Re: Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ: "Rock the Dragon"
I do think they could have tried harder with this set especially when it comes to throwing in old TV promos or an interview or two as extras. The book is nice and all but it lacks any real substance and it is kind of obnoxious on your shelf. So far I am enjoying the set though and personally I'm not bothered by the video quality.

Seems like something that looks better in motion, at least that's what I'm seeing on youtube...though it's people recording off the screen. After playing with the contrast of the screen shots it looks like it's in between Madman and Pioneer in terms of quality.NitroEX wrote:I do think they could have tried harder with this set especially when it comes to throwing in old TV promos or an interview or two as extras. I'd like to get this as VHS has a lower shelf life + the first 2 episodes +NEP/title cards.
Didn't Funimation try to get the Toonami promos but there was copyright problems. To be honest though, I don't expect much in terms of extras from FUNimation

Re: Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ: "Rock the Dragon"
I was hoping Tanooki's screenshots would show that the footage wasn't actually out of focus, but it definitely is. I love the colors, but that focus issue hurts my eyes. It makes me instinctively try to focus my eyes, and looks like I'm seeing double slightly. Also, it doesn't look like "VHS" as someone stated earlier, and I doubt the flaw was intentional. Packaging is also poor.
Not a big deal. Considering the footage was botched, the only incentive I'd have for this would be the TV dub of movie 3, but I find the uncut Ocean cast dub of it as adequately nostalgic. Not going to spend over $50 for that one movie, and even still, I don't know that I'd want to watch it out of focus.
Soon I'll buy the last few singles and be done with Ocean cast dub purchases.

Does the set have the next episode preview at the end of episode 53

Re: Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ: "Rock the Dragon"
I remember someone mentioning something along those lines in this thread, and if my understanding about it is right FUNi originally wanted to include old 1996-toonami DBZ promos and stuff like that as extras but couldn't because the copyrights for those materials are owned by different people and in FUNi's eyes it would have been too much of a hassle and headache to get permission to use them.eledoremassis02 wrote:Didn't Funimation try to get the Toonami promos but there was copyright problems. If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out.

If someone were to put up just Disc 9 for the three movies, I would probably buy it.
Re: Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ: "Rock the Dragon"
There's a boxset on Amazon with the three Pioneer dubs. I might honestly spring for a used copy.
(My biggest reluctance is wondering how awkward it'd look on my DBZ shelf already owning the FUNi releases.

Yea, it does. This is one of the first things I checked cause I was curious about it myself.ABED wrote:Does the set have the next episode preview at the end of episode 53

I have a question for those who bought this that I haven't seen brought up, as I've only seen talk about edits, previews and video. Do you like the cast's performances on this, or do you prefer them on Beast Wars, Gundam, X-Men: Evo, My Little Pony, etc?

Re: Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ: "Rock the Dragon"
So I looked at the relationship chart in the booklet and it's really weird when you look at it closely.
For one thing we have some original character names instead of dub ones ex: Lunch instead of Launch, Urunai Baba instead of Fortune Teller Baba and Gyumao instead of Ox King.
I find it funny that Lunch was included in the booklet at all since she wasn't in any of the Ocean Dub episodes.
Also a lot of the art is terribly compressed. Very low res, jaggy and very unprofessional looking. I'm pretty sure I could do I better job in photoshop.

I wondered if they tried to simply copy the concept of the relationship chart from the Dragon Books, and forgot to change some of the names back to the dub version.YamiAtomsk wrote:So I looked at the relationship chart in the booklet and it's really weird when you look at it closely.

Wow, I didn't even notice, didn't bother looking at it. Interesting.

Maybe they were just copying and pasting assets and naming schemes from the Dragon Box releases?

It's been like fifteen years since I've even seen the episode's original dub but doesn't Bulma look at a picture of the group in one episode and actually says "Lunch" properly?

Re: Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ: "Rock the Dragon"
She makes no mention of Lunch. She does say the name "Tien Shinhan," which had never been used for that character in the dub before, so maybe that's what you're thinking of.
In fact, the image of her is so non-sequitur and un-commented on by the dub (I remember it confusing me as to who that mystery lady is when I first got into the series) that I remember at one point, DaizenshuuEX released a video on YouTube, spoofing the censorship policies back then by replacing her with a picture of a smiling Piccolo. Wish that was still around.

Do you follow the most comprehensive and entertaining Dragon Ball analysis series on YouTube? If you do, you're smart and awesome and fairly attractive. If not, see what all the fuss is about without even having to leave Kanzenshuu:

I got it a few years ago on ebay.
Back on topic, I did notice that the video on this is heavily interlaced, like badly interlaced. I hope it's just VLC player, though I feel like it isn't :/

For those who have the set already, do you recommend it this set?
I have the Pioneer VHS' already and been flipping about getting this set or not. If I could get the Madman DVD i'd get those..but those are so hard to get.

Re: Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ: "Rock the Dragon"
For what it's worth I would recommend getting it, sure it's not perfect but there are some things that make this set worth buying even if they're small things for some people, for one thing this is the first official home release of the Saban era dub that actually contains the original uncut lines for the first 3-4 episodes (I'm still surprised FUNi didn't include a 2nd audio track containing the revised lines for those episodes), this release is the first U.S. DVD release of the Saban era dub that contains the original 1996 broadcast NEP's and episode recaps as well as all 53 episode titlecards, also this set contains the edited dub for Tree of Might which like the original uncut lines for the first 3-4 episodes has never had an official home release till this set came along so there's some things that make this set worth buying, but the choice is yours alone.eledoremassis02 wrote:For those who have the set already, do you recommend it this set?

Some good points. The main problem for me is the interlace issue. But, I'm not sure how noticeable it is on a TV. Overall it doesn't look bad at all. I hope amazon drops the price a bit soon..

Re: Listing for "Ocean Dub"-specific DBZ: "Rock the Dragon"
Doesn't look bad at all indeed. It's a step above what the same episodes might look like watching on youtube. Watching it for the audio anyway.
The book is kinda useless though. The intro talks about how the Ocean team voices helped make DBZ popular but they don't mention any VA names. In the character profiles they could have said "voiced by suchandsuch, episode #'s yadayada to thatone...."
Ah well.
