The worst they can say is no. We might as well put it out there.

As far as the text of the petition goes, I think a little background information about what the Kanzenban volumes were like would be a good touch. I'm sure they're aware, but we should make sure that we state exactly what we want in the message, so if they do half-ass it, it'll be on no one but them. Images could also be helpful.

Also, are we planning on using a certain website or platform for this? If you need any help drafting or publishing the petition, be sure to PM me, I'd be happy to help.

Oh cool, one more way to sell the same product again without fixing any actual mistakes.
Assuming it's full color, I doubt they'd be able to censor much without seriously tampering with the integrity of the artwork. Then again, that's never stopped Viz before.

I have an account on change.org I planned on posting it on. Ill update the text to include some history and post it when I get home tonight.

Glad I resisted the urge to buy the 3-in-1s...

They've already censored Mr. Popo's lips in the US Weekly Shonen Jump and it looks awful.

How on Earth will I live without Mr. Popo's lips? I need that kinda racist caricature in my manga! These books should be burned.

The color version of Z the plan on releases in my eyes is like comparing the orange bricks to the Dragon Boxes.

I've added a little history about the kanzenban releases.

The site allows you to have a single image with, I currently has this
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Eghi7MPCrls/T ... perfil.jpg
If anyone has the kanzenbans and would like to take a similar photo, please do. I really hate using a stock photo from google.

Also when someone signs the petition it will send an email with an attached letter out to an email. This was the only email I could find for Viz customer_service@viz.com. If anyone know any better ones let me know.

I have it up and running here: http://www.change.org/petitions/viz-med ... -volumes-2
So please read it over, sign it, share/tweet it, and if you spot any mistakes please let me know. I'll start the first wave of posting it around after work tmw.

That's something that I don't expect to ever be changed back. It's a racial thing as it looks a lot like Blackface.

Nothing else has been censored so far.

Yeah, you mostly only see that stuff kept in Osamu Tezuka's manga, usually with a "Keeping true to the original, different times, wouldn't probably be the same if he was still with us, but since he's passed on, we don't want to alter his work" thing Tezuka Productions has been known to throw in the books when relevant.

Other than that, the manga has been uncensored, and you can understand why: It's hard enough to make edits in black and white manga look good. Factoring color makes it even harder (sometimes edits can fall in blank areas of the page so it's a slight change, or they can try to fill in black for a costume to censor some nudity/cleavage, but color throws all that out the window).

Still, I'd like uncut releases of both for collecting sake.

I don't care if it's offensive. Go read another manga if you dislike it. It's part of the manga.

I mean, it's silly, but not baleful. I very much doubt Toriyama intended to offend anyone.

Also, I own a Mr. Popo plushie. But I'm as white as a ghost, so my perspective is my own.

He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Offense is in the eye of the beholder, but it's not racist unless racism was in the mind of the creator. I agree with Stephen Fry when it comes to those who find themselves subjectively offended by something, "It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine"

I understand why it's removed, I just don't think it's necessary. This is especially true considering the context of those lips in the series. They're on plenty of non-black characters and to me, that's sufficient evidence that there's no inherent racism intended here. If it's being removed to avoid complaints, then why not remove all the violence and language too. It just seems silly to me.

Popo's speech isn't stereotyped whatsoever unlike many Disney cartoons that go unchanged today. Those cartoons aren't changed because it would anger fans around the world who are used to those caricatures. It's the same principle here, it's just irritating to many fans who are used to Popo's very recognisable design.

I think Fizzer summed it up best:

There's no doubt my mind that there's no malicious intent behind the design of this character. Like I said, those lips are just part of Toriyama's roster of designs - they're not exclusive to one race. Viz aren't going to get destroyed by mass public outrage because they decided to keep an artist's work untouched. I feel like it's them trying to uphold a company image - ironically, they're doing the exact opposite with those who actually buy their products.

Well, actually, that's exactly why they did it in the first place. Carole Weatherford launched a shit storm and Viz responded.

To be honest though, I'm not bothered by his missing lips. Maybe it's just because Popo isn't that important to me as a character, but as much as I'm for preserving the integrity of the original, it doesn't bother me when I'm reading it.

But yeah, I mean I'm not going to cry about it as I read it but at every first glance, I can't help but wince.

That was in the early 2000's at the hight of the series popularity in the West. Funimation didn't give a shit then and doesn't no. While the character was censored for network TV in the US, Nicktoons and the home video release left Popo intact. Popo isn't my favorite character, but I don't believe in censorship and even then I care about the people who's favorite character IS Popo (My best friend for example). Any character could be someone's favorite and none of them should be censored. Also, I still think straight up removing a character's lips and just leaving a white spot is awful looking and genuinely does take me out of the experience which is a huge shame as the color releases are gorgeous.

Viz 3-in-1 Vol. 2 (Tankobon 4-6) is out.

So... I saw the 2nd Viz 3-in-1 at my local Barnes & Noble the other day. I wasn't able to flip through the entire book, but it looked like it may have been uncensored (Goku's weenis was in there for a couple panels.)

Does anyone know if this second collection is really uncensored or not?

Or is there just a lack of "objectionable" material in these volumes?

Goku's junk was left in the first 3-in-1, which was censored.
