If they were done to expand the franchise as you said, and if the definition I provided reads "something added to augment weight or size or fill space", how exactly doesn't it agree with the definition? "Augment size" is pretty much the same thing as saying "expand something", unless you really want to be nitpicky about the words. That panel exists in the manga, so its clear that the author is telling us that at least that scene from the movie, or a version of it, really happened.
