Fox Movie Rights?

Post by SSJmole » Thu Jul 18, 2013 10:31 am

Hello

With the WB/DC movie "Man of steel" everyone has been saying "The fight scenes were like dbz!" I personally would like a new liveaction movie. Evolution was bad yes but so was Xmen III, Xmen first class however kicked ass. Fox is clever and reboot/make sequels to movies they own rights to in order to keep the rights. Will they be doing a new Dragonball movie anytime soon? If not when do the rights expire so another company can (personally would LOVE Disney to get a hold of it. DBZ + Avengers budget = :D )

I doubt we will see another Dragon Ball live action film anytime soon since DBE only made $57,497,699 worldwide on a 40 million budget which isn't all that great. Also a 200 million budget would be a big risk for a Dragon Ball movie seeing it's so much money and they can lose a lot of money if the movie bombs. Going how poorly DBE did then I don't think we will see another live action film for at least another decade from now.

They're doing the distribution for Battle of Gods, which likely renewed their rights to the franchise.

They might be releasing BOG just to hold on to it a bit longer similar what Sony did with Godzilla 2000 back in 2000. I do not think BOG will help a new live action movie be made anytime soon. At the moment, most studios will look at Dragon Ball based on DBE and will not touch with a ten foot pole. Unlike Superman, I do not think there is not enough people in Hollywood that respects Dragon Ball. I think the Japanese are better off making a Dragon Ball live action film instead. I personally would love to see a DBZ tokusatsu done right in a TV show or movie.

I would've thought to say this, but the BOG English Dub could work by doing a FOX-FUNimation joint venture (ever since News Corp was split off into the new News Corp and 21st Century Fox a few weeks ago) to benefit the costs.

Hollywood respects $$$. If BOG sells a lot and the Dragonball interest by the mainstream is peeked again, They could. I honestly think live action dragonball can work. They just need to do it right.

Man Of Steel was almost similar to DBZ Movie 13 I believe. Where the city is in ruins, and then epic fight between good and evil clashes to see which one emerges the victorious. Zack Snyder or Christopher Nolan directing a live action DBZ movie might turn out good.

DBZ is not the type of thing that Nolan would direct. Zack Snyder is a alright director, but he sucks at story telling. The biggest problem with Man of Steel is that they didn't do a good job on freshing out the characters. Guillermo del Toro would be a better choice in my opinion.

I think a live action film can work, but I don't think BOG is going to renew interest in the franchise. If BOG gets release here in the US, it's not going to be a major release. It's likely going to be shown at cons and film festivals like most foreign movies do.

I can't give my full thoughts until I've seen BOG, but I feel while it's something I'll enjoy, it may not exactly be what a lot of other DB fans in the U.S. would have wanted, and so won't ignite interest with them the way fan-made continuations do.

My ideal creative team for a Dragon Ball Z movie would be Guillermo del Toro and The Wachowski Siblings, assuming Toriyama himself wasn't interested--if he was, that would be awesome as well. I really like Zack Snyder as well, though; seriously, like half of Man of Steel was spent fleshing (note the 'l') out the characters, it just did it in a roundabout way with bizarre pacing (not a complaint, mind you).

As long if they don't turn DBZ into a mindless CG fest like Transformers, Battleship and 2012 then I will be okay. I want a DBZ movie that is good for once. Just don't let Michael Bay touch Dragon Ball.

I still think it should be a Hollywood produced Asian flick. Similarly to how Columbia Pictures did with "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon". Let the Asian director handle this for once!

I think it should just go to FUNimation if it's getting dubbed.

FUNimation was apart of DB Evolution but later backed out.

I think DBE only got made because Fox was most likely going to lose the rights to the franchise if they didn't start filming soon. They got the rights to it in 2002 and didn't start filming until 2007. DBE came out in 2009, I wonder how much longer they will hold on it? Maybe they will let it expire since DBE failed to bring in a profit just like how Sony let their rights to Godzilla die in 2003 seeing that the 1998 Godzilla film didn't do well as they hope for.

In my opinion, Fox cannot be trusted to make a faithful adaptation of DragonBall in live-action format. I mean, hell. Evolution ignored advice and suggestions from Akira Toriyama, fer cryin' out loud.

Fox could try again since their recent reboots like Rise of Planet of the Apes was good. I rather have someone like WB/New Line or Universal make a DBZ movie instead.

You're all blaming FOX like very other "zomg DBE raped my childhood" hater. It's the writers/directors/producers that you should be mad at. Toriyama had input, the writers ignored it. Stephen Chow had input (who was a producer with no input), the director ignored it. There were several scripts for this movie, many of which are even available online. James Wong decided to rewrite a lot himself, he's the director by the way. You should also blame the casting crew for hiring no talent actors. And I wouldn't say the movie was rushed either, it was in development for at least two years. FOX can pick right up where they left off and hire an entirely new cast and crew to try again if they choose too. The actors however are signed onto two more Dragon ball films but I'm not sure when their contracts are up.

I really see no reason to make a live action adaption. For the thirty million dollars Dragonball Evolution was made on Toei Animation could've made a film with better animation than Akira or a Ghibli film.

Fox has been known to get in the way of movies before. Look what happen with Alien 3 for example. Fox really screw up that movie that David Fincher still refuses to do a commentary on the movie. Fox also give Tim Burton a hard time in his remake of Planet of the Apes and Burton still refuses to work with Fox since then.
