near vacuum is just as illogical and stupid. He either needs to breathe to survive or he doesn't.Holding one's breath (No matter how long) is pretty illogical and stupid for what should be pretty obvious and technical reasons

Personally, I think that thinking that they can hold their breath is much better than thinking they can somehow breathe in whatever traces of atmosphere that there might be so far from the planet... Especially when Goku got tired more easily on Kami's lookout because the air was thinner... You know, like a regular human, implying that he needs similar amounts of oxygen and that he even needs time to adjust to a smaller quantity of oxygen that's still perfectly breathable by regular humans.

There's nothing to breath in a vacuum, Freeza, Cell, and Buu don't need to breath anything to survive in space, they simply exist in space without the need or requirement for oxygen or breathing. That's it, its not complicated, and yet you guys are treating it as such.Draken wrote:Breathing a vacuum or near vacuum is just as illogical and stupid. Are you saying two wrongs make a right? I don''t care what every character in action-fiction does, the authors are still wrong and ignorant or chose to ignore it for whatever reason.=. Doesn't make flawed scenes any more correct just because multiple people do it, lol. Holding one's breath is inane since it operates under the logic you can store more air in limited area in their lungs than what it can take which is just silly. Its like saying you can blow a weeks worth of air in a ziplock bag, its just wrong. It doesn't matter if the ziplock bag had the durability of titanium, you are still not getting any more into it just the same, lol.rereboy wrote:And yet pretty much every character in action-fiction that need to breathe and that goes into space and fights there does itMaster Turbo wrote:

. Funny how all those authors thought it was still better than making him somehow being able to breathe in vacuum or near vacuum.

You know, like a regular human, implying that he needs similar amounts of oxygen and that he even needs time to adjust to a smaller quantity of oxygen that's still perfectly breathable by regular humans.
Also, Goku is so not like a normal human, he's has things in common with a normal human, just to a much lesser extent. Any normal human would have been now passed out in mere seconds and died on Kami's lookout, that right there shows you Goku and co. are very different from normal humans. Now, Goku in no way needs a similar amount off oxygen, the fact he can clearly fight against Birusu just okay in the upper stratosphere which has 1/1000th at sea level on further proves that. Goku and co. need a very limited amount of oxygen compared to us. This has always been the case, Goku and co. are more superhuman and conditioned to handle much tougher environment than any normal human could ever hope to achieve such as the room of spirit and time unaided by anything but their ki enhanced bodies.
Humans can barely survive with ill effects in 1/5th the air at sea level, if airplanes weren't pressurized they would all suffocate, lose consciousness, and die in high altitude exceeding that amount of air at that level. Goku and co. can clearly survive in conditions that no normal human could ever hope to achieve and that's a fact. Also, I'm completely aware of the fact that Satan, Bulma, Baby Trunks, and Videl survive just fine on Kami's look out, but that's a massive oversight on Toriyama's part and not evidence to the contrary. As Toriyama mentions Goku can function in the stratosphere albeit barely, but still can survive a okay. That's not including the ridiculous air pressure and reduced temperatures that would easily kill a normal human.
The stratosphere is not a vacuum or near vacuum, its completely has oxygen in it to draw from, no matter how much reduced or scarce it is compared to sea level. Goku and Bardock are both depicted in the same area in their respective animated features, the stratosphere layer. Can Goku survive in the actual vacuum of space? No, because there's no air to breath, the amount of air in deep space is so negligible its practically non-existing. There's a difference between breathing in the vacuum of space which is illogical and survive in the depths of the vacuum of space which is different. Freeza, Buu, and Cell do the later, not the former.

Yet we've all seen Freeza, Cell and Buu out of breath during a fight. But really why are you guys even arguing about "scientific facts" when it comes to Dragon Ball? Especially in the Battle of Gods thread.Draken wrote:That's exactly what I said, thanks for repeating it.There's nothing to breath in a vacuum, Freeza, Cell, and Buu don't need to breath anything to survive in space, they simply exist in space without the need or requirement for oxygen or breathing. We need to breathe to survive. Characters you mentioned do not, but do so anyways.
We do not need to talk to survive, but do so anyways.
We do not need to run to survive, but do so anyways.
We do not need to laugh to survive, but do so anyways.
While these may seem like laughable (lol) examples, note that that is because we are human beings living in a world where everything DBZ is so out of the world it's hard to comprehend it could be happening somewhere in our universe. For beings such as Cell, Freeza, etc, talking, running, and laughing, are just as useless to them as breathing in terms of survival. But they do so anyways.

Goku, Beers, Boo, etc don't hold their breath in space, since they talk & scream. But we see that the Saiyans can't survive underwater, since Goku couldn't breath underwater. So, it seems that in Dragon World space, there is something to breath for aliens that can survive in space.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.
