That's kind of the thing with acting. You don't try to be like someone else and you make the character your own. It's like, if you saw "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", were you expecting Johnny Depp to be just like Gene Wilder?Duo wrote: To summarize, the main downfall with FUNImation's cast is that they don't try to sound like the original actors most of the time, and end up re-inventing the characters intirely. Toss in the horrible scripting and sub-par music and you get something I refuse to watch nearly all of the time. The only Dub episodes/movies I can watch are ones that I watched many, many times before I discovered the Japanese version.

Agreed. Funimation does a killer job translating and dubbing other anime (like Yu Yu Hakusho, FMA, and Fruits Baskets), but you know, they were just starting out on their own with DBZ and had a lot of learn about anime dubbing.Sebastian (SB) wrote:I feel that FUNimation can do a better job with the voice acting as they did with their other shows. I remember that I thought Ginyu's voice change was bad.
I liked Ginyu's first voice, and then it was all eck.
I think I noticed all the characters voices changed, and the music; Vegeta's theme was quite different from the previous music in the series.

True, some of the voice acting seems pretty bad, sound-wise. But the thing about any of the dubs that usually ends up bothering me is, rather, the illogical choices or changes in dialogue. Per esempio...
{Original (Paraphrasing/According to Viz, anyhoo)}
Goku: So, the being that can destroy entire worlds can't even kill one little man.
{FUNi dub (Paraphrased)}
Goku: You can destroy worlds, but you'll never destroy what I am!
I can see how they might have been trying to make it more dramatic (somehow), but still; that merits a resounding "WTF" for me.
Anyone see what I mean? Or am I just rambling again?

I agree, but, you would think with releasing the "Ultimate Uncut" line up or "GT" for that matter, they would make some effort to please both the "Japanese version" fans by keeping faithful to the script & not make illogical alterations like "SSj Kaboom" mentioned ,keeping & improving upon their original voice actors to keep the dub fans happy. As for the original BGM, I have no hope for that aside from the GT BGM & billingual DVDs. If you think about it up to the point they were done with Cell Saga- End of Z, they already made releases for "Yu Yu Hakusho", & they've done a good job of translating the series. So why not do it for GT?.....Oh wait I forgot, targeting the "young-teen" audience.theoriginalbilis wrote:Agreed. See, Funimation feels the need to appeal to today's youth by inserting techno/rock/rap music into their DBZ/GT dubs. The thing is, there's really no need, people will like a show if it's good, not just because of it's soundtrack.
Remeber when Gundam Wing came out on Toonami? It was VERY faithful to the Japanese in terms of dialogue and the BGM was left completely intact. And it was a hit regardless.
For a more modern example, Naruto is CN's top rated show on Saturdays, and it keeps in the original BGM. Again, no real need to change it.
So, I don't know why Funi felt the need to replace the music on the later DBZ-GT releases. But that's my guess: It's "the hip stuff all of the kids are into!" But I tell you what, it was unnecessary.

I like the Funimation dub better than the ocean dub.The only VA I liked from the ocean dub was Scott McNeil.I think way better job with Piccolo than Chris Sabat.The thing I hated about the Funimation dub and the Ocean dub was the script.They should have never let Chrisophrer Neel and Terry Klassen write the script.They tainted Dbz's script with their horrible writing.They should of just left all the writing to Ward Perry because his writing was the closest to the original Japanese version.
I actually don't remember anything from back then, because I was eleven, and what do you remember when you're an eleven year old with ADD?
Actually, I do remember that I thought all the voices changed (except Freeza's, which I thought sounded the same?), I remember Vegeta's theme (Holy crap!
), and I remember I hated Ginyu's and Krillin's new voices? (I'm not too sure.)
Also, I remember that I thought Freeza was a girl. One of my friends had to tell me Freeza was a guy.

Are you referring to who did Ginyu during season 3, or the Ocean dub who I think was done by the guy who does Megatron?veshira wrote:I remember that I thought Ginyu's voice change was bad.I liked Ginyu's first voice, and then it was all eck.

Yeah, I didn't like Ginyu's new voice.
