VHS? Whatever for?

That said, I have the official Japanese VHS release of DBZ movie 12 back at my parents' house in the States.

I actually stopped by a Book Off in NY yesterday and they had a ton of old anime VHS tapes from Japan. No DragonBall though but, I guess if you can find a Book Off it's worth checking out.

Here's something I put together back at the time (incidentally, with Julian's Movie 12 VHS :P):

For your reference, here's a 6500K color temperature version of that VHS shot. NTSC-J's standard color temperature is 9300K, so without color gamut conversions, its colors look a little yellowish on PC monitors which usually are set at 6500K.

...Hmm. This thread just put a question into my head. Were VHS tapes subject to the same kind of different regions that DVD and Blu-ray releases have had? Or were VHS tapes universal?

No region restrictions on VHS, but all the same NTSC/PAL/SECAM incompatibility issues.

Ahh, so there still would have been problems back in the day to prevent you just popping a tape into your regular VCR then. All right, was just curious as I'd never seen anyone discuss that before.

Well, not a Japanese VHS in an American player. We're both NTSC. No issues at all there.

It's all those crazy Europeans that put things into a nonsensical mess.

But switching between PAL and SECAM was as easy as clicking one buttong on the remote :) The NTSC is a thing I've heard about for the first time like 5 years ago - way after the death of VHS :)
