Do you feel it's exciting to be able to watch DBZ on TV?
Do you feel it's exciting to be able to watch DBZ on TV?
I just got french satelite, and among those the channel calls D17. It airs 4 DBZ episodes every day. And for some reason, I feel more like watching DBZ when it airs on TV, than go find my dvd in my self and play it from there. It's kinda strange and not logical. But I wonder, do others feel the same?
Re: Do you feel it's exciting to be able to watch DBZ on TV?
I haven't seen DBZ on TV for years, but it would be very exciting, and I imagine it would feel more like "watching DBZ", even if just because that's how I first experienced it.

I think 2005 was when the last time CN played DBZ episodes and I stay up all night to watch the Ultimate Uncut run. I don't feel excited to watch DBZ on TV these days since I seen the show so many times, but I can see why people would due to the nostalgia.

Cartoon Network was airing episodes of DBZ on Toonami up until March, 2008.Hellspawn28 wrote:I think 2005 was when the last time CN played DBZ episodes and I stay up all night to watch the Ultimate Uncut run. Definitely, I find it's the same with other shows too, I always watch the Star Wars films or episodes of Buffy if they're on TV even though I barely watch the DVD's nowadays. I always like to see when the ad-breaks are going to be for some reason.

It's a bit of a bummer that they air four episodes a day, because I won't have time to watch them all. Luckily i know the story by heart, thoughSin wrote:Definitely, I find it's the same with other shows too, I always watch the Star Wars films or episodes of Buffy if they're on TV even though I barely watch the DVD's nowadays. It's probably the feeling that many other people besides you are watching it at the same time. It's a shame TV isn't as connected as the internet and you can't really have any interaction with the other viewers like you can on the web. I only wish stuff like Twitter was around during the early 2000s when DBZ was in it's prime. I would have loved to see people's genuine reactions to stuff back then before anime died down and the fans that remained became jaded.

I remember back then I kind of knew what was coming from what I read online, but there was so much info and so much contradicting info that I just watched it to see what would happen and I genuinely wasn't sure what was going to come. It's like the Pokemon games, you'll probably never feel as much like you are starting out on a journey into the unknown like gamers did when they played Pokemon Red/Blue way back when.

Wow I didn't know CN played episodes that long? I stop watching Toonami around 2006 or 2007 since they played shows that I didn't care for. I did watch DBZ Movie 12 and 13 on CN even though I already saw them long before they were dubbed in English. The only thing I remember CN edited out in Movie 12 was the scenes with Hitler was remove out for obvious reasons.astarisborn94 wrote:Cartoon Network was airing episodes of DBZ on Toonami up until March, 2008.Hellspawn28 wrote:I think 2005 was when the last time CN played DBZ episodes and I stay up all night to watch the Ultimate Uncut run. Re: Do you feel it's exciting to be able to watch DBZ on TV?
I feel this way about a lot of shows, as well. I think, in a small way, it speaks to my lesser qualities, such as laziness. Stumbling onto Kai on a Saturday morning a few months ago was like being given a pleasant surprise, as opposed to:
A) Making the decision if I even want to watch Dragon Ball today,
B) Getting the DVDs out,
C) Switching my TV's video input and turning my DVD on,
D) Taking the DVD out of its box and putting it in for playing.
A lot more "effort" goes into watching a DVD then live TV. For that, you just need to know what time your show comes on. I guess "boob tube" wasn't very far off.
Also, while it's a slightly different discussion, it is a tad thrilling just seeing any anime on TV. Anime in North America in general lives in such a small, digital bubble that anything that might give it a bit more exposure than a Crunchyroll simulcast(talk about preaching to the choir) is a positive to me.

It was exciting back then during the toonami days. But since I have everything on blu-ray, dvd, vhs, digital.. There's zero excitement to watch it on tv now.

Not really. Owning the Dragon Boxes makes watching Dragon Ball Z on TV not that compelling anymore. There's no commercials and you get to listen to the audio track you want.
Even watching Dragon Ball Z Kai on TV a year ago was not that compelling to be honest. I thought it was interesting listening to the new voices and hearing the Japanese OST on American TV, but other than that, it couldn't really hold my attention.

Pretty much exactly what B said. I don't go out of my way to watch Kai/GT/movies on Nicktoons, but if they're on and nothing else I want to see is on, they make great background noise. It's also really nice to know new fans may be getting exposed to it too.

This. TV was a lot more exciting and attention-drawing before home video and the internet basically made it null. Plus, I can archive binge.Jackal puFF wrote:It was exciting back then during the toonami days. But since I have everything on blu-ray, dvd, vhs, digital.. The last time DBZ played on Cartoon Network here was 2010/2011 and that was the Ocean Dub for 1-53 and FUNi dub for 54-276. Still wish I recorded the FUNi dub now just for all the recaps and NEPs as well as the normal length version of Ginyu Assault.

I got rid of my cable months ago. Life has never been sweeter.
But really, the only way I watch anything anymore is through internet streaming or through DVD/Blu-Ray. My busy schedule doesn't allow me to sit down and watch TV much anymore. But when I do want to watch DB/DBZ, those are the methods I choose to go about it.

Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

I still love watching it on TV. I watch Kai on Kix all the time. Something about it just feels more right than watching it on DVD. It isn't quite as exciting as the Cartoon Network/CNX/Toonami days because I always know what's going to happen by now and I preferred watching it with the Shuki Levy and Bruce Faulconer music as opposed to Kikuchi but it still gives me a really good feeling tuning into it every day and I do like the Kai dub a lot.

I think the nostalgia for having the shows on TV is the reason why people like watching them on TV. That's why people wanted the 90's Nick shows Doug, CatDog, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life and Rocket Power back on TV because they miss watching them on TV. With DVD's I have the shows uncut and no stupid ads. I'm hoping Funi will put Dragon Ball on Netflix soon.

I actually enjoy having ads as long as they're about shows I actually watch. A lot of the promos for Z, GT, DB and Kai over the years have been epic and they give a more unique experience that can only be had while watching on TV. And the vote-a-saga thing Toonami used to do back in the day was epic and really added an extra excitement to watching DBZ all day on TV.Hellspawn28 wrote:I think the nostalgia for having the shows on TV is the reason why people like watching them on TV. Also, not all of those series are on dvd or it took a while to do so.Hellspawn28 wrote:I think the nostalgia for having the shows on TV is the reason why people like watching them on TV.
