Too many are good!

I have a three-way-tie between "Moeru Heart De Red Ribbon" , "Battle Point Unlimited" and "The lone warrior"

They're all just too good!

Can I just say all the songs used during the Red Ribbon/Uranai Baba arcs? Red Ribbon Army, The Son Goku Song, The Blue Travellers, Mystery Wonderland, The Dragon Ball Legend... They punctuate the rather long arc and it's the only time the show ever really leaned heavily on vocal songs, before Kai, if you can say Kai's usage was heavy.

Great, I am listening to them all now.

Mezase Tenkaichi, particularly at the climax of Goku vs Jackie Chun. It makes the fight about ten times as awesome as it was in the manga. :D

Close second would be Spirit Vs. Spirit, as it accents one of the most skillfully done scenes in all of DBZ.

This may be a dumb question, but what is an insert song?

As the name implies, it's a song inserted into the show. Basically any anime song that isn't an opening or closing is classified as an "insert song."

Does it have to be a song made for the show, or can any song be considered one, as long as it's put in?

Boy, that's a tough decision. If I had to choose one, I think I would have to go with "Solid State Scouter". Great song to listen to while watching Bardock fight against Freeza's henchmen. It also kind of reminds me of old-style RPG battle themes, which I love listening to.

A very close second would have to be "Fly High" from Dragon Ball Z Episode 46. It's such a great overlooked song in the Dragon Ball Z OST.

Hmmm....For Dragon Ball anime, I'd have to go with Mezase Tenkaichi . I just love the vocals on that one. It was great during Jackie Chun's and Gokuu's final fight too. Just a sweet, upbeat fighting song that aims for fun and doesn't take it self too serious (which is pretty much Dragon Ball in a nutshell

For Dragon Ball Z, it's a tough choice between Battle Point Unlimited and Day of Destiny –Spirit vs Spirit–...Despite all it's dated goodness (and plagiarism), I'm going to have to give Battle Point Unlimited the silver trophy. Day of Destiny is not only powerful in the song itself but in the context it was put in in Episode 184.

For DBZ TV Specials (yeah, I'm separating the Specials from the series even though they're the same. Bite me :P ) I'm putting MIND POWER …Ki… as my choice for it's surprisingly dark tone and bleak atmosphere.

For the DBZ movies, I'll go with I Lo~ve Mr. Piccolo since it's coot.

For Dragon Ball GT I pi- oh...GT never had any insert songs. The hell is up with that.

I really didn't watch much of Kai so I'm not familiar with the insert songs but I guess Take the Stage!! Ginyu Special-Squad!! is pretty cool.

Technically yes, that would count, but did Dragon Ball ever use a piece of music not specifically made for the show(excluding GT's OP and EDs, since they are not insert songs)?

GT's OP and EDs weren't created for GT specifically?!

This. This, so much. Mezase Tenkaichi is just an awesome song, and I really think they missed a great chance to use it again later in DBZ, when we were panning around the Budokai grounds for the first time in years, during the Boo arc.

Beyond that though, I'm also really partial to 'Dragon Ball Densetsu' (though I honestly always flash back to movie 3 for this rather than it's use as an insert song), 'Red Ribbon Army', and to a lesser degree, 'Solid State Scouter'.

Oh, and some of the Kai insert songs were great too. If you don't love 'Ginyu Tokusentai' or 'Only a Chilling Elegy', then we have a problem. :P I kid of course.

I don't know about the original version ever using outside songs, but the Funimation dub of some of the movies used various songs from a few bands.
I personally really liked the use of Disturbed's "The Game" during the fight between Goku and Cooler in the Funi Dub of Movie 5. I don't know about any of the Japanese insert songs though.

I'm 99% sure Toei was jumping on the trend of double promotion opening/ending themes in anime; fans of the series might discover some new music, and fans of the artists may take interest in the show.

Mezase Tenkaichi, Sanjō!! Ginyū-Tokusentai!!, and Saiyan Blood are probably my favorites. Of those, I listen to Ginyū-Tokusentai the most, so I guess that'd be number one. But I could easily put together a top ten.

In fact, if you want to quickly create a popular image, simply over saturate the colors and increase the contrast. While you may not achieve a sophisticated image, you will achieve an image that will please a less demanding audience." - Alain Briot
