DBZ Action Figures packaged with weapons

Post by WesMan23 » Sat Jul 13, 2013 3:29 pm

We all remember, years ago, the DBZ figures that came out, that featured the characters with improbable weapons. I think Freeza had a sword or a gun, Goku may have had a gun as well, and there were others. Does anybody know what the point of these figures were, why they were packaged that way?

It makes me think of that photo I saw last night of a Superman toy that came packaged riding a motorcycle.

I don't remember those db toys well, but I feel like one of them had a rocket launcher or a bazooka too. I can only guess that there were excess accessories from other things that they packaged in just to get rid of them and allow a reason to charge a little more money for the toys?

Or the company that made them knew nothing about the property aside from what the characters looked like.
On hiatus.

There was a design from one of the games where Mecha Freeza had a huge bazooka thing. I never understood the point of that either.

I can't say I remember the ones with weapons, but wasn't there a line that came with vehicles? I think Trunks had his time machine, which makes sense and fits, but I seem to remember a Vegeta that came with a sports car or something...

A comic book store near where I live still sells these figures. Weirds me out every time I see them.

That seems like the most likely explanation Chuquita. :) The toys released in the UK came with unnecessary accessories, my Hirudegarn was even packin' a machinegun for God's sake! And the weapons couldn't even be held by the figures most of the time as their arms were usually bent with clenched hands. So that could also mean they were 'leftovers' from other toy ranges too.

Here's the one I remember the most. It always confused me that Krillin had long hair and a gun.

They have a ton more listed here. They seemed to really release what ever they wanted to back then. I even remember seeing kid Trunks way before he was shown on tv. For some reason I thought these figures we re-releases of the super battle collection toys. But the Krillin with hair toys wasn't part of the SBC series, or if he was I can't find anything on it.

The people in charge probably felt these figures seemed too boring on their own and needed a little extra something. They figure young boys like weapons so... :\

Side note: This line was a mish mash of other DB figure lines from Japan and Europe. Originally, the Europian figures came from a company called "AB toys" and didn't come with weapons over there. They also had a horrible image on the package of Super Saiyan Vegeta with his hair colored black...

On the flip side though, when Irwin started to make DB toys for the US market, they were eventually released overseas and THOSE had weapons. Madness.
