New Site Layout

Post by DragonBoxZTheMovies » Fri May 03, 2013 1:36 am

Looks pretty good. I noticed the Twitter feed's gone and the sub-headings for each section look a bit cramped, but apart from that, it's nice. :)

EDIT: Noticed some of the images are gone from the menus, but I assume they'll be re-added at some point.

It does look nice. Actually it reminds me of Crunchyroll's layout (which I also like). :3

Well, that scared me. Anyway, neat new layout. I especially like the 'Recently edited pages' on the bottom.

I found a little bug in the website. If you press one of the main menu buttons it becomes red. If you switch to another menu the previous menu becomes white again and the newly clicked menu becomes red. If you press the same menu twice and fold it back up it stays red. Shouldn't it become white again?

Aaaah! Things are on the right! Everything I know is wrong!

Actually, I'm pretty indifferent about this, although the menus sliding out at the top seem to be less smooth now.

I was wondering why the main site was taking a little longer than usual to load. Whoa.

Hmm...to be honest, I kinda preferred the old layout better. This new one's not bad by any means though, and I'll certainly get used to it in a few days - the old one just looked...I'unno. A little more like most other websites I visit for news (so I guess mainly ANN), so it was very easy on the eyes, whereas the new layout is...different. But not in a bad way.

I dunno, I'm rambling. I'm sure I'll get used to it, so it's not a big deal by any means.

I'll/we'll have a lot more to say on the subject soon, but the main thing... rather, main absolute necessity... was streamlining the code behind-the-scenes.

I'm sure there will be more updates/enhancements (both design-wise and code-wise), but that's what it is for right now. Hujio can speak more to that end than I can. I just pay the bills around here. Which are getting pretty high. If anyone wants to get a head-start on helping out again...

I like it. It'll take some getting used to but I dig it so far.

As many are well aware around here, our traffic load has sky rocketed in the past few months (thanks in large part to our exhaustive coverage of Battle of Gods). This has led to some downtime, errors, and all sorts of not-so-good stuff. When we first launched Kanzenshuu, much of this wasn't a problem because our viewing rate was much smaller (pages per hour) and the server could easily handle the requests. As our requests to the server have almost tripled, causing these fun issues, we're having to rethink things in terms of data allocation. Creating a new layout was one way to reduce the amount of data and requests to the server. I've streamlined much of the code, removed some PHP scripting, removed large images, removed WordPress widgets, etc. The old homepage was on average ~3MB in size. The new homepage is so far more around ~1.5MB. We've also gone from 10 widgets to 3 widgets, which greatly reduces the requests to WordPress. All-in-all, everything I did was to reduce requests to the server and hopefully reduce load times.

Holy shit what have you done? D: I'm scared of change! I jest, but I will have to get used to a new layout all over again. :P

Looks cool. Hopefully the change benefits things, unlike youtubes crappy one channel layout crap.

Could I make just a small request? this isn't my site so I have no say in what goes, but is there a small chance we can have the control panel on left side instead of the right? it's just odd to me lol :P other than that I love it.

While I would have to say, aesthetically, I preferred the previous layout this new one looks good and clean. I think with consolidating the right and left sidebars into a single sidebar, it just accentuates the empty space once you get further down the page from the immediate news item. Perhaps widening the content area somewhat might reduce this without throwing off the layout?

While I imagine there will be (likely constant) tweaking here and there, the sidebar appears as "cold" and corporate, devoid of personality without any graphics to visually identify the site as Kanzenshuu.

I'll be honest, I'm not digging it nearly as much as the layout before. I don't like the nav menu as much as it seems a little too in your face before it drops down... i kind of miss the images of goku, etc. in the drop down menu and I'm not as big of a fan of the nav bar on the right instead of the left. I hate to sound so negative but it's just not jellin with me as much. I do like the added functionality of the menu system though, like the "quick links" section to the series and all that. Just doesn't look quite as slick as before. I understand the motivation to remove things to help with the server load times but honestly it's not as aesthetically pleasing as I think it could or should be given what we had before. Also the increased traffic to the site is likely only going to be temporary until Battle of Gods completely passes unless they make more movies or announce a new series or something that will skyrocket popularity again.

I'm not sure if the top logo was always the size it is, I feel like it used to stretch across the top screen so that it fit better. It looks like it doesn't fit given the length of the top bar... if it was always like that, this new layout just makes me notice it more.

I'm a little conscious of posting around here as I am new, but I did find the previous design's sensibilities more pleasing, but if it is arising out of technical needs I guess there isn't much other way around it. It's not a bad lay out, but I feel it misses more of Kanzenshuu's character than previously. A really good point though is that it now functions really well on my mobile (cell) phone and fits to my device's screen perfectly!!

May I give some suggestion for your new layout? How about modifiying the color to the text on the categories just below the Kanzenshuu header when you click on one of them? Maybe change it to blue instead of red? The red looks a little bit too glaring. Also the layout looks better with blue texts. :)

Are QUICK LINKS in GUIDES section supposed to look like that?

And my name in the USER PANEL is "HleV" for some reason (first letter capitalized).

Umm... Yes? Maybe? Honestly I have no idea because I have no comparison for what "like that" looks like. I know what it's supposed to look like, but I don't know what you're seeing.

That's an old carry over in the CSS file from the previous layout, one which I had forgotten about. It should be corrected now once you refresh your browser.

Image

This bright block in a darker background doesn't fit very nicely to me, so was wondering if it's intended.
