Does the Super Saiyan aura make any sound in the manga?
Is there any sign to tell?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Every time I put my ear to the page, I don't hear anything for some reason.
In all honesty though, I can't remember any specific instances of a SSJ aura onomatopoeia. Doesn't mean I didn't miss it though.
"You haven't figured it out yet? I'm the Saiyan who came all the way from Earth for the sole purpose of beating you. I am the warrior you've heard of in legends, pure of heart and awakened by fury. That's what I am. I AM THE SUPER SAIYAN, SON GOKU!" - Goku, Dragon Ball Z Kai, The Angry Super Saiyan! Throw Your Hat in the Ring, Son Goku!

I checked several moments of the Perfect Edition (Kanzenban).
It makes an "engulfing" sound when activated and when the aura appears (translated as "Woosh", "Gwooo" or "Shweee" most of the time).
After that, when the character are doing what they do (talking or fighting), there's no sound indication for the aura, which might indicate that the aura's silent or simply that you're supposed to keep imagining the same kind of sound than when it appears and it's just not written over and over again on every single panel.

Whenever somebody becomes a SSJ there's a noise and usually an aura, but when Gohan transforms into the "Golden warrior" he doesn't have an aura and the transformation still makes a noise. When a SSJ powers up, or there is a long transformation there is usually a noise, and when Goku reaches full power against Cell there is a "Hssss" in the Viz edition. The only times I've noticed the forms aura making a noise when not powering up, but instead just staying stationary or moving around slowly is when they are SSJ2/3, but I just think it's the sparks in the aura that are making the noise.
I may be wrong, but that's what I remember anyway.
Also, I think the SSJ aura does make a noise.

^ Yes, the Super Saiyan 2 aura (though I only checked Gohan) has the same engulfing "Woosh" effect for the aura, but also some electrical repeating "Zat" effects for the lightnings around when he starts walking.
However, much like for the aura, the lightning effect is not kept in subsequent panels despite the fact that it's unlikely those lightnings are silent, so it might imply the aura is supposed to have its sound being constantly heard as well even though it is not always written.
So yeah, you got your answer: in the manga, the aura surely makes a sound and it's very likely the sound - for both the aura and the lightnings - is constant.
The anime staff considered it exactly that way too cause in the anime, the aura makes a repeating "Woosh woosh woosh woosh" noise as long as it's there and lightnings make repeating electrical sounds as well.
So they thought the sound was meant to be constant despite not being written all the time as well.
