More than 5 Years On....

Post by DragonBoxZTheMovies » Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:00 pm

...since Burst Limit came out and kicked off the, then "Next Generation", of Dragon Ball video games.

Funnily enough, it is still (by some margin) the best looking DB game for the PS3/360.

#Realtalk. Burst Limit still the best looking. And the best animated story mode is from the Generation BEFORE this one. Odd how that works. I mean Budokai 1 if anyone's confused.

Really? I always thought Raging Blast was the best looking. I do understand that it is all subjective though but I don't think Burst Limit is the best looking.

I always found the Raging Blast graphics to be a bit...plain. It didn't feel like there was a whole lot of life going on in those characters, but it was certainly a huge step up from Sparking!! Meteor.

There was a solid game in there somewhere. It all went downhill from there.

Yeah it is kinda sad that Burst Limit, the first next gen game, still looks the best of any next gen game :? .

Five years ago was a only few years ago. So I don't feel old at all to be honest. The graphics still look fine now in my opinion.

I thought Dimps' models made a big improvement here. Too bad their 7th generation stint was short lived.

I disagree. While RB1 was a little pale overall, its graphics represented the anime the best.

This is my frame of mind too. They looked the most like Dragon Ball Z, I love Burst Limit's graphics but they were DIMPs own style.

What's odd to me is that every HD DBZ game that I've played doesn't look better than the other. So far no game has nailed it for me yet.

The fluidity of the character models is also something to take into account. No game comes close to matching the fluidity of these character models. Just look at Raditz's hair:

Burst Limit > RB1/UB (Can't decide which of these two deserve the second place because they both look great).

These are the three best looking DBZ games of this gen for me. I'm kind of disappointed that Battle of Z isn't going to put graphically the 360/PS3 to the limit, but oh well, the gameplay looks like a lot of fun (Zenkai Battle Royale).

The stages and the color palette in Burst Limit really were great and it doesn't seem to have dated one bit over the past 5 years, and while I'm not a big fan of the direction the art of the games is taking at the mo' (Ultimate Blast/Battle of Z) I don't think there has been an art style yet where I have thought to myself 'Wow, this is perfect'. I'd love to see what a potential PS4/XB1 game might look like!

I think that the graphics are way too shiny than they should be.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

In my opinion I think while Burst Limit may have had the best graphics, Raging Blast 1 resembles the show more, Ultimate Tenkaichi's were good too.

Burst Limit reminds me of the Toriyama illustrations on the volume covers. Extra shiny.

This is a tad unfair of a comparison. The demands of Burst Limit compared to the other games this gen are a lot less. All of the console Dimps games are essentially 2D games rendered with 3D visuals. That's a lot less demanding than having a 3D arena to battle in or a variety of additional opponents to face off against. Of course there's an issue of budget as well. Given Burst Limit was part of the final round of Atari published DB titles it likely received funding from both Atari, and Namco Bandai where as more recent titles would only have NB footing the bill. Burst Limit being the first HD game probably afforded them the benefit of the doubt in regards to these games selling as well as they did on PS2.

That said, talent obviously plays a role. Personally, I think Dimps is a much better development studio than Spike and it shows in their Dragon Ball work. Yes, the games made by Dimps may not accurately represent the look of the anime, or Toriyama's art 1:1, but I think doing that is a mistake. That art was done in a flat medium like manga, and non-stereoscopic TV. Dimps and Spike made games using 3D visuals so doing a 1:1 adaptation of 2D in 3D just makes things look awkward.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

It's a pretty beautiful game. Personally the last great DBZ game. I can't stand that 3D camera bullshit where it's behind you half the time. Give me a straight up old school fighter with some verticality for air battle and I'm sold. This had it all. My only complaint is the small roster of characters and the fact that once you master one, you've mastered them all.

Unfortunately I'm not convinced we'll see anything like this again. If I had it my way, we'd have a 2D DBZ game that played like Blazblue.
