Colleen Clinkebeard as Teen Gohan?

Post by DragonBalllKaiHD » Fri Jun 14, 2013 5:56 pm

I've been listening to her voice acting for her SSj2 Gohan. It's very apparent to me that she's a very talented voice actress. She was able to express her emotions pretty good. She went from high-pitched kid Gohan to a tad bit deeper voice for SSj2 Gohan. I was very happy with her potrayal of young Gohan. I was thinking, what if she keeps her role for Boo arc? Do you think it will work out well with her role as Teen Gohan?

Didn't we already get confirmation that Kyle Hebert was doing the role again?

Regardless...eh, I don't think so. I wasn't super keen on Nozawa doing Teen Gohan (she did alright, mind you, I just would have liked someone else to try), so I'm really not keen on Funimation doing the same thing. I'd much rather have Hebert reprise the role.

I can't tell if your "what if" means figuratively speaking, or if you contemplate that FUNimation might actually consider casting her as older Gohan. If it's the latter, then it's extremely unlikely since Kyle Hebert has confirmed that he has been recording for the Buu arc of (and since his narrator gig belongs to Doc Morgan in Kai, it kinda narrows down who he might be recording for). If you mean figuratively (which I'm positive that you do), I think it would be a very interesting move from FUNimation, but not wise. I'm not questioning Colleen's acting ability; she amazing and I'm sure she could pull off a relatively convincing teenage boy. However, keeping her as older Gohan would go against everything FUNimation has been doing for their adaptation of Kai, despite being more faithful to the original version. While the scripts are much improved from their first dub of DBZ, their version of Kai (mostly) uses already familiar voices for the main characters and I'm sure will continue to do so in the Buu arc.

Now If FUNimation back in 2010 were to fully adapt Kai as close as possible to the original version of the show, then they would have completely detached themselves from their older dub and had an entirely brand new cast that sounded much more in line with Masako Nozawa and Ryō Horikawa. Only then would they ever consider keeping Colleen Clinkenbeard to play Gohan through every stage of his life. However since this is not the case, having Colleen keep her role as teen Gohan would seem just a little bit awkward compared to the rest of the characters. That's just how I feel of course.

What works for the Japanese version doesn't necessarily work for the English. Not that I wouldn't mind hearing her try for a lark, Clinkenbeard needn't continue to be Gohan into his teens, especially when Kyle Hebert is already pretty good at it. The Japanese casting convention for the Son family isn't used for the English version anyway.

I was relieved that this thread wasn't about Cell Games-era Gohan, because people often refer to him as "Teen Gohan" and it burrows a hole into my soul.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Agreed. The convention most anime dubs have of using females to voice young boys and subsequently casting appropriate adult males to voice their grown versions works well for English-speaking audiences. I think for the most part, the actors we've had voicing grown Goku and grown Gohan have been well-casted (with the exception of Kirby Morrow and that dude from the AB Groupe/Big Green dubs.)

Though... it would've been interesting if Schemmel was able to play Bardock or Tullece (if just to hear him try an "evil" kind of voice.)
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

It would be interesting but like PT said there's really no need for it. Just like there's no actual need for Schemmel to voice Tullece. That said I'm interested to hear how Colleen Clinkenbeard would handle Adult Goku even though I'm "meh" on her Kid Goku.

If you want to hear him do some voice work as a bad guy, he voiced Paradox in the Yu-Gi-Oh!: Bonds Beyond Time movie, and Black Doom in Shadow the Hedgehog (I had to be told that, because I couldn't tell).

He's done more, from what I understand (Dr. Crowler from GX being one of the creepier voice roles, lol), but those were just two I remembered hearing.

As for Clinkenbeard as grown up Gohan or Goku? Yeah, it wouldn't really work in English most likely. It would take a certain kind of voice to work, and I think we'd just get some pitched down version of Luffy (when the two should have distinct voices, in my mind) if she tried.

Question? Did you hear Colleen before you went deaf? Do you have a temporarily deafness? Cause I remember you saying you're deaf.
I'm really curious. Since I'm deaf and that video has no caption, did she by any chance talk about me?

Yes he did listen to her voice before he died. Now he is dead and haunts Kanzenshuu.

That's what I get for playing WWE 13 and typing at the same time. Mankind vs Taker.

"OH GOD! MY GOD! That killed him! As god as my witness! Mick Foley is broken in half!" - Jr

I remember seeing that for the first time. Actually thought Mick died.... . But on topic...seriously was he deaf? Also Teen Gohan with Colleen would be accurate to JPN/Jap but it would not work. It worked for the Korean Dub(Champ) because it was more of a soft spoken voice. Other dubs went with male voice(Slightly deep and some ultra deep) cause it fits better.

I think it would certainly be possible for women to play the young adult forms of the Son boys in an English dub, but probably not Colleen Clinkenbeard.

He also played one of the Meterex leaders in "Sonic X" (I forget the character's name, but he plays the villain in the scene where Sonic goes "Dark Sonic").

What I find interesting--not in a good or bad way, just interesting in general--is that while Schemmel is most famous for playing a good guy, it seems like most of his voice acting work is playing bad guys.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

I'm not completely deaf. I was born hearing, but became deaf when I was 2. My left ear can still hear if it's loud and close enough, but my right ear is completely shut. I can still tell if Clinkenbeard is good or not. I guess you could call me hard of hearing, but then again I can't speak English like you do.

I still would need to depend on subtitles if I want to understand what is going on in the shows.

Well it could work. If the voice was more soft-spoken and not 100% girl voice. Not hating on Colleen. For kids she fits but when she voice teens - adult she makes them sound like a badass female. Which fits in most cases but no for the Son family boys(Sounds like a band). I do think if given the chance Stephanie Nadolny (Can't belive I'm saying this) if she gets the right voice and direction she could voice the Son family in their teens and for Goten's or Gohan's case adult forms.

I'd rather Kyle Herbert remain Adolescent Gohan.
