Err, this is Akira Toriyama we're talking about.Saiga wrote:It seems like this story is going to ultimately be an Aesop about humanity, which has me interested.

Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion thread (DB–11?)
Toriyama saying this might be the last comic he works on by himself just makes it more exciting on top of the possible DB tie-in.
It is not like we won't see his work in other areas.

Isn't Gokuu 11 years old in the beginning of the series?kei17 wrote: Did anyone else notice that the episode number in the cover was also somewhat suggestive? It says episode 1/10+1 and DB-11. I thought Goku was 12 when DB started, but I still wouldn't count that theory out after how some of the time related math in BOG ended up.Insertclevername wrote:Isn't Gokuu 11 years old in the beginning of the series?kei17 wrote: Did anyone else notice that the episode number in the cover was also somewhat suggestive? Re: Akira Toriyama is going to write a new (non-DB) series
He's 12 actually. But it's possible that it took about a year for him to arrive at the earth (though Daizenshuu says no), so if that's the case, it can be 11 years before Dragon Ball chapter 1. Also, Jako can be a member of that space police thing mentioned in Daizenshuu.Insertclevername wrote:Isn't Gokuu 11 years old in the beginning of the series?kei17 wrote: Did anyone else notice that the episode number in the cover was also somewhat suggestive? Re: Akira Toriyama is going to write a new (non-DB) series
Maybe Jaco's mission is to kill baby Goku since he was sent to destroy Earth, and the old man and the girl are trying to convince him not to because he's just a child. After some interference from the two other characters, Jaco misses his target trying to kill Goku and ends up knocking him down the ravine instead. Since Goku loses his memory from the fall, Jaco determines that Goku is no longer a threat and returns to the space police, ending the series. Of course other things happen in between and maybe even after, but that would be my guess as to how this would tie into Dragon Ball. I just read the chapter not too long ago and I haven't went over it again to pick out the finer details yet to make sure this theory isn't contradicted, so feel free to pick this theory apart if you so desire.kei17 wrote:He's 12 actually. Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion thread (DB–11?)
Well, I just finished reading it. I enjoyed it a lot actually, more than I thought I would but perhaps that's down to all these hints and possibilities of it being DB related in some way. Everything that's been brought up so far heavily hints at it being a likely subject. I'd say the most obvious evidence is Toriyama's foreword over anything. Possible last manga...deliberately classic. That plus the dangerous alien pod makes me think this is all a great build up.
But then I may be hit with crushing disappointment in a few months.

Re: Akira Toriyama is going to write a new (non-DB) series
Goku was raised by Gohan for a bit, not sure exactly how long he was by himself before Bulma got there, so maybe that year or so he lives with Gohan when he bumps his head works in. Such as instead of successfully killing Goku what happens instead is Jako is the reason for Goku's head trama and esentially reprogramming. Just a thought.kei17 wrote:He's 12 actually. Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion thread (DB–11?)
Loving all the theories people are tossing out there. I'll go on record and say the "leading up to Goku as a baby" is my favorite so far.
Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but I'm anticipating that next chapter's title page will go from "DB-11" to "DB-10", and onward from there until we hit whatever this "10+1" end-point is. Thoughts?

Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion thread (DB–11?)
For those curious about reading Jaco in the English Weekly Shonen Jump, the first chapter is included in the new Weekly Shonen Jump Starter Pack which is totally free. So go take a look!
One complaint I have is the graphic design on Jaco's title page. The English text that reads "Jaco The Galactic Patrolman" looks SO much better in the Japanese version, probably because it was hand-drawn by Toriyama. That's a small, nit-picky complaint though, and I think Viz did a great job with the chapter over-all.
The art looks way better in the official versions than in the scanlations (that I'm just looking at in retrospect, I'm a proud WSJ subscriber
) So everyone in a region that can access it should take a look at Viz's sample!

Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion thread (DB–11?)
Likewise, I compared the scanlation quality both in terms of the translation and visual quality and it's clear that Viz's is superior. Whoever translated that phrased things very strangely in many parts of it. Also, visually, they've applied some strange denoising that fucking with the colour artwork and makes the black and white look too jagged.medama_oyaji wrote: The art looks way better in the official versions than in the scanlations (that I'm just looking at in retrospect, I'm a proud WSJ subscriber) So everyone in a region that can access it should take a look at Viz's sample!

I also like the theory that Jaco is there to stop baby Goku when he arrives, and it's him who winds up knocking Goku or such into the revine when Grandpa Gohan isn't looking
and turns him into a good boy.
Boy theres a lot of ways that could happen huh.
Roshi made it seem like Goku just fell out while G Gohan was carrying him, while the Bardock special makes it seem like Goku was already turned good when Gohan found him.

I like this manga!
So Toriyama-esque. Jaco is cool as hell and so is the old man. I want to see Jaco fight for real! I wonder what kind of cool tricks he has up his sleeve.

Well, Toriyama tried to be subtle, but Shueisha wouldn't let him apparently, lol.
I'm interested to see how this connects with Dragon Ball.
Enjoying the comic thus far, though I do wonder what Toriyama will do for future comics after his recent message. Co-write? Let someone else take art duties? Writing duties?

I thought it was decent. I had some funny moments and Jaco seems like a fun character. I personally rather have it be a stand alone story then it be link into the Dragon Ball universe.

Now that they've confirmed it, I'm almost-certain this is a prequel and we'll get to see baby Goku and Grampa Gohan before the end of it. X3Mewzard wrote:http://www.kanzenshuu.com/2013/07/16/ja ... confirmed/

I think he'll have someone else take over the artwork, since I feel like I've read more complaints by Toriyama drawing than I have for complaints regarding coming up with stories.
Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion thread (DB–11?)
I'm actually quite glad Shueisha spilled the beans; that way I don't have to listen to people continually sizing Jaco up against Dragon Ball, despite them having nothing in common. :p
As for how it relates, it seems to me a story post-Dragon Ball, honestly. The time travel bit seemed really important even before I knew it was tied into the Dragon World, and now it's even more important probably. The biggest mystery is, who's speaking at the beginning? I notice a lot of folks thinking it's Jaco but it seems to me like it's Omori. The Omori as related to Dr. Gero thing is interesting. For a moment, I wondered, is Omori related to the Briefs family? Engineering, the dome that is the destroyed research site, time travel... I just don't know!
Either way though, speculation aside, I really think Jaco is cute and am looking forward to more.
